They sound like my conservative father. Apparently the rules of my house (I.e. Don't mention Fonda unless you wanna hear about how horrible she was) also apply to reddit.

And most of the "Hanoi Jane" posts are by people who's parents weren't even born yet when the war was going on. I'm 60 and I wasn't old enough to go to Viet Nam, yet we suddenly have dozens of guys older than me on here giving a shit? Get the fuck out of here. A bunch of personality starved 20 year old douchebags who want to pretend to be pissed off is even more aggravating than anything Jane said or did.

You're 60 and not old enough to have been in Vietnam? Fucking bullshit. That would make your birth year 1955. The last American troops were pulled out in 1975. Draft age is 18. You very fucking well could've been in Vietnam, for at least 2 years or so, give or take a few months. By your logic, Americans who weren't old enough to serve aren't allowed to feel anger towards a women who cost American POWs their lives? Fuck you. She's a traitor and should've been treated as such.

She literally got American POWs killed....... Like literally. She called out one prisoner trying to slip her a paper with everyone's ssn on it.

Yeah, she's garbage.

I thought that was disproven? What's your source here?

edit: not defending her, but... that particular story has been called out as being false.

Non-American here... I feel like I've walked into a lynching.

Young American here, I have no fucking idea what they're talking about.

Read about what she did during the Vietnam war. She supported and aided the country we were at war with. Was very disrespectful to the troops, most Vietnam veterans hate her with a fury that is still white hot to this day.

She sided with the commies during the vietnam war.

I'm on the right and dislike her for doing that. But I'm also a big fan of free speech, even in times of war.

As long as speech doesn't directly promote violence it should be allowed in my opinion.

I realize in the case of Fonda she may have directly caused some US soldiers to be killed, so if that's the case then that speech was morally wrong by my system. Otherwise people should be allowed to say what they like, offensive or otherwise.

British here, any chance someone could explain what all the fuss is?

FWIW she has since apologized for the Hanoi Jane pictures

I would like to say something, not just to Vietnam veterans in New England, but to men who were in Vietnam, who I hurt, or whose pain I caused to deepen because of things that I said or did. I was trying to help end the killing and the war, but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I'm very sorry that I hurt them. And I want to apologize to them and their families. [...] I will go to my grave regretting the photograph of me in an anti-aircraft gun, which looks like I was trying to shoot at American planes. It hurt so many soldiers. It galvanized such hostility. It was the most horrible thing I could possibly have done. It was just thoughtless.

Not saying it changes anything or excuses her behavior. I'm just adding some more information to the thread.

Edit: Actually, I take that back. She fucked up and she's sorry about it. Move on.

Hey everyone, blame the girl who shittily made jest in an effort to end a horrible war. Don't blame the politicians that started it, forced young men to go, and didn't pull out for way too long! Remember, hate the hippies and draft dodgers! Because they're the bad ones!

If you're counting on Americans to read books, rather than look at girly pictures to form opinions regarding war - and the people truly responsible - you're going to have a bad time.

Not saying it changes anything or excuses her behavior

I think it does. She was a kid and kids do stupid things. She called herself out and apologized. What more do they want? There's worse that people have forgiven. It's pointless to keep this rhetoric alive.

[–]the_whore_whisperer 16ポイント17ポイント  (2子コメント)

as an adult, I would like to point out the fact that adults also do stupid things

She was 35. 35 years old. That is not being a kid. That's being an adult by well over a decade.

Also, I'm confused by your use of "rhetoric." It doesn't make sense.

I've done dumb things at many ages.

I'm 52. I still do dumb things. I still make mistakes. I still do things I regret. Thank God, I haven't done any of them with reporters and cameramen recording my every move for posterity.

It's a lot easier for me to admit I was wrong, to apologize and to forgive now than it was when I was younger..

My dad died in Vietnam. I knew people who were in the Hanoi Hilton. I've never really liked Jane Fonda and I still don't really like most of her movies.

But she took responsibility for her actions, she explained her motivations (which I believe were honest), she acknowledged the pain she caused, she called out specific things she did and she said she regretted them.

She apologized. From what I can tell, she is sincere.

I don't know her. She's not enough of a pop culture presence to annoy me. I don't have to like her.

But I see no reason to carry any animosity toward her any longer. Even if she hadn't apologized, it's wasted emotion. Being that she has apologized, it would be a pointless one.

we all do things we regret, I hate how reddit looks at celebrities in black-and-white, I've seen it so many times here, and whenever the beatles comes up on reddit now I see: "yeah, but did you know that john lennon beat women?!?!?!" -

the difference between us and celebrities is that our mistakes aren't broadcast to the entire world

in reality, if someone does something you disagree with do you automatically imply they're evil and incapable of remorse?

I personally admire anyone who openly apologizes about fucking up in the past, that shows a lot of self-awareness and personal progress

and I think s/he was referring to this definition of rhetoric: "language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content." as in 'empty rhetoric' as in, everyone's extreme jane fonda-bashing in this thread is full of empty, hostile rhetoric that doesn't make sense to some of us

Fonda called returning POWs "hypocrites and liars," adding, "These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed. ... Pilots were saying it was the policy of the Vietnamese and that it was systematic. I believe that's a lie." https://patriotpost.us/pages/80

She said these things while sitting an on anti-aircraft gun that was used to shoot down pilots that were being held as POWs a hundred yards away. She was 35.

Now just imagine if it was ISIS. Still admire her?

And yet there are 35 year olds who think that Iraq was responsible for 9/11 and that Saddam had WMD. I guess getting suckered by propaganda is only bad if it's the wrong side's?

What is your argument? That there are idiots in the world? I think we can call that one a definite yes.

Do they use their fame and power to call POWs hypocrites and liars on the national stage? No. This is what people were pissed about. To put it in a modern context, it's like saying that prisoners being tortured by ISIS are just making it up and people shouldn't be so gullible, and they are just lying about it.

It really should have ended her career.

and that Saddam had WMD

Considering he prevented inspections for years before the war it's a kind of forgivable belief is it not?

Those people are worthy of loathing as well.

I agree as far people being complex and deserving of forgiveness on a personal level. On the other hand, there seems to be this sentiment that once someone is a celebrity they always have to be a celebrity and anything less would be cruel and unusual punishment.

She has continued to pursue a career that is basically a public popularity contest. She has also continued to voice her opinions on social issues. Those who don't think she deserves the platform shouldn't have to applaud her or remain forever silent.

Even in this thread there are many learning about her past for the first time.

[–]mr_poppycockmcgee 7ポイント8ポイント  (3子コメント)

I don't mean to say that people, and Jane Fonda, can't be remorseful and guilt-ridden, all I'm saying is that she definitely was not a kid when she did that, so the whole "kid's do stupid stuff" doesn't really hold up.

Okay, I get where's he's going with "rhetoric" but it's still not exactly the right word; there's no rhetoric to begin with. It's more like vestigial bias.

counterpoint; she was a hot blonde, that's got to take away a decade or two on her maturity!

I believe the term he was looking for is "discourse"

Yeah. I think you're right, actually. She says she fucked up and she's sorry. I'm gonna change that part.

No one is obligated to give a shit if she's sorry or not. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy is the only named crime in the Constitution for a reason. People are right to hold a grudge.

I'm not saying anyone is obligated to accept her apology or forgive her. I personally believe that people have been forgiven for far worse. I'm of the opinion that true remorse won't reverse the damage of one's crime but I'm not going to hold a grudge against her for something she deeply regrets. Feel free to hate her for as long as you see fit, though.

We give aid and comfort to the enemy every day. How much gas do you put in your tank each week. How much gas do I put in my tank each week? How much money does Saudi Arabia pour into terrorist bank account ts each year?

Jane Fonda was an idiot. She thought that she was doing the right thing, but she was arrogant and naive. So what's the difference between Jane Fonda and most of the rest of us? She admits that she was naive and arrogant and wrong. Most of the rest of us try to pretend that we aren't naive or arrogant. And God help us, we can't admit when we are wrong.

People who don't admit it go on acting like idiots.

[–]NEVER_SUBMIT_2_BROKI 12ポイント13ポイント  (7子コメント)

Except I believe her account of what happened. It was completely blown out of proportion.

It happened on my last day in Hanoi. I was exhausted and an emotional wreck after the 2-week visit ... The translator told me that the soldiers wanted to sing me a song. He translated as they sung. It was a song about the day 'Uncle Ho' declared their country's independence in Hanoi's Ba Dinh Square. I heard these words: "All men are created equal; they are given certain rights; among these are life, Liberty and Happiness." These are the words Ho pronounced at the historic ceremony. I began to cry and clap. These young men should not be our enemy. They celebrate the same words Americans do. The soldiers asked me to sing for them in return ... I memorized a song called "Day Ma Di", written by anti-war South Vietnamese students. I knew I was slaughtering it, but everyone seemed delighted that I was making the attempt. I finished. Everyone was laughing and clapping, including me ... Here is my best, honest recollection of what happened: someone (I don't remember who) led me towards the gun, and I sat down, still laughing, still applauding. It all had nothing to do with where I was sitting. I hardly even thought about where I was sitting. The cameras flashed ... It is possible that it was a set up, that the Vietnamese had it all planned. I will never know. But if they did I can't blame them. The buck stops here. If I was used, I allowed it to happen ... a two-minute lapse of sanity that will haunt me forever ... But the photo exists, delivering its message regardless of what I was doing or feeling. I carry this heavy in my heart. I have apologized numerous times for any pain I may have caused servicemen and their families because of this photograph. It was never my intention to cause harm.

http://www.janefonda.com/the-truth-about-my-trip-to-hanoi/

According to what she said, not only is her apology enough, I honestly don't think it was necessary beyond a simple "it was a misunderstanding"; because from the sounds of it, it was.

Yup.

She got meme'd.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I got a friend to watch it recently because he loves cheesy movies and sci-fi, expecting we would bond over this flower-child space-adventure masterpiece, but I was shocked at how sexist he thought it was. Sexist!? Because Barbarella dares to have sex and shows some skin? If it was a Bond film, no one would bat an eye if he had sex with multiple partners in a film... actually, they would if he didn't. But Barbarella decides to have sex with more than one man and suddenly she's not a person?

I learned that day that my friend was not as progressive as he seemed, he was just a prude.

My uncle too he's also a Vietnam Vet. He'd probably smash the computer with a baseball bat. Thankfully he doesn't know about reddit.

Ahhh yes, both of your family members would break their computers over a picture on the internet. Thats normal

I just showed this to my step dad and he didnt give a fuck

Hes also a vet, had a grenade thrown in his tent, jumped out and everyone but him died in that tent...his buddies.

He got into a firefight with the people who were left and they fended off the attack. He had a nv soldier run up on him and pull the trigger, he was out, so he bayonetted my step dad in the knee. My step dad was also out of ammo, so he coulsnt shoot...but there was a gun next to him, grabbed it and shot the guy off of him.

Wasnt able to walk right ever since. And he doesnt give a fuck about Fonda. He hates the people that sent him and his buddies to war

Maybe your guys relatives need meds, or maybe yall should stop bullshitting or pretending to know how they'd feel about this post. It probably isnt as bad as you think. At most they probably just say "fuck that commie"

Old school traitor.

Old school traitor.

You're right, but let's be clear about what she was a traitor to. Her unforgivable mistake was to put blame on the American soldiers, men and women who didn't have a say in the mission they were given and who were put into deadly situations. That she let herself be used as a pawn by the North Vietnamese is naivete on a criminal level.

But let's not forget that this was an evil war brought on by politicians and war profiteers who never understood (or cared) that the Vietnamese were fighting for their independence. We started out supporting a colonial power, then stayed because of our "anything but communism" ideology. It allowed us to justify bombed civilian locations and lower ourselves to commit war crimes that didn't put us any higher than the enemy we fought. But that's what war like this does: it lowers the moral level of all sides.

You ignore the horrible things the north was trying to do, and ended up doing after we left. Happy to supply references.

Not saying Fonda was right with the tank pic but the soldiers still pulled the triggers, lit the villages on fire, and raped the women. This is all documented. I agree the politicians are scum for sending them to this ridiculous, pointless war, but they can't be let off the hook either.

Because Hollywood runs on pure talent, not who your parents are.

I think she's a legitimately good actress. Watch Klute if you're ever in any doubt about that. Now her brother Peter on the other hand stinks. Apart from maybe a couple of passable performances, most notably in Easy Rider, he's absolutely awful.

And he mooched off of Jane for decades.

[–]PM_ME_UR_SMALLBOOBz 72ポイント73ポイント  (48子コメント)

Why the down votes for people referring to her as Hanoi Jane? Her being hot doesn't excuse her actions.

Because this is not /r/politics or /r/history. This is about how cool and hot she was and still is.

I think the argument some people are making is that despite the fact that she's hot and this photo is old school, her actions in the past are not cool.

What were her actions? Posing for a stupid picture in a tank? That's FAR less egregious than the war itself, all the innocent lives that were lost at the hands of US politicians and soldiers pulling the triggers and dropping the bombs.

Fonda called the returning POWs "hypocrites and liars and pawns", adding about the prisoners she visited, "These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed."[43] In addition, Fonda told The New York Times in 1973, "I'm quite sure that there were incidents of torture ... but the pilots who were saying it was the policy of the Vietnamese and that it was systematic, I believe that's a lie."[44] Her visits to the POW camp led to persistent and exaggerated rumors which were repeated widely in the press and continued to circulate on the Internet decades later. Fonda, as well as the named POWs, have personally denied the rumors,[40] and subsequent interviews with the POWs showed these rumored allegations to be false as the persons named had never met Fonda.[42] - yeah, she's great. such a very, brave and powerful woman.

I can't believe the amount of bullshit and lies floating around about Hanoi Jane.

She created radio broadcasts designed to demoralize American troops and convince them to retreat. That was her offense. The rest of it is either unimportant or untrue.

Jane spent her life trying to do the right thing and getting led astray by one bad person after another. She backed the black panthers for Christ's sake, she was clearly retarded!

That said, she did a lot of good in her other philanthropic work and I think she always had her heart in the right place

She created radio broadcasts designed to demoralize American troops and convince them to retreat. That was her offense. The rest of it is either unimportant or untrue.

I think you're conflating Hanoi Jane (Jane Fonda), with Hanoi Hannah, the handful of English-speaking Vietnamese women who broadcast radio shows in an attempt to demoralize US service men.

WTF are you even saying? Please elaborate! Vietnam was a hugely unpopular war- America's first war that the people didn't rally behind, and an enormous waste of teenage lives- mostly from below the upper-middle class- and tons of them not white. But what does your hypothetical situation of her using a racial epithet have to do with anything at all?

The fact she openly supported the people killing those young teenage lives you're talking about?? And I was referring to the fact that her actions are being excused while Paula Dean is chastised for saying the N word about that same amount of time ago. You're defending her actions of being a undeniable propaganda tool used against those teenage lives. While if she had said the N word back then the media and hipsters would call for her head.

I can't believe anyone is still upset at her for the Vietnam era stuff. I know it was a big deal at the time, but now we can acknowledge That it was an unnecessary venture. I have family that fought over there and they felt the same.

PS: Commie Babes are hot!

Hanoi jane. Pfft. Killing is killing. She poses in a U.S. aircraft gun and you're all okay.

It's not about the killing, it's about the label on the gun. She got labelled Coke, and you're all Pepsi.

She's great. Fuck the Vietnam apologists. America and Americans should be deeply ashamed of what happened there.

Yeah! Fuck the south Vietnamese for wanting to govern themselves as well! The French also had no part in the conflict either, just America!

Come on. The South Vietnamese government was appealing to the West because it wasn't Communist - not because it was in any way representative of the population. The government and the people were in that instance two very separate entities.

And you're brushing atrocities and a more or less engineered war under the carpet because "the French were involved too!"

Yeah, the constant attacks on America get old after a while. But this war is almost the epitome of why they started - it's not a great topic to take a stand on. I'd say you need to pick your battles better, but if that advice ever worked we might not have gone into Vietnam in the first place.
