Divorce Corp (2014)

Documentary, Drama, History, News [1 h 33 min]
Dennis Braun, Mark Byron, Ulf Carlsson, Sol Gothard
Director: Joseph Sorge
IMDb rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 7.8/10 (186 votes)
Caution: plot summary may contain spoilers.
More money flows through the family courts, and into the hands of courthouse insiders, than in all other court systems in America combined - over $50 billion a year and growing. Through extensive research and interviews with the nation's top divorce lawyers, mediators, judges, politicians, litigants and journalists, this documentary uncovers how children are torn from their homes, unlicensed custody evaluators extort money, and abusive judges play god with people's lives while enriching their friends. This explosive documentary reveals the family courts as unregulated, extra-constitutional fiefdoms. Rather than assist victims of domestic crimes, these courts often precipitate them. And rather than help parents and children move on, as they are mandated to do, these courts - and their associates - drag out cases for years, sometimes decades, ultimately resulting in a rash of social ills, including home foreclosure, bankruptcy, suicide and violence. Solutions to the crisis are sought out in countries where divorce is handled in a more holistic manner. (IMDb)
Critical reception:
Divorce Corp. has received an 82% positive rating among audience views on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently holds a 50% Rotten rating with critics, based on 10 reviews. (Wikipedia)

Says 8.1 for me.

Tried to watch it. Good topic but so flawed in understanding or expressing the legal standards and individual rights for the sake of inflaming the audience to the point of misleading. No good.

As someone who has had professional exposure to family law, I am totally of the agreement that this doc is cherry picking extreme examples of improprieties in the courts, though I saw my own share of judges and commissioners who flagrantly ignored precedent and statute in reaching decisions.
That being said, if you ever plan on being married, WATCH THIS MOVIE. You need to know how bad it can possibly get if things don't go as planned. At the very least, put together a bare-bones prenup agreeing to binding arbitration should your marriage end.
On another note...DAE SCANDINAVIA!?!

On another note... how come prenups can get thrown out?
If prenups can get thrown out, if a wealthy spouse gets paid by a poor spouse, if a cheater can profit off of a divorce, if a judge can ignore precedent, the constitution, and statutes, then family law is not worth the paper it's written on.
It's basically a lottery. A roll of the dice. Did I get a good judge who likes me? No? Then welcome to hell.

This generally happens in community property states, because all property and income acquired over the course of the marriage is divided by equitable distribution.

I heard it was because the woman argued she was pressured into signing it or that there was a different VERBAL agreement LATER during the marriage that "nullified" the prenup.
It's basically whoever can afford the best lawyer.
The best lawyer can't even be figured out because the more you charge, the more people think you're good at being a lawyer and there's no standard of measurement.
Either way, you get married, you're gonna lose money if you ever get divorced. You cannot guarantee marriage forever. You don't need a "fault" for a marriage to be divorced (no-fault). It makes more sense to raise a family and have children out of marriage and raise them together with your "technically-wife" without signing any license.
I used to defend marriage... I used to be the biggest defender of it... I still believe marriage might one day be possible, but not under US law. I've been advised that if I marry anyone that isn't as rich as me then I should put everything in blind trusts and do sneaky financial things to hide my money.
I just don't see any way for marriage to continue in the US.

Of course this documentary would be recommended to us by someone who is immersed in /r/TheRedPill.

AHAH! We found the divorce lawyer! :P
But you must admit that I have yet to meet someone who divorced and was happy about the results from family court unless they had a ton of money and their wife or husband got nothing.

A litigant in a legal battle being unhappy with the outcome is not proof the outcome was unfair.
[–]RubiksSugarCube 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
The general rule in family law is that the outcome is good if both parties are equally unhappy with it.
