dont know why it looks so shit if it was built in 1815 tbh
Apart from a couple Spanish missions and 18th/19th century star-forts, the closest we have – at least aesthetically – might be this.Built out of quarried granite by an essentially non-industrial society, it's closer in spirit to medieval castles than the other chateau-dress-up "castles" we have. In fact, along with the Disney castle, it's one of the reasons Americans picture castles as giant stone chateaus.

>>48961094The Rock of Cashel, the great fortress-monastery. One of the only castles in Ireland built before the arrival of the Normans.
So, does the government own the majority of the castles in your country? Or are they inherited? Can you even sell or buy a castle?
>>48961073
>>48961367
>>48961287Most of the kings property were given to the government, they still live there and use it of course. You can own castles.
>>48961502
>>48961711Ok no more
>>48961287There are too much castles. Alot of them are in private use. They finance themself with tourists. But there are restriction, due to cultural heritage. And yes, you can buy them. Sometimes they are really cheap, but you have to pay the upkeep and renovations.
>tfw all american castles are tacky
This place is pretty cool, the road to it is pretty crazy
Maisie
>>48962034This is the beginning, made entirely out of stone all the way up to mountain the castle is on. 1.3 km long, 6 meters highApparently we got a saying from this place, "was the lord not crazy, the poor would have no bread".
Castle pretty close to where I am.
>>48962156We have two different words in German.Burg - means castle for defence purposeSchloss - means castle as residence for rich fagsCities with the name *burg usually had a castle.
posting a palace instead, fuck the rulez
>>48962283>>48962075Does burgh mean anything in old english?
>>48962283well there are hardly any buildings which could be labeled "burg" in Canada other than some Forts, but they are not really castles even if they are quite large.
>>48962371borough/burgh i think
>>48962371it means town often in Englishat leas its not uncommon for people to refer to some place as a "burg" even if it isn't names as such.
>>48962371>A burgh /ˈbʌrə/ was an autonomous corporate entity in Scotland and Northern England, usually a town, or toun in Scots. This type of administrative division existed from the 12th century, when King David I created the first royal burghs. Burgh status was broadly analogous to borough status, found in the rest of the United Kingdom. Following local government reorganisation in 1975 the title of "royal burgh" remains in use in many towns, but now has little more than ceremonial value.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgh
>>48962433no borough is different, more a section of a city, like a "town" within a larger metropolis. think like Queens in New York
>tfw no castlesWe almost built a cathedral once in the 1300's, but the taxation to build it pissed off the islanders so they had to stop. The Shetlanders got us beat with their stone buildings.
>>48962553>but the taxation to build it pissed off the islandersThats pretty based tbh
>>48953771moors castle. In SintraYes, we removed kebab here. Hence, its name.
>>48962341no mountains in netherlandsPena Palace
>>48962797According to folk legend the taxation caused a civil war with the anti-taxation southern islanders fighting on one side, and the pro-church northerners on the side of the bishop. The pro-tax people lost, and so the bishop took refuge in the church knowing the christianized islanders would be afraid to anger God by entering. So instead they called upon the last remaining unchristianized heathen to chase the bishop down and kill him.
From my hometown.
>>48963664>go there>join some random tour with a few people I know>guide tells us how the guards got drunk all day in winter and pissed off of the sides of the castle
