When buying a refrigerator, remember that it's the only major appliance that works 24/7/365. Also, it holds hundreds of dollars worth of food, (or in my case, condiments and beer). Spend wisely.

It doesn't work 24/7. It cuts off when it doesn't need to cool and powers back up again.

The part of your refrigerator, the thermostat inside it, tells it to power up, and that is working as long as it's got power.

We have a Kelvinator from the 70's at least, my husband inherited it & had been using it for 15 years or so. 5 years ago my husband and I started preparing for it to die because it makes this awful crying noise when its hot out and in the winter it leaks...The damn thing just wont quit.

I was thinking about it the other day, how years ago we went fridge shopping to decide on a replacement, just so sure it only had months left to live. Never pulled the trigger because being frugal and all we didn't want to replace an appliance that served its purpose. I just can't believe its still going. It seems to be healing itself too, it not longer makes that loud noise in the summer, still leaks a little though. So if there are new Kelvinators on the market, I say buy one of those...ours is 45 years old and runs like a champ.

Keep in mind that appliance efficiency has increased dramatically since the 70s. If you sit down and do the math, it might make sense to invest in a new fridge.
