I do that too ! And if i see a discussion going on, i get a smug sense of satisfaction downvoting all the sexists, and opvoting all the sensible people.

It's horribly childish, and very much against rediquette, but my blood pressure can't handle getting into arguments with these idiots.

I mean to be fair, you know there are a bunch of people on the other side upvoting sexism and downvoting dissent so you're just trying to even shit out, maybe.

For your blood pressure's sake, do not engage.

Most of the time is futile anyway.

As a lurker I feel like maybe it wouldn't be so futile if we all actively engaged in these things, but I do understand what you mean. The amount of frustration I get when browsing /r/all is crazy.

I've tried actively engaging. It typically results in a dogpile of bad logic, faulty reasoning, and a distinct lack of empathy. Nothing gets achieved.

Oh yeah totally. It's impossible to debate anything if the opposite isn't even trying to understand your point of view, and we shouldn't have to constantly waste our energy and mental wellbeing just trying to tell redditors women are people too. I guess I wanted to be optimistic about this for a change. I appreciate a lot that you have tried to make a change here in reddit, it's not easy at all!

We all do our best, when and where we can.

[–]thinkpadiusXY Feminist Game Developer - Heroes of the Antarctic

I usually don't engage for the purpose of convincing the person I'm talking to, but the silent person who's reading. So I try and be stylish and cordial until the other guy explodes in rage, revealing that at the bottom of all his "evidence" is just anger, misogyny, and selfishness.

I engage not because I think I can convince the person I talk to, but in the hopes that I can convince people reading the thread. If I stop engaging, I might as well have given up my hope that people can see reason.

I try to do that too. Sometimes it works. Mostly not though. :(

Funny how downvoting horrible people is against "Rediquette" but being one isn't.

[–]eifoskatA viking minus the beard

I mean, in theory there should be room for sane discussion. And downvoting effectively silences people, which is sometimes a good thing, but it creates a bit of an echo chamber,

sane

/r/all

Pick one. =(

The problem is, it's all a matter of perspective, to them, you are horrible people.

From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!

[–]thinkpadiusXY Feminist Game Developer - Heroes of the Antarctic

Yeah, how dare you take away men's rights by asking for equal pay etc etc. Lol

No, there's certainly no pay gap! It's all about different levels of experience and time in a job and types of job!

What a load of malarky.

I (a dude) was working at Ikea for, maybe 4 months. I was eating lunch with a female coworker and come to find out I was making $.50 more than her. She had been there for over a year and worked in Kitchens helping people pick out their cabinets/etc for full redesigns. I worked in textiles, sometimes I would cut yards of fabric people. Doesn't make any sense that I was making more money than her.

but muh free speech

I think the point is that you what you consider 'horrible' will be very different to what someone else will consider 'horrible'. So the reasonable thing to do it to reply with an argument, instead of just downvoting, which nobody benefits from.

I do that and get downvoted myself. At least it tends not to be beow -80 most of the time.

together we all make a difference!

Sometimes I'll spend ages writing out a really well thought out and intelligent response, look at it again, then just decide it's not worth it and press "cancel". Downvoting is just easier than engaging.

There was a thread on the front page yesterday(I think?) and it was about false rape accusations or something along those lines. Made the biggest mistake of clicking "comments". That's what causes strokes. Lots of "women have it easy!" and "I'd rather get cat called rather than accused of rape" type of comments and worse.

Plus side, it completely cured my low blood pressure.

/r/adviceanimals should be a standard first line prescription for anyone with hypotension.

[–]O_tsutsugamushirule-breaking moth 20

Unsubscribing was the best thing to happen to my reddit experience.

[–]readanddreamof the soft look

It's insane even to start this way of thinking but...yep, a guy in a million(maybe) get falsely accused of rape and every woman gets catcalled (and more) hundreds of times in her life. Nice...

[–]F_S_RocksChocolate and Coffee are my crack and cocaine 5

Well at least one good thing came out of that experience. Good luck with your blood pressure!

False rape accusations are the most overblown bs on this site, imo.

Oh my god, yes. It's like... yeah, they happen. Of course they do. People lie about all sorts of things, and lies like that can ruin a person's life. I don't think a single person has disputed that.

However, the bigger issue is that so many actual rapes go unreported and that the process of getting rapists prosecuted is so drawn-out and traumatic for the victim.

And every single time there's reports of rapes, a bunch of people jump to the conclusion that she must be lying! It's frustrating to read that shit..

Related for sure. Boy who cried wolf. The liars jeopardize believing the real.

[–]when-nothing-is-surewhere are my pajamas?

Yup, downvoting all the posts where it's all about a girl. Naked preferrably. So many porn subreddits and they still need to post to normal places.

I agree, there are so many other appropriate subreddits for that stuff and yet I see it all the time in the default subs. And then all the comments have to be like "hurr durr I'm a guy and I love boobs"

[–]emshlafI'm pretty but tough like a diamond, or beef jerky in a ballgown

Stuff like this is exactly why I unsubbed from a lot of the default subs. Half the content was just "omg boobz!!!" and it got old seeing it on my front page.

[–]StarInkynesspepe silvia 13

There was a gif on the front page of /r/gifs yesterday. It was a curvy girl doing AMAZING hula hoop tricks and a bunch of the comments were just gifs of fit girls in the underwear spinning with the hoop all lazy-like with comments saying that's the "right" way to hoop. Made me so peeved.

[–]sarcasmdetectorbrokeHow did you all get in my bedroom?

Oh that post was an absolute mess! I'm not sure why I went into the comments. Though I have to admit it was refreshing to see one person comment about how if she was skinnier she wouldn't have been able to do some of those moves.

And racist. And homophobic. And trans-phobic. And all the other people attacking vulnerable groups (I'm looking at you fat people hate).

[–]emshlafI'm pretty but tough like a diamond, or beef jerky in a ballgown

Oh god, the response to the banning of fat people hate was fucking disgusting. SO many people bitching and whining in big subreddits, with a surprising amount of people agreeing with them. How fucking insecure do you have to be that banning such a needlessly cruel subreddit actually upsets you?

[–]kemistreekatTROLL IN THE DUNGEONS, just thought you outta know..

[–]Cymoril_MelniboneMSPAINT GOD 23ポイント24ポイント  (4子コメント)

Subs I have unsubbed from because of tits and ass:

  • /r/Art because fucking naked women constantly. Naked men? Hahaha, no, hardly ever.
  • /r/pics because sexism, homophobia, transphobia, naked women. Naked men? Of course not.
  • /r/oldschoolcool because every other post was porn or pinups. Apparently that's 'cool'. Instead of tits and ass, how about, oh I dunno, Sojourner Truth or Rosa Parks?

Fuck, I'm even getting sick of /r/writingprompts because it's just stories about men, hitler, men, robots, men, men and time travelling men.

Been seeing more of them recently

Yes and no! Also call it out in the comments! You'll eat downvotes, but staying quiet is the the same as supporting it. A downvote is an excellent first step, mind you
