Industry association Australian Pork Limited (APL) announced in January that the country’s piggeries were well on their way to eliminating sow gestation stalls, towards its 2017 target. It estimated that 65% of pigmeat enterprises were already phasing out the use of cages, which restrict a sow’s movements during pregnancy, and is a hotly debated topic on the ground of animal welfare. |
