I don't understand abusing your wife, I mean, It's -your- wife. That's like keying your own car.

My car doesn't nag me all the time for no reason. My car doesn't treat me like crap because I am going through a rough time and can't find a job. My car doesn't tell me I can't get a dog.

This got serious rather quickly

Yeah, no man should be denied a dog.

Nope, never happened.

My parents denied me a dog all my life

tbh I'd sell my car if it denied me a dog.

So...did you sell your parents?

Though I'd rather he had a job before getting a dog. They can be very expensive to maintain as animals.

[–]Master_TimberWolf 9ポイント10ポイント  (4子コメント)

Is it cheaper to maintain them as something other than animals?

As food, it'll only cost a few bucks in spices.

If you learn the skills and do it yourself, there's a little cost for taxidermy supplies, but maintaining then after that if pretty much free. Try to keep them dry, dust then from time to time.

Then why do all those homeless people have dogs?

Not paying vet fees, most likely.

A dog doesn't really mind. You ever see a homeless guy with a dog? The dog is like "this isn't really that bad! I was begging for food before anyway!"

I wonder what the ratio between spare change given to homeless people with dogs, compared to homeless people without dogs

Well if you don't have a job, then you shouldn't be taking on a pet that takes money. So no he shouldn't have a dog.

(Cough,cough)Michael Vick(cough).

Let me preface by saying the following isn't by any means me taking your statement as negative or taken the wrong way, I'm just piggybacking to give my opinion to maybe help other people think about those decisions more carefully.

I refuse to visit my wife's idea of getting a dog because regardless of how much you want something, it's not always the right thing to do. She is on the road from 7:30am to 5:30-6pm Monday through Friday for work while I'm 9 - 5 while also attending school. At least 3 out of every 5 weekends we are out of town and then half of the ones in town are busy.

Regardless of how much we, especially she, would like a dog it is far and away from being both practical and ethical. I've already had multiple animal companions growing up and the few years before we met I raised a Rhodesian Ridgeback from around 7-8 weeks until I decided it was best for him to be with my ex girlfriend for his benefit. My new job and living area would have been too small and my life far too hectic to put my best friend through. No matter how much I love him, he is a living and feeling companion who deserved better than what I could give him in terms of attention, exercise, and play time.

Moral of the story is that no matter how much you want something, the pros and cons always wildly shift when considering a pet companion. Their life is literally in your hands and if someone can't provide them a good life then they are hurting another life by being selfish.

Pro Tip: When you're in a relationship with someone, especially marriage, there are a multitude of decisions from small to large that need to be decided on together that usually involve compromise. That decision is far and away more complicated when consisting of a new life within your own.

Except Michael Vick. He can go fuck himself

I'd rather the dogs do the fucking, in this case.

You sure about that...

"Oh look, you're running late to work, I'm going to break down for no reason"

Cars, like wives, rarely break down for "no reason".

Usually it's either a defect that's been there since the beginning and is finally causing a problem, or neglect/lack of regular maintenance that causes a breakdown.

Or a random freak event, like a punctured tire or tripping, falling, and landing dick-first in someone who isn't your wife...

...are you my neighbors fighting outside at 6:30??

prolly just something else they said on the show and was probably another reddit post like this or something.

Q. The Silmarils were crafted by Fëanor using the light of the Two Trees. How many sons did he have?

A. None, they're fucking elves

Seven! And they were all assholes

Dude, no love for Maedhros? He worked with the high king Fingon and rallied the Elves, Dwarves, and Men against Morgoth at Nírnaeth Arnoediad

I'm flunking highschool Spanish, but I could tell you all seven sons of Feanor without skipping a beat.

I'm more interested in the answer that Stephen Fry gave. This is obviously one of those bait questions where you say "10" and the sirens go off.

There are 613.

TIL... I feel sort of deprived having grown up in an area with very few Jewish people.

I vaguely recall the answer is "unknown". Moses was so pissed when he came down from Mount Sinai and everyone was being all pagan and shit that he smashed the tablets.

EDIT Here's the part of the episode: https://youtu.be/D6iAS55CBkU?t=22m49s

Answer: QI says 14 as per Deuteronomy and Exodus, 613 if you count all of them. My memory is for balls.

i always thought the first commandment meant that that God knows there are other gods, humans should just not worship them

At the time it was written, there were other gods acknowledged by Judaism.

Question: How many commandments are there in the Old Testament?

There are actually about 14-17 mentioned in Exodus:

1 You shall have no other gods before me.

2 You shall not make for yourself a graven image...

3 You shall not bow down to them or serve them...

4 Show mercy on those that love me...

5 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain...

6 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

7 Six days you shall labor...

8 On the seventh day you shall not do any work...

9 Honor your father and your mother...

10 You shall not kill.

11 You shall not commit adultery.

12 You shall not steal.

13 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

14 You shall not covet your neighbor's house

Also, no coveting of his wife, man-servant, maid-servant, ox, ass or anything else.

But various different religions group some of them to make 10.

I keep wondering what would have been on the third tablet.

"I've got good news and bad news. The good news is I talked him down to 10, the bad news is adultery's still in." - Moses

but my neighbors ass is so covetable

There are 613 total in the Old Testament https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/613_commandments

My favorite is number 171 which states a high priest must marry a virgin.

I like 169 and 170 better. It reads like someone thought they had found a loophole for 169 and that's why 170 was written.

I see that they were against male homosexuality (157), but there is zero mention of opposition to Girl on Girl action...

That's because all these old books were written by men and they love watching lesbians get it on.

they really had some grudge against grapes too...

Like those bait-clicks. "You wont believe number 171" :D

406 is great without context.

  • 406. Not to leave the fat overnight — Ex. 23:18

Right, but usually commandments 1, 2 and 3 are packaged into a single commandment. The same with 7 and 8.

Thats kind of the point - they're packaged together now but initially, they weren't.

Then that hippie guy came along and summarised all of them into "love each other", which is simpler. But the real improvement was when it got changed to "be excellent to each other". Much catchier.

"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished..." Matthew 17-18

And before any of you scream "OUT OF CONTEXT!" This is exactly the context intended.

I think you guys might be taking about 2 different rebel bearded hippies..

"... And party on, dude."

Remember Black Sabbath and keep them holy. Check.

Except, and this is the thing that boggles my mind, that's not the Second Commandment. This is the Scond Commandment:

"You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing loving kindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments."

The part that just, just does in my head is the line, "For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God". One of the very first things when handing down the commandments that God does is tell them he's a jealous bitch.

Fifteen-..! Ten..! Ten commandments!

The fact that /r/dankchristianmemes is the sub of the month when I clicked into comment made me forget my comment because of the symmetry.

Why is this funny?

I found it funny. Stephen Fry was trying to bait him into being wrong and saying 10 because there are actually more. Instead, he replied with an answer that's actually more correct than than Stephen Fry's smart alecky one.

What makes it more correct? Is there historical evidence supporting either side? Genuine curiosity, not belligerence.

Is that how history works? It's history until you prove it's not?

How much historical evidence do you need to prove that something never happened?

Is there historical evidence supporting either side?

Setting aside the fact that it's hilarious to ask for historical evidence that Moses hung out with God on top of a mountain, this is not even how evidence works. You don't need evidence to show that nothing happened.

Is there historical evidence God gave 10 commandments on stone tablets to Moses on the top of a mountain? No, of course there is not.

Is there historical evidence that Harry Potter had a quest to kill Voldemort? No, but if the question is "How many Horcruxes did Voldemort make?", the answer isn't "Zero because it never happened in real life".

All scientific evidence points towards a christian/jewish-type god not existing. So its waaaaay more likely (I would go as far as saying infinitely more likely, but I don't want a mathematician up my ass) that Jimmy's answer is more correct than any other possible answer.

The necessity of proof always lies with the person who lays charges.

I want to know this too. I wish an expert could tell us about it.

I don't think anyone "knows" it didn't happen. At the same time, no one "knows" that it happened.

On top of that, you can use logic. In the story God talks to Moses, I'm an adult so I can realize that didn't happen. Therefore I have a pretty good guess that the story is bullshit.

Yeah, I guess so. I'm assuming there's a significant lack of evidence for real stone commandments handed down by God.

Plus, a panel full of comedians are probably in agreement on that issue anyway, so it's at least "more correct" among that group.

Common sense tends to disprove almost all 'biblical tales' from being accurate in the sense that these events actually happened. They are only lessons. We don't need evidence that Moses parted the red sea. Common sense, after a thousand years of science, tells us it is impossible.

Actually the Red Sea thing is interesting. From what I've read the Red Sea was basically a trickle stream where Moses supposedly crossed it. So it probably meant more along the lines of he found a good place to cross. But considering that Moses most likely never existed and the path the Jews took was insane and most likely impossible as well means it's all pretty much bs.

It's one of those "funny because it's true" scenarios, that's never usually brought to light.

You see, you think he's going to give the popular-opinion answer, but then he says the thing that's true instead. And because people usually shield themselves from the truth, it's funny for those of us who don't.

[–]thunderous_conqueror 2ポイント3ポイント  (7子コメント)

It isn't funny, but it helps the teenagers jerk themselves off on their feeling of intellectually superiority, so it receives upvotes.

Why do comments like yours have little crosses by them? (I'm on mobile)

You're jerking yourself off on the feeling of intellectual superiority over those teenagers right now.

Really? I found it funny because it was unexpected after his first question.

Also when you consider jimmy car was a very religious man until age 26.

The saltiness is strong with this one.

How about religious people stop hating on non-religious people, and non-religious people stop bashing religious people for their beliefs?

They are comedians and it's a joke.

Jokes, especially from the UK are usually at someone's expense.

So maybe what people really should do. Is not take jokes so seriously.

That would solve a lot of problems.

Exactly. All these people are taking this post a tad bit too seriously.

Can I have a list of things I'm allowed to make fun of then?

I just asked the same thing in the IRS/Synagogue joke thread. Apparently a joke involving circumcision is monstrous, or something.

I am all aboard that train the day that the religious people stop trying to pass/block federal laws based on their religion.

I am Christian and I totally agree. I don't think it is very loving for Christians to force their beliefs on others, and dictate how they should live their lives.

This is what most of them miss. Lead by example, not force. That is the crux and has always been what was taught.

I agree with you, but lumping all "religious" people in with those politicians is pretty unfair. These politicians aren't even likely that pious, they're pandering to a demographic.

I consider myself a Christian, and I also consider myself a socialist. Either way, my religious beliefs and my political beliefs are maintained separately.

I pretty much give up. /u/Safrosa had it right the first time.

Let it be. The worst is when people like /r/americaFya start assuming all Christians are and act the same.

It's bordering on double-standard.

But exactly like you said about pandering to a demographic, 143 upvoted his comment because 'fuck yeah, dumb Christians. All of them are the same.' is easy to get behind, apparently.

Wut? You think politicians are passing these laws at random? This isn't a dictatorship. Religious politicians and elected by religious people.

Who do you think votes for them?

Then I'd say you're a minority. Most people vote based around their morals, and if religion dictates someone's morals (which it does) then a Christian voter is going to vote around Christian morals. Some of those morals are great, others not so much

it's absolutely ridiculous! people have rights, ideas don't have rights!

[–]ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW 0ポイント1ポイント  (5子コメント)

Childish actions don't merit childish responses. This isn't god damn middle school, everyone has to stop with the "they started it" garbage. IMO taking the high road proves your point better than any argument ever could anyways. This comment isn't just for religion vs. atheists either.

How often does it happen though? from across the pond i've only heard of that woman that reddit circlejerked about for a while who blocked a gay marriage certificate or something

Literally all the time, all over the world?

It happens constantly. It's a daily issue in the States.

Not really a daily issue... maybe only during election cycles.

Planned parenthood, contraception funding, abortion laws, gay discrimination... Are you just right now finding out about the world you live in?

None of those things are big issues in the UK. Homophobia is universally laughed at (there was a district councillor who blamed gay marriage for the floods a couple of years ago, and the whole country mocked him for days). Planned Parenthood isn't a thing - all those services are provided by the NHS (universal healthcare). Nobody here objects to having easy access to contraception - no offence, but is that actually a big deal in the States? Abortion has been legal since 1967, and I don't think I've ever seen anybody campaigning to make it illegal.

Not saying there's anything wrong with debating the issues, I'm just saying that some people aren't aware that there is a debate, because they've had the debate and sorted it out years ago.

How about no?

Because, the way I see it, jokes like this are great. Not that it's hilarious. Not because it will make a believer say, "Oh, wait, maybe this funny man is right!" but because he has freedom to say what he wants. And I'm groovy with that. And you're welcome to believe whatever you want, be it Jesus, Mohammed, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or nothing at all. But anyone's beliefs absolutely should not be above criticism. Because perhaps this joke will be enough to plant a seed, or start getting a couple of people thinking differently, maybe even seeking out other's opinions.

TL;DR

No. And poking fun at people's beliefs is a great way to make them think about what they believe.

There's a big distinction there.

If you lend your name to something, and then people bash that thing and you get offended then that's your own fault.

If people directly attack you because of something you believe then that's their fault.

So bashing a religion. Fine. Bashing a person because they do or don't believe in god, not fine.

Athiesm is a stawman for most of us anti-theists. I don't know if I believe in God or not, I'm not arrogant enough to believe I have the capacity to understand such complexity either way. What I do know is religion is manipulative and is for logically simple people who can't understand complex coincidence.

How about recognising that making a fair criticism of anything is not "bashing"?

that would be nice. but religious people are not going to stop hating on non-religious because their religion tells them too.

non-religious people are not going to stop bashing religious people for their beliefs because their beliefs are hurting people.

I would assume that most religious people don't hate non-religious people, just like the other way around. It's just that you don't notice people who don't spew hate and bullshit that much, compared to the vocal minority.

non-religious people are not going to stop bashing religious people for their beliefs because there beliefs are hurting people.

If you really believe that is the reason and not simply that some of them have a very strong sense of intellectual superiority despite being clueless on the topic at hand then I think you need to spend a few days in /r/atheism.

Also, the "Hurting people" line is ridiculous too. Religions are ideologies, and like all ideologies people will take it different ways and act in different ways regarding it. Some people will do things like protest gay marriage or, if we're more extreme, become suicide bombers, but others will do good. Huge amounts of homeless shelters, womens shelters, food banks, help for refugees etc etc is carried out under the funding of churches and Christian groups. Indeed, in the UK Muslims donate the most to charity, giving around 3 times more than the lowest group. You know who the lowest group in that sense is? Atheists. Now I could be like you and claim "look how atheism is hurting people as charities are getting less money" but that's a moronic argument as once again cherry picking certain aspects of an ideology which suit your perspective that it's bad and coming to a conclusion from that is intelectually dishonest. But who would dare do something like that hmm...

despite being clueless on the topic at hand

clueless? lol what? there is no intelligence required to not belive in something. the only requirement is non-belief. babies are all atheists.

Islam and Christianity are explicit about proselytizing. It's mandatory. If you're not trying to convert people, you're doing it wrong. That alone is a strong indicator that, if they don't hate us, they at least pity and feel the need to convert us, and by extension, seems likely they want to make us follow their rules for our own good.

  1. Depends on religion, Christianity literally has a base commandment that you should love everyone and it's the premise behind everything Jesus said. Since Christianity is the following of the teachings of Jesus Christ, you'd be wrong.

  2. Yeah, that's bullshit. Plenty of non-religious people bash on religious beliefs because they are trying to assure themselves that they are intellectually superior. (Note, plenty of religious people bash on atheist beliefs to assure themselves they are morally superior as well)

[–]Aywaar 2

The trouble is that the Bible contradicts itself because Jesus also said that the old laws(as in the old testament) should be obeyed. It's all how you interpret it.

Just like all those church charities through out the US? Religion clearly does bad shit but its not without good either. Religious organizations give a lot of money to charity and organize food drives and the like.

I'm not religious myself but you need to see they do positive things as well.

Religious people have given the rest of us way too much shit over the years. I'm with Jimmy, respect only extends so far these days. Why pretend the made up stories are real when my girlfriend is really at risk of losing access to birth control and cancer screenings because of those made up stories? And I don't just mean those in the bible, there's plenty more bullshit.

How about you stop being so intolerant of my intolerance?

Not that there aren't fights breaking out in the comments, but you realise there was no hate/bashing in OP's submission, right? Even without knowing the context of the show, you'd have to stretch real hard to find something hateful or bash-ful in what he said.

Why stop there? How about world peace and a stable quarterback situation in Cleveland as long as we're wishing for things that aren't going to happen?

Let's try and be realistic here.

How about this is comedy.

Agnostic here with close friends who nearly went to seminary. It is possible. We joke about how different we think the world works, yet have almost identical views on "morality" and ethics.

How is this a relevant question? Jimmy wasn't bashing religious people. He was merely stating a fact.

How about we all lead evidence and reason based lives, instead of basing our lives on make believe?

How about you live your life, I live mine, and we avoid eachother, because you don't sound like a very agreeable person.

Which would work totally fine if religious people weren't constantly trying to force other people to live their life a certain way, and then complaining about being persecuted or mocked.

If you claim you know for certain that a god does not exist (conversely, same goes for claiming you know for certain that a god does exist), technically, that is a decision not rooted in logic and you can prove that all based around the idea that we do not know whether or not a god exists.

But modeling your behavior on the idea that a certain kind of God who wants you to do very specific things exists is not rational. If all it were was allowing for the possibility of some unspecified god existing we wouldn't be having this discussion.

This is so correct.

One group believes in the existence of something unprovable. The other believes in the non-existence of something unprovable. Both belief systems are faith-based. Arguing over which is "right" is, in my opinion, the biggest waste of time in the history of mankind.

I don't need to prove that a personal God does not exist to know that the idea of it is bullshit.

Yes, you do. How is the idea of a higher being bullshit just because?

So, you can't stop yourself from telling other people what to believe?

Why do you think that is?

I don't "bash" religious people but they are in general... rather thick.
I have met a few clever ones but they were at the same time, completely bat-shit crazy.
Either way, none of them have come up with a decent answer to the rather obvious Problem of Evil, so they do deserve quite a lot of bashing.

Reminded me of this part of the whole thing, which I liked.

I'm Christian and still find this funny

Someone shares a funny joke. The joke is at the expense of Christians. PC brigade get mad cuz r/atheism is leaking etc. Yet another example of how religion cannot get made fun of without a backlash of 'edgy, neck beard, euphoric' comments. See post of guy wearing a fedora. Lol euphoric fat euphoric atheist, euphoric. Reddit.

And then came the updated version: Matthew 22:36-40

ITT: People starting relgious arguments, and the good old 'DAE thought I was in /r/atheism'.

There are really two commandments, the others can essentially be categorized into these two.

Matthew 22:37-40 ...'Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.'

I read this as condiments at first and was thinking, why was God sending Moses condiments and were they just raining down from the sky?

Oh I thought I was in /r/funny, not /r/atheism.

Humour is subjective and all that.

No, it's r/funny. You can tell because it's not funny and you've got circlejerk on your shoes.

I don't get how this gets to the front page over and over...this joke is literally "Cuz God isn't reall!" Hurr hurr hurr

You can crudely re word any joke to make it sound stupid.
