I thought this was shockingly sympathetic compared to the usual stuff about this kind of thing that you see from the mainstream press that usually reminds me of that scott alexander 'radicalising the romanceless' piece.

I can see why she had to shoehorn a (somewhat diverse from my understanding) group of people into a category of 'incels', for the purposes of an article explaining a marginal group of internet communities and psudo communities, but it was still a bit clunky to lump those places/groups/etc all together. I haven't been to all of them but some seem quite different from others.

Many of FA’s members, the group’s moderator believes, suffer from severe depression; he can recall three forum members who have attempted suicide. Both Gilmartin and the Georgia State researchers suggest that involuntary celibacy is part of a self-sustaining package of psychological issues: depression, neuroticism, anxiety, autistic disorders.

Mental health gets brought up a lot in the article, particularly depression and anxiety. Helping them to get access to proper care would likely be a step in the right direction, although the stigma around mental health (particularly for men) would make that difficult.

I'd like to think that we're taking a step in the right direction when it comes to addressing mental health issues in men, particularly in Western countries. It's still stigmatised, don't get me wrong, but nowhere near as bad as it once was. More and more people are becoming accepting of the fact that men have actual feelings and emotions.

I am curious, having read this, what the equivalent proportion of female incels are. Any stats to hand on this? This isn't to whatabout in any way, I'm just curious how things compare between the genders.

This seems to be one of those issues where the guys are going to get it from all sides. Traditionally male virginity is something to lose, but they also are isolationist and belong to oft-misunderstood online cultures (4chan and reddit to an extent). They also challenge female choices in dating, which usually leads to them being derided as "entitled" by many feminists.

And I've seen no shortage of virgin shaming and mockery about lack of sexual appeal coming from that last group either.
