Wow, a national anthem translated to another language can sound insanely off lol. I'm Mexican, and to me, just reading this in English takes all the passion and flavour away from it. No offense or anything to the english language.

This is a very beautiful and meaningful proverb to a lot of us Mexican born citizens. As an immigrant that escaped unbelievable violence and escaped mexico the night I was supposed to be abducted by cartel to be used as a sex slave at the age of 5, It makes me so sad that its being used as a joke about the wall or the border issues and immigration all together.

it actually symbolizes hope and strength to many of us that have survived violence ans war in mexico. It also refers to the death of the 43 students in Ayotzinapa Guerrero (which is where i'm from ) They were university students that wanted to educate and fight against organized crime and corrupt government crime in Mexico. They were abducted and killed by the Mexican government as a way to scare anyone wanting to start a revolution. We have not gotten any answers for the mass killings by the government and cartel. They think that by killing us and burying our bodies, the truth wont erupt and we will keep suffering in silence. but you see it only makes us want to fight harder and we wont stay in silence any longer.

why is this so powerful?

The students were killed and buried in mass graves. They thought that by burying the innocent people they kill they could silence them and silence an entire country.

but that's the thing, it only made the country demand answers and raise hell. Its citizens demanded answers, demanded the separation of cartel and government joint efforts. Ayotzinapa and other places ran off the corrupt police officers in their towns and replaced them with their own armed citizens to protect their children and neighbors. yes they thought they could bury them. However they didn't realize that in doing so it would sprout a revolution.

I was able to escape certain death and seeing my country be torn apart by violence brings me so much pain. Can we not make this into a political war and instead just respect the death of millions of innocent people only wanting to create change in a country that they cannot escape from? A country where most youth and citizens know they will most likely end up in a dug up grave somewhere all because they spoke out against injustice.

    It is Mexican. Was coined by the Zapatistas (comandante Marcos) many years ago. And now it's a proverb used to remember the 43 students killed in southern Mexico.

    They are not disappeared, they are dead. "Disappeared students" is now more an urban legend that people keep telling. One major told to the police to calm down some rebel students(they wanted to disturb major's wife event), the police then forwarded the students to the narco so they could "just" teach them a lesson.

    major and police were not thinking the narco would kill all of them. I'm a Mexican, plus I read and investigate, sadly most Mexicans just spread false but popular things.
