Unless the guy has a ridiculous number of proprietary software that needs updating, it shouldn't take 3 days.

Reinstall OS, followed by installation of everything (if on hand) should take about 3 hours max. The only thing I can think of being problematic is downloading your Steam library again because of the download speeds of your network.

To be fair, it's the reason I bought an iphone 5s and my new 6. I still support Android for better features. I was pretty upset about iMessage when i found out about it. It's the same thing as a console exclusive, but its not reasonable for people to have two phones, where as people can own two consoles

[–]PlanZSmilesi7-4790k | EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4GB | 32 GB Ram 2

Yep. It's a convenient messaging system and Android has caught up with hangout being it's "imessage" but most people I'll be talking to will have iphones so it forces my purchase.

[–]PlanZSmilesi7-4790k | EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4GB | 32 GB Ram -2

The phone must have wifi calling on it and even then it's not as functional as iMessage. Using Facebook is a good replacement, however, most people own iPhones so requiring Facebook (hangout is still better) or any other app that is not default is not as convenient.

I don't like apple for there business and "innovation", but owning an iPhone is more convenient.

Track. Offroad. Autocross. Drag strip. Those are some of the legal options.

Also, higher performance vehicles can allow more options in daily driving scenarios. I can merge faster, stop harder, and maneuver better than someone in a shitty minivan. Plus I know the limits of my car and bike, so I have a better chance in a panic breaking scenario of not locking up the brakes or being able to swerve to avoid shit.

[–]ComradeHXSteamID: ComradeHX 0

Being forced to go out of the way to fully enjoy higher performance vehicle legally isn't the same as just being able to get objectively better experience playing a PC game.

Still does not change the fact that IRL you are in more danger the faster you go(unless you are stopping in middle of road for no reason or similar); in game it's basically the opposite(higher fps == more responsive game == less change of dying, which won't kill you irl anyway). Going faster IRL is subjectively better while having higher fps in game is objectively better(and cheaper, by far).

Also, I'm more into armoured plating than pure speed.

How so? I get held up more by traffic than you do by console gamers. Not the best analogy, but speed limits are based around what is a safe speed for the average driver. So if we made higher safety requirements for cars (like Germany) and had a much more difficult driving test (like Norway), wouldn't only the people who could drive 100+mph and know what to do when hydroplaning be on the roads? And the roads would have much higher speed limits? Again, not a perfect analogy, but it kinda works.

You talk about danger, but there is a metric shit ton of safety equipment at any reasonable racing event. Every event I have been to (including a university held autocross in which no car was getting higher than 40mph in a controlled environment) involved an inspection of the car, required full safety gear (including helmets), and had run off areas if you lost control. Car and bike guys know how risky these things can be, so we try to limit the risk as much as possible.

Hell, look at the fatality rates for Moto GP. These guys are pushing bikes (so no protective cage around them) to the 1% of the 1% for dozens of laps. They crash all the time and serious injuries are rare due to good track and suit design.

You talk about cost, but it's the same argument console gamers use: $300 xbox is cheaper than a 2 grand PC which is faulty because a) don't need a 2 grand pc and b) you'll need a computer anyways to do your taxes/reddit on. Same thing with performance vehicles. My SV650S was $1900. A good miata can be found under 3 grand. Both of these can be used for a daily driver and replace the $18,000+ corolla that's consider a bottom-end car. (if you want to go into details about cheap cars I can, but both of these vehicles are considered quite good for what they are.)

Oh and you mention armor? Join us at /r/Volvo . My C30 can do about 130 mph stock. Remove limiter + cheap tune: about 150mph and 0 to 60 in about 6.5 seconds. Not bad for a tank.

Finally, nothing can replicate the feeling of driving a car/bike to the limit. No video game can replicate the seat of the pants feeling of everything working and the risk involved. I can't feel the heat from the engine, the wind rushing by, or the shift of weigh compressing the front suspension as my car dives into a corner which I have to balance with the throttle letting on power as the wheels scream in agony...

P.S. Sorry about the essay. I just get this analogy a lot here and I wished more people were more accepting of the automotive and motorcycling communities.

How does this even make any sense? Are you saying don't blame the computer because of the OP? I mean here you can totally blame the computer for being slow and shitty, because he probably has a slow and shitty laptop. Can someone explain this to me, I feel stupid.

He does have a point though. PC gaming requires more work to keep up to par where as consoles are static.

I'm sitting here wondering what actually has up be cleaned, updated and installed on a pc to make it Facebook-worthy... I mean possibly CCleaner (maybe) and Windows updates I guess which take 10 minutes tops and reboot? What else are you installing that's so painful you must bitch about it through Facebook during the install process. Really?

I'm not sure what's worse, the console guy, or the the fact that OP wasn't man enough even to type out his comment, let alone send it.

At least get the size right next time.

I usually keep a backup of my computer with a basic installation of all the apps and programs I use, and re-image to that if things go wrong on my PC. Of course all my images and and videos and important things aren't stored on the same Hard Drive as the OS...In 2015 it shouldn't take 3 days to get your computer running.

What imaging software do u use? I really need to do that next time I reinstall.

Since when did a reformat take 3 days? Did he mean after 3 days of contemplating, he decided to take 30 minutes of his day to reformat?

plot twist : he uses Gentoo.

3 days

Back up files: 10 minutes

Pre-downloading drivers and installers: 30 minutes

clean OS install: 1.5 hours

Install programs and drivers: 20 minutes

Personalize and customize settings: 20 minutes.

New computer in about 3 hours if you're efficient. Let's call it a day to account for slow internet, bad hardware, set and forget processes, and steam install + the first few games you want to play.

What the hell is taking this guy 3+ days?

If you have SSDs lying around and gigabit internet, yeah that could work.

Install programs and drivers: 20 minutes

Let me see here. I have 1.5mbps connection.

  • Download Windows: 5 hours 55 minutes.
  • Download updates: 4 hours 26 minutes.
  • Download programs (Adobe products, etc.): 14 hours 49 minutes.
  • Download a single large Steam game (GTA 5): 3 day 2 hours.
  • Customize your install: 1 hour.

That's over 3 days.

His point is literally that consoles are better because they don't allow you the freedom to mess them up yourself. Well, there is a solution to that.. Don't install stupid crap.

[–]zacnooNo thanks, circlejerk.

His point is that his shitty laptop isn't as good as playing games as his console. You just misinterpret it as an attack to your circlejerk.

What's my circlejerk? The keep your PC well maintained circlejerk?

To spend 500-600$ on a pc and call it better than a 300$ console.

What kinda car you got bro?

Ah yes, the most important mod to cars and computers, the driver mod.

If it takes 3 days to complete basic maintenance, that PC was never meant fro gaming to begin with, even then it's long past its prime. Not surprising given it's a laptop.

so are you 50% car and 50% guy? What's the ratio?
