I have two children and have only used called the potty the potty and the toilet the toilet, and that's the same for everyone else I've met in English speaking western Europe, apart from adolescent males who have ingested so much American culture via their media intake that they believe it makes them sound edgy or sophisticated. The origin of the word 'crib' is very old and very clear - a manger or "child's bed with barred sides". The origin of it's use in American African is relatively recent with there being conflicting ideas for its development.

One line of academic thought puts the development down to the use of mangers for slave bedding, but the earliest written examples of it being used for the dwelling place comes only in the twenty-first century and after it was used as an identifier of allied Street gangs in the late 1970s.
