ACTRESS Emma Watson has come under fire on social media for saying some of the best feminists are men.
In an interview with The Guardian about sexism in the film industry, Watson said women are “just as guilty of discriminating against women” as men.
“Some of the best feminists I have encountered are men, like Steve Chbosky who directed me in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and director James Ponsoldt who I am working with at the moment [on The Circle],” she said.
“Some women can be incredibly prejudiced against other women.”
Frustrated Twitter users took aim at Watson’s “problematic” comments.

Watson, who was recently appointed the United Nation’s Women Goodwill Ambassador, added that the fact that she had worked with male directors 17 times and women only twice is further evidence of sexism in the film industry.
“But I am lucky: I have always insisted on being treated equally and have generally won that equality,” Watson said.
“Most of the problems I have encountered have been in the media, where I have been treated so incredibly differently from my male co-stars.”
Since being catapulted to fame while starring as Hermoine in the wildly successful Harry Potter film franchise, Watson has become known as a vocal supporter of the feminist movement.
After Watson was appointed as the UN’s Women Goodwill Ambassador, she kicked off the launch of the UN Women’s #HeForShe campaign with a rousing speech in which she extended a “formal invitation” to men to put gender equality on their agenda as well.
“The more I’ve spoken about feminism, the more I have realised that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop,” she said in the speech.
