is this some kind of strange rectangular polandball?

Whatever it is, it isn't round and I'm scared

These are strange times for polandball club. Strange times...

I think we've been going about in circles for far too long, it's time to think outside the box.

They have... hands.

Those of us who subscribe are prohibited from posting the subreddit link. They're watching us....

I'm not subscribed... So /r/polandball.

Personally I don't find it that funny myself but a lot of people like it, so maybe you will too, /u/theunknown21.

Oh know you linked it, their mods will throw a hissy fit like a bunch of babies now

There's a reason its still an amazing sub. That is why. Hail the dictatorship of polandball!

They never stop watching...

This is actually a joke that has been done in a polandball comic, so they just stole the joke and was lazy enough to just change it to squares

But they drew a whole new comic. That's doing something, it might be lame but it's at least not lazy.

May not be lazy, but speaks tons about the artist.

I mean using jokes again is decent enough, but using pretty much the same medium?

I was going to say... this seemed familiar.

It's hip to be square.

America carries around a miniature of itself. Because America loves America.

[–]Trouve_a_LaFerraille 128ポイント129ポイント  (25子コメント)

America loves America exactly like Kanye loves Kanye. Kanye is America. America is Kanye.

Yea I like Bill too but he's not like a national icon or anything. I mean yeah everyone knows and likes him but... Just nothing like the extent the OP joke implies.

Some of these comments make me feel old

Yes, Bill Nye is a national icon, I agree.

TIL Bill Nye had a kids TV show

I thought that's where everyone knew him from?

I'm not an American. He wasn't on TV here.

I know him from the internet :P

A lot (most?) of schools used the video tapes to teach science class. That's how people saw it, rather than catching it on PBS or whatever channel it was on.

Bill Nye is the reason blood platelets make me think of jelly donuts

I still remember the episode where he explained centrifugal force, with the car driving around with the door open. When I finally got my license and could drive I had to do it myself. Science in action!

Never shown at my school. Public broadcasting and radio is the best!

It gives me hope that crash course (PBS funded digital series) will be similar to the next bill Nye. Except for more than just the sciences.

We had the Disney Channel and I remember that image of his head in the lightbulb, but we never had the show over here. Probably because it was in english, and live action is almost never dubbed. (as opposed to all the animated shows that got dubbed)

Oh wow!!!!! That's why most adult Americans carry him in their hearts. They grew up learning and loving from his super quirky show.

He also had a part on a local seattle show before the kids show started.

Almost Live Clip from Youtube

Yes he did science experiments

That's why everyone from America loves him!

Canadians love him too! Doesn't matter where you're from, if you're under 30 you grew up watching him in elementary school.

I'm 36. I watched him on Almost Live.

Seattle kids grew up with him! Saw him around the city a lot. Also enjoy going back and seeing young Joel McHale.

I wish The 206 was as good as Almost Live!

Holy shit The 206 is so damn bad. John Keister was smart for jumping off that ship. They should have let new people produce it but still feature the old guys in some skits.

I always asked myself why reddit loves him (I grew up in Europe). Saw this and understand it now.

English. Never heard of him until reddit destroyed my life.

English also here. I thought he was the guy who played Davy Jones

That's Bill Nighy, close but no cigar.

Fun fact: he has a condition that means he can't extend those two fingers.

Actually not so fun, come to think of it.

Bill Nighy is a national treasure.

I thought he was the guy who played Bill Nye in The Big Bang Theory

Turkish but born in England, didn't learn about him in primary either. :<

We had Patrick Moore, Brian Cox, Carol Vorderman and Michaila Strachan to teach us stuff.

We totally won.

American. My TV friend was Mr. Rogers.

I didn't know about Bill Nye until Reddit as well.

Can Confirm Canadians watch Bill Nye videos in junior high.

And High School.

Really just whenever your science teacher was too tired/lazy/hungover to teach.

German, never heard of him until Youtube debate with Ken Ham.

Dude I watched him as a kid in S. Korea.

Doesn't matter where you're from

It kind of does. :) Late 20s here from Europe and never heard of him before reddit.

I'm 35 and Canadian. I prefer Beakman's World.

[–]Itz_The_Bees_Knees 6ポイント7ポイント  (11子コメント)

I was more of a Mr. wizard kid...

I'm sure you've seen this but it fucking kills me.

Oh how I wish it was still socially acceptable to treat people this way.

What's stopping you from treating children like idiots in an educational setting? You can do it, I believe in you.

Oh man... that was awesome!

I actually watched the episode at the end recently, where he drives off. He as teaching the kid how to record the speed of sound. Giving the kid a walki-talki and firing a starter pistol at 1,000 meters or something. Kid had to measure the time between hearing the sound on the walki to hearing the sound naturally and calculate the speed of sound.

glad someone else remembers Mr. Wizard...

Did you watch Wonderstruck on CBC?

Agreed! Apparently he was really big around the world, and huge in central america, even tho the show had to be dubbed.

Watched in elementary school? I used to have my mom wake me up early on friday mornings so i could watch it before school.

Seeing as his show aired in 1993, assuming an audience that was 10 years old at the time, the average age of bill bye viewers should be around 32 years old.

but you aren't accounting for the fact that many people (wouldn't be surprised if they still played them to this day) had bill nye played for them in school. i know that a whole generation of early to mid 20's grew up watching bill nye in school

Yup, 24 here. He's my hero scientist man.

I'm 18 and Bill Nye was a household name for all my science classes throughout all my school years.

Confirmed. 18 here and watched this hero throughout grades 1-12

Confirmed, 29. Love me some Bill!

I have legitimate Canadian friends that have never heard of him :(

The fact that he's relevant and at forefront of huge debates makes me so happy. Our child hero evolved into our adult hero.

This is so accurate. This reminds me of a 3 year long devotion to Bill. In middle school, kids would peak their heads in the door of other classrooms and shout, "Bill Nye the Science Guy". Everyone in unison, "BILL BILL BILL BILL"! Ah, good times. Our senior year of high school, one of the kids who went to that same middle school, shouted Bills name randomly on our way to Disneyland for our Senior Trip. Everyone, even teachers erupted, "BILL BILL BILL BILL".

Edit for grammar and clarification

That guy has an entire generation of Americans fucking chanting his name. And they said nerds weren't cool.

Catchy theme song with his name being chanted in it will do that.

why isnt he your president yet?

Are americans the only ones who love bill?

Not all Americans love Bill, someone posted this sign

We clearly protest

British person here: I don't think I ever saw him on TV growing up. The only way I, aware of him is due to the Internet and Americans speaking about him.

Americans and Canadians.

He's popualr in Canada too. Videotapes of him were used to teach lots of science classes.

I've never even heard of him before I saw his name on reddit. And to be honest, this is the only place I've ever seen his name.

Yeah, I was thinking, wasn't this originally a Polandball comic?

Scrolling through the comments I for got this wasn't a polandball comic.

It's an old one that someone copied with these blasphemous rectangle drawings.

Edit: Here it is. And it also turns out it was originally a tumblr post that was made into a polandball comic

i wish i understood the comedy in this joke i cant even understand what its supposed to mean, and i watched bill nye

I love how the England flag is used for once, not that fucking union flag.

Bill was a god at my high school.

I don't get it.

popular kids science show with bill nye, intro song went something like "bill nye: the science guy, BILL BILL BILL BILL"

TIL other countries don't like Bill Nye.

WHY!?

You are severely overestimating the popularity of american celebrities that aren't A list movie stars or Michael Jordan. Other countries don't like or dislike him, they just don't give a shit.

I think I speak for most of Europe when I say we only know Michael Jordan from Space Jam and then he used this fame to make some shoes.

Yep, grew up in non-english speaking country, never heard of him until reddit. Like some else mentioned we have our own science/educational TV shows for kids. I did remember watching other western imported programmes like National Geographic and Lonely Planet as a kid though. And also Power Rangers of course :D

About science! BOOM! Hear that? It's our rocket taking off to Mars! BOOYA BILL TAKE US THERE! BILL BILL BILL BILL

Because he was on the TV in the US, but nowhere else. Any developed country has their own science shows, why would they need to show Bill Nye instead? So we just don't know him. Well, we do now, after having to listen to Americans going on and on and on about him on the internet.

Strangely, smaller countries would just straight up voiceover US/British shows of all types.

When I was in Greece in the eighties a lot of the stuff I saw was dubbed: Muppet Show, Dallas, etc.

What's the point of dubbing a science show though?

There's production value in the Muppet Show or Dallas, but making a science show is not that expansive (comparatively).

Because its cheaper and exactly because its production is simplistic. There's not much in the production that makes it region specific so it doesn't make a big difference. Contrast that with a drama or a comedy show where culture plays a big role in the enjoyment.

Without reddit I would have never heard of Bill Nye. To be honest I don't even know what he does besides being a "science guy."

He is also an aeronautical engineer and designed parts of the hydraulic system that's in every 747.

so he's not actually a scientist? or is he called the "science guy" and not a scientist because he only has a bachelor's?

Yeah in australia we have this guy called Dr. Karl

You don't see us screaming all over the place that American's dont know who he is

Were not offended, We like our culture and like it more then we do yours, as you do with your culture, As does everyone else with there Culture as it is what most suits them and there up bringing

Now fuck of cunt wid ya blu jeans and hotdog you fucking shitcunt

Dr Karl is the fucking shit. Oh man. He's definitely one of my personal heroes... a friend of mine bought me one of his books as a gift and got it signed. In their brief exchange, it came up that I teach science- so when I got the book, it came not only with a letter from him, but his personal fucking email and phone number, saying I should drop a line any time I wanted to talk teaching.

To my great shame I was never game to contact him. He's Dr. Goddamn Karl.

You silly fuck what were you thinking! Just kidding I get it.

I googled Dr. Karl and it came up with a whole bunch of Twitter BS like he did something wrong. What's up with that?

The Abbott government payed him a pile of money to promote some shitty 'science' report that they were releasing because obviously people would think it was credible if a familiar science person was backing it. When the report was released however, it was all bullshit so everyone got angry with him for taking tax payer money (since the government paid him) and accused him of intentionally misleading people when it came to issues like climate change.

In the UK it's Professor Brian Cox (no, not the actor, the physicist/rock musician).

Brian Cox is all over the Tele in Aus Mostly on the ABC and SBS (Our BBC)

Maybe it's more that they don't need him as much as we do. We do have more than our fair share of religious nuts and anti-intellectuals.

It's not that other countries don't like him, they just don't know who he is.

I love Bill, I love pretty much all pop science presenters but he's no Sir David Attenborough.

His shows don't air in the UK. We don't have exposure to him except via the internet.

I'm Scottish and only heard about him through reddit. In fact I wouldn't even know if we watched him in school, I was too busy being a little shit

I love Bill Nye, but I've never seen this as a stereotype.

Unfortunately, too much of America thinks the world is 6000 years old and climate change doesn't exist and vaccines cause autism and....

I'm American a I grew up watching Bill Nye the Science Guy; it was my religion as a kid. Watched it way more than cartoons. And I have no clue what this is trying to say. Can someone ELI5?

Can someone please explain how this is funny at all?

No clue. I'm American and nobody I know watched his show and we didn't watch it in school. From what I've seen of him he seems like a smart and personable guy but I really think this American infatuation with him is overblown. It doesn't seem to exist, at least not to this extent, outside of reddit.

Canada is just as insane about Bill Nye!! Childhood science class (highschool as well) right there!

I can't help but wonder why Bill is America's educational idol. Sure, he is up-to-date on current issues and regularly gives talks about them. But I think it goes deeper.

For me, Bill was my teacher when my teacher wasn't. He taught things in a way that if I were to watch one episode per day back in middle school, I'd surpass my teacher.

Highest science spending in the world baby! 'merica!
