There's nothing I find quite as infuriating as someone telling me how I feel and think of certain issues because I'm a white, heterosexual male. Or telling me that somehow I don't have the depth or empathy to understand certain racial issues, simply because of my privilege of being white.

It's hypocritical and disparaging.

I will go to this talk because I desperately want my preconceived notion of it to be proven wrong.

I always thought that Georgia Tech was the most egalitarian college in the south. Everyone here gets shafted just the same.

When you have 3 tests, a lab report, etc., in a week, you don't really give a fuck about anything but making it through the week.

As a minority, this kind of stuff confuses me. Why do we have to make this a thing? Calling this white privilege is way different then having a talk about "difficulties minorities face" or "how to address race issues", because we aren't pointing fingers or shaming anyone. I expect better from the diversity center.

Strange how race/sex issues have been coming up on this subreddit lately. Maybe people read this submission and realized they need to step up their game.

Can we have an event about how I was beat up, robbed and threatened at my 85% black high school? Or would that just be too awkward?

shhhhhhhhh black people can't be racist shhhhhh

That happened because your privilege made them uncomfortable so they acted in self-defense.

The scary part is that this sounds like an actual argument someone would make. Not a smart someone, but someone.

I was 100% certain that this was a joke when I first saw it 2 days ago.

...I would have gone to one of the "prestigious" libart colleges i got accepted to if I wanted to deal with this BS. wtf is happening to GT?

I heard God Emperor Obama personally requested this event be created when he visited last year. Secret service was pinging white privilege off the charts.

Also as a reminder, they will be checking privilege at the door. Anything above 3 microPrivs will not be allowed in. Be sure to take your court mandated estrogen suppositories before attending this event.

First the fight song shit and now this? Fucking hell, we need to bring drownproofing back, knock these people from their PC moral high ground into the pool. If you aren't aware what that is, look it up. We used to straight up tie students' wrists and legs together and throw them in the pool. Those were the glory days of tech. This existed through most of the 80s.

Now we can't say "cheer" in our fight song (you know, the one sung at events where one is inclined to cheer) or be white without being forced into feeling guilty about it. GT - if you don't want to see the alumni money well dry up stop backing stupid shit like this.

We should bring drownproofing back? Are you saying that because black students are less likely to be able to swim than white students which will cause lower attendance of african american students and ultimately lead to the perpetuation of the white male dominated upper class in America?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! RACIST!!!!! I hope you sleep well at night, Hitler.

But really, I wish they would bring drownproofing back. It helped weed out the weak.

Now we can't say "cheer" in our fight song

Can you elaborate?

There was a recent petition to change "to cheer the brave and bold" to "to join the brave and bold"

Wait, what??? What's wrong with the word cheer nowadays?

Apparently it's considered patronizing to the women in the same verse.

Fuck this. I hope FIRE goes after Tech for pushing this nonsense.

Tech isn't really violating anybody's rights by supporting this. Tech isn't silencing anybody. So I doubt FIRE would care.

It's a package deal. SJWs don't ever limit themselves to just spouting their bullshit, they also try to silence everyone who disagrees with them.

I would be absolutely shocked if Tech doesn't start trying to punish people who stand up to this garbage.

At this point I'm pulling my donations. Between the fight song and this, it's very obvious the Tech administration has fully drunk the kool-aid on this crap.

Nods respectfully towards you.

they also try to silence everyone who disagrees with them

This is correct. Their entryism always starts small and innocent. They hold a seminar or two, wonder aloud why anyone wouldn't like them, etc. Then, in a little while, you get codes of conduct, speech rules, safe spaces, and other silencing/shaming tactics against anyone who doesn't view the world through their particular lens.

The subtitle of this talk is "An opportunity to discuss what makes talking about race so difficult for White people". Maybe it's so difficult to talk about because the type of people running offices of diversity have conditioned white people to feel guilty, and minorities to feel offended when the topic of race is brought up by white people? This Simpsons clip seems like a great metaphor for what I see when an institution that sustains itself on discord between groups of people asking the majority race why they feel uncomfortable talking about race.

Now, you could argue that if people find this offensive, then they should just ignore it and not attend. However, this isn't some student group bringing a controversial speaker in, this is a division of GT that employs people, with the help of tuition money and alumni donations. As a fairly well-off alum, I wouldn't want any of my money supporting this kind of nonsense. The next donation solicitation is going right in the trash.

Better than all the fliers a couple years ago inviting us to come learn what Jesus would have thought about Nanotechnology.

inb4 race baiting from sjw that frequents this sub

Single Jewish woman? This is r/gatech not r/Emory should I feel white guilt because I made that joke? Or is it white privilege that allows me to? This seminar is going to do so much good at explaining how bad we should all feel about not feeling bad.

I'm really surprised at the negative reaction to this. Maybe it's just because I'm a scary liberal SJW beta cuck PC police SRS user, but I'm pretty much like 100% sure that the existence of white privilege is not at all doubted among sociologists. You would think with the reputation Tech students have for being logical, curious, and open-minded, that they wouldn't be so opposed to a talk that may go against their current worldview.

Saying "its hard to see racism when you're white" is a pretty ridiculous statement.

Is anybody else able to make a wall post on the facebook event? Did they turn off wall posts? I need to know if I'm just being retarded or if the diversity council are literally free-speech hating fascists.

I mean, there's a pretty big post there right now.
