Why is the lamp smoking?

Peer pressure mostly.

Part of me thinks you posted this simply in the hopes that someone would ask that question, and you could make that joke.

is it your elbow? my elbows are always doing that.

ugh, well done

I don't get it :(

He was asking what part of him made him think that. If it was his elbow or not.

Stop

^ who upvoted this?

Don't encourage this.

Those high pressure lamps with their mercury vapor and sodium. Wattage a desk lamp to do?

That was probably the weakest pun I've ever encountered. You're still getting an upvote, but it was.

Probably just an incense burning

Yeah you can see the tip of the stick of incense. Just the tip.

This makes me want a Swiss cake roll.

OMG yes! If I wasn't drunk I would go out and by some, I'll just settle for the cookie brownies from dominoes

Dude, we get it, your lamp vapes.

That lamp is a cloud chaser. #vapelyfe

I think you should unplug it for a few minutes.

This would make a great live photo.

A cinemagraph?

What exactly is a live photo? I've heard people talk about it recently but I don't actually know what it is.

It's a new feature on the iPhone 6S. Basically when you take a picture, it records a few seconds before and after, so if you press harder on the screen, it shows a ~5 second video that may or may not give context to the picture. It's been done before, mainly by BlackBerry and HTC.

How new! A moving picture!? That's unheard of!

Next thing you know people are going to be ripping them off by making .gifs of these live photos.

[–]Anderz 0

Here's a similar photo I took that's static, if you're interested. https://flic.kr/p/qbvM9k

That's some Gandalf-level shit right there...

Really cool! I wanted to frame this but when I printed it the smoke wasnt moving. What am I doing wrong?

You need to print it as a live photo.

The slight pause is /r/mildlyinfuriating 6/10

The buoyancy driven flow is laminar to start with, then transitions into an intermittent region of a toriodal quasi-steady nature before breaking up into turbulence at the top of the screen. This is phenomenal.

My cat's name is Mittens.

[–]Intensive__Purposes 23ポイント24ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yup I immediately thought the exact same thing when I saw this

then transitions into an intermittent region of a toriodal quasi-steady nature

these are KH instabilities you noob

I also do not see any toroidal vortices

The theory predicts the onset of instability and transition to turbulent flow in fluids

What? Umm yeah, they are KH instabilities, but that doesn't mean it isn't a transitional flow. I am surprised that you took the time to make a throwaway while not taking the time to read the darn wiki. The curl at the right hand edge definitely is a toroidal vorticy, though it is not purely axisymmetric.

I'm not arguing that it is not a transitional flow. KH facilitates downscale transfer. You're clearly just trying to sound smart when you don't understand shear instabilities.

"intermittent region of a toriodal quasi-steady nature" is nonsense when this is clearly KH. I still see no toroidal vortices. I just needed to call you on your bullshit

Trollolol? I definitely understand shear instabilities. It is KH leading to an transitional region, it is quasi-steady and it has toroidal nature. Quit being so pedantic over semantics.

it has toroidal nature

You're talking nonsense

Quit being so pedantic over semantics

I hope to review your next paper

By saying toroidal nature all I meant was that the right half of the acknowledged asymmetrical flow emulates on the shape of a toroid. I'm sorry that got your panties in enough of a bunch as to merit a new account.

You're welcome to, as I put a lot more thought into the wording of my manuscripts than something on fucking /r/oddlysatisfying. Thanks for the impromptu peer review though.

Even more, you can clearly see why turbulence is a fractal phenomena.

Not sure why you are getting down votes :/

Big whirls have little whirls, that feed on their velocity,

And little whirls have lesser whirls, and so on to viscosity.

Haha probably there aren't a lot of fluid dynamics fans around here.

Have ever killed someone?

I don't understand how turbulent flow can have a repeating pattern. Care to explain for me?

Between smooth laminar flow and turbulence there is a transitional region. The periodicity is within this transition, and is instigated by small oscillations, seen horizontal from the top of the lamp.

Full turbulence would be the more chaotic pattern seen at the very top of the frame.

Right sorry, I should have been more specific. How does this gif make a perfect loop if there is turbulence?

Well the periodic transition is regular, but from the top section it looks like the OP faded a few of the first and last frames together. There are locations where the concentration of smoke simply disappear, not through diffusion or advection.

Quite relaxing.

[–]PM_ME_KITTENS_PLEASE 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

Can anyone who might know better confirm that this is Kelvin–Helmholtz instability?

I don't know better but I think you're right. The air close to the lamp is warmer and goes up creating an area of lower pressure that moves the smoke to the left. Plus the smoke have initially laminar flow but one one side encounter the warm ascending air, gets momentum and goes up faster then the smoke one the other side crating the swirls.

[–]CaptainObvious_1 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah it is. From the shear layer between the still cold air and warm smokey air.

I could masturbate to this.

...aww, who am I kidding; I already have!

Dude, that is fucked up! Worse?! I thought the same thing! Then I thought, "What the fuck's wrong with me?" Then . . . well, you know . . .

It's like those wigs that judges wear

Well done, OP

Weed so dank the smoke rollin' itself a joint.

Why does this smoke swirl?

[–]CaptainObvious_1 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Kelvin helmholtz instability created from the shear layer (two flows at different velocities).

You are correct in attempting to apply a principle of fluid dynamics to answer this question, but I think a better explanation would be the turbulent flow is disrupting the laminar flow as the smoke moves into cooler air, causing the newer, warmer smoke to overtake the older, cooler smoke, thus creating the curl.

[–]CaptainObvious_1 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

There isn't any turbulent flow before the formation of the vortical structures. The flow doesn't become turbulent until the breakdown of the structures, so I'm not sure where you're trying to go with your explanation.

Edit: to be a little more clear with what I'm saying: the cold air is for all purposes still and not moving, and the smoke is laminar for the beginning. Instabilities in the form of kelvin helmholtz instabilities begin forming and create the vortical structures, these structures grow and become unstable and breakdown into turbulent flow.

Reminds me of mountain wave turbulence.

I wonder how recreate it

Why can't I just have something like that as a desktop wallpaper? Is that possible? I need to google that shit.

Can this be made into a live wallpaper for an android? That would be amazing

anyone see the Mercedes Benz logo towards the end of the swirl

Up next: room on fire but smoke still curls

ELI5 anyone?

I would love a little machine on my desk that does this. So relaxing to watch

I haven't smoked for years, this really makes me want to smoke.

Endless swiss cake rolls.

Wow, it's like the visual equivalent of a Shepard Tone.

The loop on that gif is so great too, extra satisfying.

I quit smoking 6 months, 1 day, and 4 hrs ago. I didn't need to see this.

This happens a lot with my incense when the air in my room is really still, quite mesmerizing

[–]Anrza 0

Endlessly lagging gif.

ITT: OP has jokes

We get it. You vape.

That seems dangerous.

I can understand why you would think that. It looks like the lamp is smoking and about to burst into flames. But what I think is happening, is they are just burning a stick of incense or a cigarette.

It's definitely incense. You can see the stick at the bottom. Also, it's pretty common for the smoke from incense to swirl like that.

If it is endlessly curling then why does it end pretty quickly

Fractal waves.

this is so groovy the incense is a constant flow of energy that radiates from a single source as the earth rotates the smoke billows endlessly as the sea like dragon breath in autumn fog
