When I use willpower and don't eat what I want I suffer. When I do not use willpower and eat the junk food I want I end up feeling like crap and I suffer.

Make what you want to eat something that isn't dangerous for your body. If you have sugar cravings, make a fruit smoothie. I have no idea why people assume smoothies are gross.

Thats a great alternative to sweets. Just bought a nutri-bullet you best know ill be using that every day!

As a tip, get a ton of frozen berries. They taste incredible, and are sooo much cheaper than fresh stuff. You can also use frozen melons etc.

Also, try one with a little bit of tofu in, just once. It is lovely. For example try tofu, orange juice and frozen berries.

Never tried tofu, and I have been using frozen berries you are right on that! But Ill give tofu a shot, that also sounds pretty good.

I want something that looks smells and tastes like a giant chocolate cake. Why would I eat a smoothie?

Try blending avocado with cocoa powder and sweetener or a banana.

pretty sure they make smoothies that smell and taste like chocolate cake.

No. No they don't. The package may SAY that they do. . . but they don't.

Add a few semi-sweet chocolate chips and whole milk to the smoothie. You are craving fats and sweets. The main goal here is to get enough fiber in your stomach to prevent a massive insulin spike.

If you don't dislike smoothies, you can do what I do. When you get a craving for cake, first have a smoothie as an appetizer. After you finish it, the cake can be your reward. What I've found is that after the first sip, my craving actually goes away.

Of course if it doesn't work, you'll end up eating a smoothie and a slice of cake. There might be some holes in the plan

Well, smoothies aren't good if you go nuts with them either.

Going nuts with smoothies is better for you than going nuts with cake though.

I usually add almonds, cashews, and a few brazil nuts. If you go nuts with them, they actually are good for you ;)

"Hack" your body and your mind. Figure out a way to -reprogram- yourself. Look into yourself and find out how you can manipulate your drives and desires. If you can properly manipulate your own wills and your own lusts you won't have to use willpower.

Figure out what makes you feel better in the long run.

Motivation isn't "not feeling crap about doing something" it's constantly reminding yourself why you#re doing it. Accepting the price of the reward.

That could explain the recent study that people with ADHD hyperactive type learn better when they fidget. Less self control required means more capacity to store memory.

Huh. That actually makes a lot of sense.

I wonder what that means for those who are medicated.

can confirm, have ADHD and a shit memory

I fidget and have incredible memory.

That is an interesting hypothesis!!!

No wonder I have such a good memory

What are the implications in full length.

Very interesting. Can anyone refer me to other papers or studies about these mechanisms? Thanks.

Thanks, /r/science. Now I can abandon my carefully regimented daily diet because I must finish and defend this dissertation within the next few months.

Resisting the temptation to consume large amounts of alcohol everyday is damaging to you. You heard it here first folks!!!

So this could happen?

Does this also explain why we remember useless but fun crap easier then important but boring stuff?
