"Ever see this? It’s a homeless guy but he’s got a dog… The dog’s really thrilled with this idea. The dog’s going, “Hey pal, I can do this by myself pretty well. The longest walk in the world you got me on here.” - Norm MacDonald

I was listening to a radio short about dogs and the topic of homeless with dogs came up. The guy basically said most people look at the dog sadly but the dogs are almost always some of the best socialized and happiest dogs he's ever seen. Why?

1) They're always with their owner 2) They're almost always outside

[–]Enchilada_McMustang 91ポイント92ポイント  (46子コメント)

Who can think any different? It always seemed obvious to me that a dog living with a homeless person that really cares for them has a better life than any home dog..

People humanize the dogs. Dogs eat a lot less than us, mine is fine with 2 cups of food a day. And if they are taken care of they are always outside and always have company, mine is alone at least 6 hours every day.

I've got a great dane pup and he barely goes through 4 cups a day now.. the food just sits in his bowl and he picks at it whenever.

As someone who's owned labs their whole life, this is a very weird phenomenon in my home right now.

By black lab eats every meal as if it's the last food he will ever see

My sisters lab ate his collar with the leash hooked on and required surgery to remove. They are a... special breed.

If you asked my dog, he'd claim I'm starving him.

And about chokes trying to get it down. I have to split my labs good up for morning and night or else he throws up. He's crazy.

My Black Lab-Collie mix eats like a vacuum.

My Shepard mix eats like a bird.

I have a 5 month old Golden Retriever and I feed him, three times a day, 175 grams of kibble each time. He just keeps eating and eating. It's insane. I've no idea why he does it, I've never known a dog like it. Had an amazing Chocolate Lab before this guy, never really bothered with food.

We weigh him once a month to make sure he ins't getting fat or anything and the vet is like "yeah he's a perfect weight, just going to be bloody enormous."

I think differently. What if the dog is underfed or needs veterinary care?

[–]cellists_wet_dream 48ポイント49ポイント  (6子コメント)

It's funny how we are asking this of the dog but not the person.
Homeless dogs are almost never on leashes. They could leave if they were unhappy, and the alternative is going to the pound and most likely getting euthanized.

Dogs decided long ago that it is an easier life to be with a human than not.

This. Dogs are pretty much the only species to have made the choice to be fully domesticated...

You may say, but wait, my cat... But not. Your cat and every cat, rules the house. You feed its majesty :)

I'm technically "homeless", I have more food for my pup than I can carry, his shots are up to date. I had to deworm him a couple weeks ago. I check him for injuries all the time, and we keep each other warm at night.

If you ignore getting it dewormed, vaccinated, fixed, licensed and groomed, then ya you're right.

Vaccinations are pretty important though right?

Tack on being fed a consistent diet and treated promptly for injuries and it's ever more of a strain to make your comparison

Not sure about other cities, but the SPCA in our town has a "No questions asked" vaccination day every year. They just ask that if you don't need it, don't try and take advantage of it because they have a limited number of shots. You pay $10 and get every vaccination your pet needs. They also do a program where homeless people can get free check ups for their pets on a regular basis.

Uhhhhh, I would say a large percentage, possibly a majority of dog owners I know do just this. Essentially they have an animal in the back yard that barks and gets fed and watered a few times a week.

a large percentage, possibly a majority of

"Just arbitrary figures I'm making up to make my point"

I don't think a dog really needs any of those things to be happy and live well, but I see your point. We humanize dogs and expect that they need and desire all the comforts we can provide for them. If you've ever seen wild dogs doing their thing I doubt you'd argue that they'd be better off vaccinated, groomed and living in a house. Not that there's anything wrong with those things, but I just don't see how a dog dying naturally of a disease is any worse off than a dog living a full life of countless traumatizing, painful and confusing trips to a vet.

The dog dying of a disease isn't even my concern as much as a diseased, underfed, rabies case sleeping on a city's sidewalk is.

It needs vaccinated, and fixed - for us more so than for itself.

You're absolutely right, but we weren't really talking about the societal and environmental implications of vaccination etc in this thread. We're talking about the dog. The dog doesn't care about a potential rabies epidemic.

Of course we know homeless people pick up strays and give them little. There's no way that dog was his pet before hard times hit and is already fixed and vaccinated. Oh wait, that's right, we don't know his story....

I wonder sometimes homeless people use dogs or cats or whatever cute animal to get sympathy or more sympathy. I think people are more likely to give to a homeless who has a dog with them than to one who doesn't.

Honest question: Why do homeless people often have dogs??

If I had to guess, I'd wager on companionship, unconditional love, and a reason to keep on living because you have something you look after and take care of relying on you.

Companionship and protection while they sleep.

I've never been in that situation but I would think the primary reason would be to combat loneliness.

A more cynical person might say it helps them collect more money while begging.

Also, it makes it easy to pick up chicks

Cynical? More like realistic.

People are much more willing to support a dog than a human. The helplessness of an animal really tugs at the heartstrings of a lot of people, more so than a human that at least has some degree of autonomy over their existence.

It's why I carry bags of dog food in my car.

I just went on the facebook page of this association. The president of the association was taken in for questioning Thursday. He was let go on the condition that he had to give the dog back. The police inquired into the homeless victim and it appears he was not involved in any trafficking network. And the ID papers he had for the dog are valid. As of right now, the dog was handed to a state facility and will be given back at a later date.

The president of the association will have to face charges for group theft with violence. He risks being fined and a prison sentence. However, no inquiries were started on the association itself.

The president of the association admits to the theft but denies the violence. He says the homeless man threw himself on the ground in an effort to keep the dog.

The association will file a complaint to the police against the author of the video. They say "In order to make some buzz, they uploaded a 20 minutes video which was very insulting about me, filled with incitement to hate"

I hope this helps. Sorry for the bad translation, I'm a french speaker

I have a human kid and an animal kid and yea its pretty much the same. Also, your dog doesn't talk back or say they hate you. *added bonus

I hear ya. I know it may appear to sound naive to say that the way I feel about my dog is akin to a parent's love, but I don't have kids, so this is the closest I can imagine what that feels like....

Story time! I'm extremely non confrontational and expert conflict avoiders (to the point where I actually went to therapy for it). But this one time was an exception and of course it was for my dog.

Me and Lady were waiting for the bus to take us home one evening. It was dark, completely silent, the bus station was pretty much empty and we were alone. Until a drunk who was literally around twice my size (tall fat man vs short thin woman) stumbled up to us. Lady growled. That is the only time she has ever growled at a human. She's gentle and lazy and does 't even bark when guests come over. But it was this really deep dark growl where you barely hear it but you feel the vibrations in your stomach. I apologized of course and asked him to please keep his distance. He loudly slurred that all dogs love him and that I'm making her insecure.

To prove he was right he then fucking threw himself at my growling dog to give her a hug or whatever, (which is a really dumb thing to do at any dog, let alone a 85 lb Rottweiler/AmStaff mix). Lady snarled and growled like I have never heard before, I swear it echoed across the entire town, it sounded like a sound effect from a werewolf movie, while backing away from him, hunched down, tail between legs, ears back, to avoid him. She reached the end of the leash and he tried to approach her again, despite me telling him no and trying to push him back which he didn't even notice. Nope, he seemed determined to get his face chewed off.

So I womaned up and stepped in front of him and slapped him as hard as I could with the back of my hand across his cheek. Lucky for me he fell over, mostly from surprise and drunkenness I think, and I ran to my friends apt and had my dad come pick me up. I had no idea what just happened and I felt so bad for slapping that poor confused old man and just leaving him there without even apologizing.

And so goes the story of that one time in my life I used violence and the felt super bad even though I did nothing wrong.

You did the right thing.

If Lady bit him, people would have probably blamed it on her and not on man who clearly has no idea how to handle dogs.

Also she's such a pretty dog. Send her hugs from me :3

Yeah if Lady bit him I'd have had to put her down. And I don't even want to think about that.

I will echo others and say you did the right thing. Absolutely an acceptable time to use the sort of force you used. The man was probably correct, that the dog sensed your discomfort and reacted accordingly. You could have continued to passively plead, and he would have continued to ignore you. The dog would have continued reacting to your rising stress, and eventually the dog would probably have mauled him.

The guy probably wouldn't have stopped unless you slapped him.

Yeah I'm so mad that nobody did anything about it. People are fucking sick.

To be fair, I think that if I saw a commotion like this on the street involving people wearing uniforms, I'd be confused. I don't know if these people are stealing a dog or retrieving a stolen puppy. If I jump in, is the headline gonna be "Dog Rescue Thwarted by Stupid Passerby?"

"The police finally found my puppy but the stupid person jumped in and helped the dog-napper get away! Why, stupid person, why!?" cried little Susie, a 5-year-old Nobel Prize Nominee for Adorableness.... We were not able to reach Stupid Person for comment, but it is assumed that they're in hiding from the mobs that now hate them.

Edit: Does't look like uniforms, actually. Still, though.

[–]Welcome_2_Pandora 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah that makes sense. That would happen to me.

I feel so sorry for this man watching that video. It's quite clear that he cares a lot about that little dog. If he was just using it for begging he wouldn't be making those desperate wailing sounds and running after them, leaving all his other possessions behind. If they really cared about the way he was keeping the dog then they should have HELPED him treat it better. Give him a proper lead for it, arrange for the proper vaccinations and give him some food and bedding for it. Stealing the dog, renaming it and putting it up for adoption (for a fee, as well!) is simply callous.

Reddit is mainstream now so this is what happens. This isn't new. Any time a site becomes big, companies are going to abuse it. It happens with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. And now Reddit is on the list.

Time to jump ship and find a better alternative. Snapzu and Hubski are pretty decent, they just need people!

The shotgun:

  1. Find picture

  2. Post to 10 different subreddits at the same time

  3. Repeat 24/7

Doesn't matter how good or interesting the pictures are, one of them will eventually hit the frontpage. Having such an edgy all-caps username also helps a little.

I wonder if there are some people here who are similar to Digg's old Power Users...they form a little clan and upvote each others posts just enough to get them out of the bottom of the barrel. The increased visibility leads to a greater chance of the post blowing up from legit user votes.

If you or I post something in a big sub it sits at 1 vote and is never seen. If they do, their friends help give their posts that initial shove....and they probably comb through our failed posts looking for shit to repost the next day (or hour).

I'm pretty sure I read something on here about literally this, where the big submitters time their submissions so they can all be upvoted and not interfere with one another.

I wonder if some of these are bots or people secretly built or hired by Reddit. A never ending list of new submissions and current discussions is what makes Reddit work. I think it would only take a few days of no new decent material to break Reddit's inertia and fail as a community.

Reddit claims to have millions of active users - but you'll notice a submission will only have a few thousand votes at best. If that reflects how many people are on here at any given time, and only 0.1% of them are active submitters, "dry spells" would definitely happen.

If I was management there of I'd make sure to hire some stay-at-home moms and give them a quota of submissions per day.

In a lot of similar pictures/threads, I see people saying how fucked up and selfish homeless people are for having a dog. I'm a dog owner with two female pitbulls, and they wouldn't mind sleeping on the streets with me, as long as they were still loved and got some food every day. One of my dogs used to eat turds and breakdance on top of turds, I'm pretty sure she would be ok with this. That said, if the owner wasn't watching and taking care of this dog, there's a pretty good chance the dog could find itself at some kill shelter or something. They both add a lot of value to one another's lives.

People don't seem to realize that dogs are pack animals, and they are willing to go through shit if the entire pack is going through it together. My dog used to sleep in my room, and sleep and wake up along with me. Often, he used to wake up and look at me, but watching me asleep, he would try to sleep again...dogs have evolved as pariah animals, and they are very well capable of living on the fringe of human society with their hooman.

So true. It's crazy how people feel worse for the dog than the human. Dogs can adapt to pretty much anything, as can humans, dogs just don't realize that sleeping on the street sucks. My dog just farted on my ribs while I was typing this.

Lots of homeless people don't like staying in shelters because of all the drug use and theft that goes on over there. I'd like to see somebody try to steal from this pair...

Except for the accommodations, not much different than me and mine.

My chick always feels so "bad" for homeless dogs but they always seem as happy and healthy as any I have raised. Dogs don't know internet and cable. Probably good for both of them.

I'm glad that folks around here are almost universally wonderfully compassionate toward dogs.

I wish that folks around here were almost universally wonderfully compassionate toward humans.

What does it mean that the vast majority of the posts in this thread are about dogs, and not about homeless people?

During the day he's my best friend. At night he's my pillow.

Dude, do you run the internet from behind a purple curtain?

Really? I thought it was New Haven.

Nearly spat my coffee out. I had a friend in New Haven get his bike stolen while he was riding it.

We call those bikejackings now.

I sometimes wonder if you've got the secret recipe to build high-profile celebrity accounts and sell them off to interested parties. How much will the Republican nominee pay for this account, next spring?

This is from Istanbul, Turkey. Bus stop in front of a shopping mall. Very crowded place

the worst part is, there are millions of people in this world who would take that dog in, pamper him, feed him, spend thousands of dollars on vet bills to get/keep him healthy, give him a good home, and an amazing life.. yet the VAST majority of those same people wouldn't pay any attention to the human being next to him. (or worse) many of those same people would go one further and candidly admit that they feel like this guy is a blight, or a nuisance on society, and wouldn't want him sleeping in their house, let alone the gutter directly in front of it.

Dude this guy had a front page post just the other day as well

God dam it. I just wanted to sit down, enjoy my coffee, eat my breakfast sandwich, maybe do some reddit, and wait for the bus. Now I have to stand here like a jabroni because some dude out on his luck is sleeping next to a dog and I'm not an asshole..... Well not that big of an asshole.

This is heartbreaking. Someone get that dog a pillow.
