"We came from Caladan—a paradise world for our form of life. There existed no need on Caladan to build a physical paradise or a paradise of the mind — we could see the actuality all around us. And the price we paid was the price men have always paid for achieving a paradise in this life — we went soft, we lost our edge."

I will not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

People always list this as such a great quote, but it didn't have nearly the dramatic impact on me as Duke Leto Atreides' words to Paul.

"I'll miss the sea, but a person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing him to grow. Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken."

There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man - with human flesh.

I've been giving this some thought this year.

We watched Inside Out the other day, and I was disappointed in the dinner table scene when they go into the father's head. They had a chance to show the father consumed with worries about his work, wanting to provide for the family, his own internal struggles and problems.

But no, they decided to go the typical herp derp dumb father is stupid and sports-obsessed and not paying attention hurr hurr.

I think they missed a chance to plant the seed in the minds of kids that their parents are also human, with their own hopes and fears and demons.

I would argue that childhood ends when the child realizes his parents are ... people.

I actually cringed when I saw that scene. It almost ruined the entire movie. It was cliched in the worst way and it did not fit into the narrative at all. I absolutely hate when men are painted as idiot husbands, who can't take care of their families.

It's beyond insulting.

It's written as a litany, which is meant to be memorized I think. Regardless of impact I'm not surprised it stuck with more people. It's also repeated a lot more often.

Goddamn that's a good book, I gotta re-read it

What book is this from?

Dune. Go read it now.

If youre not into reading, go find it on audible.com its very well done. Search for code words an youll get a free month, try JRE

[–]my_fokin_percocets 24ポイント25ポイント  (41子コメント)

What is generally thought of the sequels? Dune is hard to get in to but very rewarding. I found Dune Messiah even harder to read and ended up putting it down. Should I keep going?

I read Dune a few years ago and went right to Messiah right after. Didn't get very far.

I reread the first book a few months ago specifically to give the entire series a shot and ended up doing about a book a week. I still wasn't a huge fan of Messiah (but I think a reread of the series might change that) but it was worth it for the rest of the series. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but I seriously recommend giving the whole series a shot before you give up before the end.

I thought Children and especially God Emperor were so good that when I think back to the original, I catch myself saying "Oh yeah, and that stuff happened too, didn't it?"

The sequels written by Frank himself are great. I've never read his son's sequels but I've read his prequels. Maybe skip those. They were okay, but they weren't "Holy shit Dune is awesome" Dune.

Also, I found the Scott Brick audiobooks and would recommend them.

Theres also a movie.

Don't watch that.

Lol...I loved that movie. Didn't ruin the book for me weirdly.

Also, the SciFi channel did a new version of Dune..more theatrical. I think Susan Sarandon was in it? More true to the book. Not too bad.

yeah and james mcavoy was leto II, i did enjoy it, and i got a huge crush on the alia actress at the time :3

I like the original version, but I grew up with it. The newer version made more sense but I liked it less. Sting was better as Fade and Alia was more creepy. I tried showing it to my boyfriend. I ended up having to explain a lot of it.

A sick RTS came out of those novels.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_PM_PHOTOS 117ポイント118ポイント  (26子コメント)

You could argue that the RTS genre itself came out of these novels, as Dune II has been credited with creating the format for RTS games that flowed.

Edit: Lol. Followed. I didn't mean to say "flowed" but it's staying.

The first real RTS. RIP Westwood.

That's ridiculous. My homeworld is Calderaan.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_PM_PHOTOS 91ポイント92ポイント  (52子コメント)

That's funny, but there really are a number of direct parallels between Dune (1965) and Star Wars (1977). Spoilers follow.

Dune: Chosen one saves the galaxy with supernatural powers a generation early by going to a desert planet with two moons.

Star wars: Chosen one saves the galaxy with supernatural powers a generation late by leaving a desert planet with two suns.

Dune: A corrupt galactic empire conspires to (re?)gain absolute power but underestimates the noble underdogs who are aided by the supernatural good.

Star Wars: A corrupt galactic empire conspires to maintain absolute power but underestimates the noble underdogs who are aided by the supernatural good.

Dune: The death of the hero's father is a motivating factor in defeating the galactic empire and establishing order in the galaxy

Star Wars: The death of the hero's father is a motivating factor in defeating the galactic empire and bringing balance to the force

(ahem Hamlet)

Dune: The hero's sister (born fairly late in the plot) was a critical part of the struggle against the galactic empire independent of the hero's efforts.

Star Wars: The hero's sister (revealed as sister fairly late in the trilogy's plot) was a critical part of the struggle against the galactic empire independent of the hero's efforts.

There are a number of other similarities, but these are what I thought of off the top of my head. I could say though that Star Wars was the best Dune movie I could have asked for.

Dune: There are spaceships.

Star Wars: There are spaceships.

Except Dune spaceships are huge and have smaller spaceships in them, and are powered by crazy drugged up mutants that warp space with their mines. I bet a Guild Heighliner can do the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs.

You'll find a lot of those parallels if you look around for them. Hero's Journey fare.

Would this be edited (very much) or is this really what here eyes would look like irl?

Even with the large assumption that it isn't edited to make the eyes "punchier" the vast majority of her eye is actually being colored by the reflection of the water around her. If you ran into her on the street she would have light eyes but it would not look like this.

Quite heavily edited. If you zoom in you'll notice her forehead and lips have odd magenta streaks, and her brown cheek is made opalescent like her eyes, even though the shadow is falling on that side. Some of the water drops on her skin also have the opalescent effect applied to them.

Most people in the Maldives have dark, brown eyes and you can see that they've splotched the opalescent coloring into both her pupil and past the limbal ring, which would not have color in it.

It's a fun picture at a glance, but the mistakes add up as you keep looking at it.

Those green/magenta streaks are most likely caused by chromatic aberration in the camera lens. https://photographylife.com/what-is-chromatic-aberration

The photo may be edited, but I doubt to the extent of changing eye colour.

And the cheek is "opalescent" i.e fucking blue because it's reflecting the blue water.

Yep, this is pretty classic green/magenta CA due to the lens being shot wide open or close to it.

past the limbal ring, which would not have color in it.

Not true at all - my very dark brown eyes have colour that leaks out and into the white in one spot.

The magenta on her forehead and lips, and the green on her neck, is chromatic aberration from a fast lens, wide open.

I believe that her eyes are roughly that colour - likely 'boosted' slightly in post (as with the colour of the sky and sea), but not entirely faked.

Edit: I also cannot see any obvious local editing on the eyes (e.g. pasting in eyes from somewhere else, or drawing them on):

[–]Veltoric 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't think it's edited much, in the sense that it is still 95% the original image. Maybe some saturation adjustment but it would take color correcting, adding an image of the sclera veins/iris from someone elses eyes, with a filter high pass in photoshop, still wouldn't provide these results. I work for a big VFX company I don't see any abnormalities except for the chromatic aberration which is natural in a camera to an extent. The pupils stood out to me at first but they are totally possible with that much light and reflected/bounce light.

Clearly she's controlling the water around her.

what is interesting to me is that i probably could not pair those two faces up i wasn't told they were the same person. in general, the woman's face is very weathered and tense. you can see the furrowing of the eyebrows and tension in the upper lip. maybe that tension is why her nose looks different. her child face is so open while her adult face looks very closed off.

She was 12 in the first picture and 30 in the second. She was married soon after the first picture was taken. Considering she was a refugee for a good chunk of the '80s, I'm not surprised that she looks a little weathered.

I actually met the photographer who took that shot, Steve McCurry, in Gardez Afghanistan in 2003. He actually came up to me and started asking me questions, chatting etc. Nice guy. I had no idea who he was and only found out a few hours later. I was so mad that I didn't seize the opportunity to pick his brain at the time. He's an amazing photographer.

This is my great(times?) grandpa. He and his son had light blue almost white eyes and it's not a problem with the picture. He, his son, and their gang were known counterfeiters and hell raisers. Many people were intimidated by him and his son for their eye, saying they could see right through your soul. He knew this and he was know to stare at people across the bar for uncomfortable amounts of time, just to fuck with them. That and their reputation for causing trouble led them to kind of run the area. Here are some news clips I could find online one two. I have a new article about their final arrest and the gun fight but it's burried in a one of my totes of family memorabilia, so it's unlikely I'll get around to finding it soon.

Edit: spelling.

something about pale eyes i find very untrustworthy...

That's got something to do with how your mind subconsciously reads eyes. Bigger pupils go along with relaxation which is typically absent in a person being deceitful. Lighter eyes have the appearance of smaller pupils and so they look more on edge, giving the impression that they're untrustworthy or boring into you (like the "staring into my soul" guy noted).

On the other side of that, darker eyes are generally seen as more trustworthy.

Damn, always wondered that. When I was a kid I always heard about green/blue eyes supposed to be much more beautiful, while the first feeling I got from them was always uneasiness/defiance.

I find it disarming. Like I could never lie, but there's no reason to since they can already stare into my soul.

A quick reverse image search tells me that it's an Afghan girl and her son. Child brides are not an uncommon thing in that part of the world unfortunately. :(

And it looks like she might be carrying another child. Either that or its a weird angle.

I'm guessing a large part of that is the crystal blue waters that are reflecting in them

I'm guessing a large part of it is post processing. I never realized every photo showcased by photographers is photoshopped until I tried photoshop, camera raw, and light room. You can literally click and drag a circle around her face and change blues to aquas in 10 seconds. It's really amazing for making photos look like you saw them, but can easily be used to make them look like whatever you want. Maybe that's how her eyes really look, but I'd bet this wasn't copied directly from camera to Internet.

That was also my guess but some part of me wanted to believe

I don't disbelieve...I just don't know. And I've never seen eyes like that without colored contacts, so I lean towards being skeptical. Maybe tho...it's a big world.

Most atolls of the Maldives consist of a large, ring-shaped coral reef supporting numerous small islands. Islands average only one to two square kilometers in area, and lie between one and 1.5 meters above mean sea level.

It's probably not far from the truth.
