I'm not changing my last name to "Smith"

My great-great-grandmother wiped out the unique name she had in the 1800s this way.

I'm Bengali Indian and I have a few French ancestors in my family tree dating back to the 1600s and 1700s - the village in Bengal where my father's ancestors were from was a French colony till India became independent. Through the years, the French last name was passed on to my great-great-grandmother, who, despite a very Bengali first name, was green-eyed and fair enough to pass as mixed-race, if not white.

She had no choice in the matter at all, but according to my grandfather, she regretted the name change her entire life, especially since her father was the last person in his family to bear the name, and she felt like she'd tarnished his legacy in some way.

Google says the last name is rare in France too :(

I was 15 just five years ago, but it's startling to me to even imagine I looked as young back then as 15-year-olds look to me today.

I also feel very old knowing that kids born in 2001 - who were the minnows of the student body back when I was in secondary school - are now old enough to be in high school themselves. Ah, ageing, nice to meet you.

The whinosphere spends a lot of time on the internet, so their perspectives and priorities are pretty warped regarding feminism. They seem to think that the top posts on r/Tumblrinaction represent all feminists.

The Tumblrina SJW set is pretty much a very small minority, at least in most parts of the world (IDK the scenario in the USA because I don't live there). The MGTOW/MRA/TRP types, however, think that one post = all feminists, because they've not spent enough time with people sharing differing perspectives to know otherwise. And since they are ragey as all hell, they find their target in these 13/14-year-olds (and a few 20-somethings who refuse to grow up) on Tumblr and unleash peak butthurt on them.
