"Hey Rick, Is everything ok? You haven't seemed like yourself lately."

"Oh yeah man I'm doing ok. Dank memes are just getting harder and harder to come by."

I just keep getting older, and the dank memes stay the same age..

Alright, alright, alright

Yes they do. Yes they do.

In the future this will be known as the dark age of dank memes.

It's beaten so much that it's dead even in its afterlife.

Is there an afterlife after the afterlife? Or are you just gone proper?

Everyone knows if you die when you are dead you go to Detroit.

And yet, the algorithm still hasn't removed it from the front page.

This raises an interesting question. For those that believe in the afterlife, do they think they will be immortal in the afterlife?

What a brave "confession" from OP

Why fix the problem when you can gaslight and mock your content producers users? Great job, reddit, inc.! Fuck your own income! And Fuck Jared Leto and Snoop Doggy Lion Dogg too.

I got one of those new AOL discs in the mail. Supposed to get like 100 hours of internet. Everyone is moving towards the internet nowadays.

There was a time in my professional life where every 3.5" floppy disk I owned was a re-labeled AOL disk.

I still have the original Worms as a 3.5" demo disk

Dude, this is what humans have been doing for all of time. Except, in the past people would read the newspaper or Time magazine or Rolling Stone or whatever then talk about it with friends. Then TV came around and people talked about tv shows. Now the internet is here and people talk about cats, video games, and angry lesbians with purple hair...(I dunno, I just report the news)

The algorithm "change" is untrue.

Reddit algorithm change vs. default frontpage 'staleness'.

It's just people "feeling" the front page is slow these days. It's confirmation bias.

Here is the min/avg/max upvote overview for top25 on /r/all during that period as well http://i.imgur.com/inSHXFK.png

Australians are loving that they're no longer the butt of the "no blue links" joke.

Upvotes doesn't tell you anything about the "staleness" of the front page. For that you need the age of the posts.

Posts that stay longer in the top 25 spots will have a higher score since they're on the front page.

I'm guessing the r2 between score and age is positive and is around 0.4 at best. That would mean at least 60% of the variance in age can't be explained by score.

i.e., you are correct to first order, but there are other factors that can contribute as well.

Yes, there's also the "soft cap"/"score normalization," which is what was actually changed - not the hot algorithm.

If you take a look at the mean line in this graph: https://i.imgur.com/inSHXFK.png

And then see that changes to the soft cap were made on Aug 6, and reverted Aug 27. Here

It makes a bit more sense

How did the change to reddit's ranking process affect the posts which were displayed on the front page? Was it rolled back as the admins claim? https://np.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/3nq15z/how_did_the_change_to_reddits_ranking_process/

Reddit algorithm change vs. default frontpage 'staleness' https://np.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/3nqxum/reddit_algorithm_change_vs_default_frontpage/

No - Australia fell into the ocean. That's why there are no posts from there anymore. It just hasn't gotten to the front page yet.

[–]Please_Pass_The_Milk 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

The /r/dataisbeautiful post is flawed, as has been pointed out multiple times. Charting the average age of posts on the front page does nothing when the duration of their stay is the perceived problem.

"The number of votes has simply outpaced the hotness algorithm"

The most upvoted post, "Active Shooter Reported at Oregon College," took, by some accounts, more than 12 hours to make its way to the front page,

That was not true. Twelve hours after the report of the active shooter another news story took the top. Why would a news article about an active shooter stay on top? Like many people i changed my upvote to a downvoted when another news article with details of the aftermath was reported.

also

"There was a short period of time where we made a change that made the velocity of the front page slower, but we reverted that weeks ago and all algorithms that determine hotness are exactly as they were," he wrote. "Nothing has changed

I heard there were like 2 shootings in US recently, never heard of any, never saw them on reddit. I live in Europe, GMT+2(GMT+1 at winter)

We average a mass shooting a day here.

And still believe the solution is more gins.

Depends. Carson's solution was to tackle the guy.

Not only would I not probably not cooperate with him. I would not just stand there and let him shoot me," Carson said. "I would say, 'Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.'

He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.

Well, maybe he could.

well, more gins are solution to everything

I feel like that is a semantic point. Whether the algorithm changed, or the environment changed, as an end user I don't care. The result should not be content floundering on the front page for full days.

You may argue correctly that the algorithm never changed, but he is also correct that content isn't cycling like it used to. Something clearly isn't working because reddit announced that they are going to work to "fix" the problem.

Isn't it weird how everyone is feeling it at the same time though, I felt it even before everyone started posting about it

https://www.reddit.com/r/AdviceAnimals/search?q=purple&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all

There's a lot of people seeing purple links and staleness before as well, but at that time they just blamed Australians and the British.

If you felt it before everyone started posting, clearly everyone didn't feel it at the same time.

Because everyone posts what they feel...

So I'm gonna give you a basic timeline of how this went down:

  1. Reddit's algorithm is the same for ages, during this time some people may feel like the front page is stale, others may not.

  2. Reddit changes the score cap, some people notice that there are more posts with 5000-8000 posts than before.

  3. Some reddit admin does an AMA and gets asked about the higher scores on posts, confirms that the score cap was changed.

  4. People ask if this wouldn't mess with the "hotness" and cause the front page to be slower, the response is that yes, that's an unintended side effect.

  5. People whine incessantly about the slow front page and reddit reverts the score cap change.

  6. People keep whining and claim that the front page is still slower than before.

  7. Looking at statistics show that the front page has exactly the same speed as before the score cap change.

  8. People ignore the facts and still claim that the front page is slower than before.

  9. Reddit maintains that the algorithm is the same as earlier, but admits that the algorithm may still need to be changed as it wasn't built for this sort of traffic.

Erm, didn't one of the admins make a comment about the change and was open to changing it back if they decided that it was an actual problem?

I'm pretty sure they just admitted to it recently

[–]Absay 0

It was the CEO who admitted the front page felt stale too for him and that the vote algorithm, which is the same as always, will be fixed after they tried a new one and had to roll back to the original.

You gullible folks will buy anything someone in authority tells you. The admins said it so it must be true! There's no change no matter what your lying eyes are telling you. It doesn't matter that the latest mass shooting didn't appear on reddit for 8 hours. The front page is current, I tell you, CURRENT!

I don't know about you, but i saw the post less than an hour after it was posted.

No, but OP's comment is an exemplar of gaslighting.

Anyone else notice the bear's nose looks an outlet?

Go to "Top > Hourly". Fresh content always. Feels good man.

Don't think this should be confession bear. Maybe nerd one.

If you feel Reddit is unusable because your front page is slow, try using /r/all instead until they work out the personal front pages. /r/all has had no issues that I've seen.

Am I the only one that knows how to sort by "new"?

Am I the only one around here that hasn't noticed a lack of new content? You people need to stop checking the front page every hour. Go do something else and then come back. Also not going past the third page is a good way to keep content fresh.

Well it might please you to know that this is at the top of /r/adviceanimals at the moment, and that's after only an hour.

Admittedly it's because I have Reddit set to hide posts after I've voted on them so the last three days' posts aren't there now, but still...

the last three days' posts aren't there now

They wouldn't be anyways

Be aware that there are probably several people you know that roll their eyes every time you mention a reddit post in real life. Were on the same internet, reading the same content... there's bound to be a few people that have caught on and secretly find it obnoxious.

Here is what the linked meme says in case it is blocked at your school/work or is unavailable for any reason:

Confession Bear

Post Title: Me irl

Bottom: BUT I'VE NOT BEEN VERY SOCIABLE OR FUNNY LATELY DUE TO REDDIT'S ALGORITHM DISPLAYING OLD CONTENT

Go to your account, click on the tool icon in the top right and adjust these options:

show the spotlight box on the front page (it shows new and promoted links, and gives you a say in what's spam and what isn't.)

show trending subreddits on the front page (a list of popular and notable subreddits to check out)

show me links I've recently viewed

compress the link display

show additional details in the domain text when available (such as the source subreddit or the content author's url/name)

don't show me submissions after I've upvoted them (except my own)

don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them (except my own)

I dunno if it's just me... But last night and today it seems like it is back the way it used to be... Or at least feels like more and new content again near the top every few hours

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_BOOBSIES 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

OP is the front page of Reddit irl.

If anyone asks what's wrong, you can joke that your algorithm just isn't working anymore.

Maybe if people didn't keep on posting memes about "the algorithm," then they wouldn't be seeing the same shit over and over.

Especially when they find out about it on Facebook a few hours beforehand.

When I was in middle school I would set my TV to record Letterman and Craig Ferguson onto a VHS then watch their monologues while I ate breakfast. Since neither the kids nor the teachers stayed up to watch it I'd tell the better jokes as if they were mine and get laughs from both the kids and the teachers.

I did this every day for about a year.

just enable, hide voted posts and actually vote of posts that you read so you'll always have fresh content.

Not the most ideal approach but it works.

Just a reminder that there's no algorithm difference, and you're wrong and easily swayed by circlejerks.

Its slow because reddit is censoring content in order to prevent anymore FPH style front page takeovers

So you don't know how to click next page? What a stupid post.

Side note: who cares?

Thanks reddit, now this guy's family thinks he's depressed. If you don't stop lying and fix it soon he'll end up committed to a psych ward for trying to kill himself when he was just trying to shave. Before you know it, he'll be coloring kittens on circles of paper, and his life will change forever.

All it takes is a few more new front page posts an hour, and you could save this person's life. Call now, and we'll throw in a useless gold coin next to your post for only a ridiculously high price more. Help save the life of this reddit or and so many like him.
