This reminds me of the elephants building the circus tent in Dumbo.

Anybody else just notice the words to that song? and the workers are all blacked out.... I guess it was made in the 30's but I never noticed that when I was a kid.

well, keep in mind Dumbo also had a murder of crows, one of them was named Jim Crow... not exactly the most P.C. movie...

Yes they taught him to 'fly' with some funny smoke, but he actually did fly and they were very supportive. Almost like being mean to someone based on what they were wasn't a good thing, and that anyone can teach you good things. IDK.

Dumbo also got totally drunk and had a psychedelic pink-elephant dream sequence

Which scared the fuck out of him and he ended up in a tree. I don't think he was going to repeat that event again any time soon. Though he really didn't understand why he was seeing pink-elephants. What kind of bubbly was that anyway!?

Although I don' t know/remember if Dumbo consciously knew that what he was ingesting was alcohol and that it would make him drunk - so it's unclear if he willfully chose to drink alcohol. Maybe it was more like some poor kid being given a spiked drink without his knowledge.

Why pink elephants? I think it's a popular image of what drunk people see when they're intoxicated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeing_pink_elephants

He definitely thought what he was drinking was some water, to cure his hiccups after he was crying, I think. :( The rat friend thought it was water, too, I think. But the clowns' liquor had spilled into it.

It's crazy for me to think that the person or people responsible for that animation did it in 1941, and there will likely be people viewing it when it's 100 years old. Do you think they were thinking, "I need to do this really well, because my great-great grandkids will judge me on this work!"? I think probably not. I think they probably were like, "Man, I need to finish drawing this foot so I can light another cigarette that I can smoke right here at my drafting table before I slap that secretary's ass."

Yeah, I think it was more like that.

It was a completely different time. It doesn't make it OK, but it does make it understandable.

In our current climate, terrorists are almost universally portrayed as Arab. Some day this will be looked at the exact same way.

Also animated by scabs and strike breakers because Disney thought paying his artists a fair wage was ridiculous.

My kid has been watching that movie lately. Racism, bullying, alcohol consumption, severe punishments....it has a little something for everyone.

My toddler loves Dumbo (it has elephants and trains, which are her two major interests right now). I always feel guilty letting her watch it. I'm not even sure if there IS a good moral to the story.

It shows that being mean to someone because they're different isn't nice. You might have to dig for it, but it does have a moral.

Moral was always don't be dicks to people because they're different. And as racist as the crows seem to today's standards, they do choose to be Dumbo's friend by the end of their conversation. Oh, and those uppity elephants got their comeuppance for thinking based on appearance Dumbo was worthy of lower respect.

i remember watching as a 4 year old... and it DID teach me to stay 'good' rather than those people doing those bad things... it makes the bad things "unappealing". at least we hope..

You don't actually see any normal looking humans at all in the movie. The workers are the only ones in plain sight, & the only other time you see humans is when they are behind a curtain or in clown makeup

It's totally possible it's a race/class thing, but it also may be a creative decision. Distance is put on people so we focus on the animal characters, & the separation between the two groups. Just a guess.

That's not true. What about the ringmaster and the dumbass kids?

They sure made building the circus tent look menacing. The elephants looked badass though.

I understand skipping 50 pages but I don't understand why you would read the rest of it having done that.

the first 50 pages are a little middle earth and hobbit encylopedia where tolkien explains the stuff that hobbits smoke, what hobbits are and that hobbit holes aren't compareable with real ordinary holes.

It's supposed to be. It was written as a mythic pre-history.

Well the hammer guy doesn't really have to trust anyone in that situation.

He has to trust that the other guy won't fuck him up if he makes a mistake. That guy has karate chops down.

Or the guy with the hammer is just really crap at hitting that other guy's hands.

It also seems that the hand slapping is mostly pointless..

The hand slapping applies moisture. Watch him take his hand away and put it in water (silver bowl).

Why not just use a spray-bottle? Legitimate question

It's probably just for the entertainment :D

Ok, bit of a mochi geek. It's sticky rice that's been soaked over night and then steamed. It is then put in a mortar like this and beaten for 30 minutes. Thing is that it has to be a constant process to make the best mochi. Also, the rice has to be folded over itself by hand, so a spray bottle would just slow it down. Usually it goes at about 1/4 the speed or so. So, in essence, since it has to be flipped by hand, it's just easier to dip your hand in the water. Also, the Japanese are just very traditional haha.

Remind me never to play slaps with a mochi maker.

Unlike cheap Mexican bamboo

China and Mexico. Two countries not in this gif.

That would take 10 times longer.

Well, it would also use 12-13 fewer people so, even if it were true that rope would be 10X slower, it would still be more efficient in terms of hours.

Not if the only thing that matters is the amount of hours it takes until completion, when labor is cheap enough you can just throw more people at any problem.

They could however gain efficiency by using bigger loads if they used ropes and pulleys and set up 2-3 hoists.

Just get thirteen ropes.

They are carrying several bricks (or whatever it is) at the same time, which means the whole load is going to get up there fast. And no need to tie anything. That's actually pretty smart, on a big site like this, and they don't get much exhausted from it, they just pass it quickly. They probably have that many workers on the construction site anyway, so it makes sense to do it as fast as you can.

[–]forgot_user_and_pas 3ポイント4ポイント  (9子コメント)

But what if the establishment is being fined thousands for every hour the job isn't done?

Then they should get 13 extra ropes and have 13 guys hauling things up at once. I'd bet a single guy could raise a rope nearly as fast as that entire team with even the most rudimentary structure to help. (which would be waaay easier to build than that rube-goldbergian scaffold).

At least that. The people saying that these guys are stupid have obviously never tried pulling hundreds of heavy things up several storys with a fuggin rope. So really I don't think anybodys stupid, just unaware of the realitys of hard manual labor.

Gifv of the best part

Mmm, now I want Mochi.

Ah, so it was like an optical illusion. The hammer and the guy's hands were working on different parts of the dough.

not exactly... they do kind of overlap slightly and there is definitely the possibility that the barehanded guy could get his hands hurt.

Furthermore watching after watching the gif a few times it becomes very easy to see that their movements are in fact syncopated, so his hands could be working the same part of the dough if he wanted.

Every four hand-slaps the barehanded guy rotates his hand directly under the mallet so that he can grab the other side and flip it over. That seems to me to be the most likely time of a collision.

Granted, I don't know how much it would really hurt if someone hit your hand with a mallet and you were cushioned by ice cream.

and you were cushioned by ice cream.

Ice cream? No, I don't think they are making the ice cream; they are making the rice dough wrapper that goes around the ice cream (or bean paste). That stuff is reasonably firm when in bulk. I don't believe it would provide much cushioning at all.

Are they hammering a pin into asphalt? Unless that is meant to be permanent, how do they get it OUT?

Probably cut it off, drive it down, then patch the asphalt. I also found some techniques using a lever to pull it up. Heavy machinery like a bucket loader might be able to pull it out with a chain too.

Edit - Add video and remove cutting off as an option. I guess I'd take the lazy route.

Only one guy knows how to actually swing a hammer.

Sorry, but as a former gandy on the railroad, you don't slide your hand when you drive spikes. Your hands stay in place while you windmill and drive the spike down. The only people who slide their hands are new guys who are swinging in front of themselves because they can't hit the spike without seeing the maul and the spike head at the same time. That's what tires you out while learning how to drive spikes. And windmilling with several people became against safety rules because too many people got hurt doing it.

There is a trick to every trade. Thanks. I would have slid my hand. It is proper it an ax, right? Sometimes?

The two people on the left actually have near perfect form.

-Source- I swung a hammer for 12+ hours a day in the oil field. Letting the motion of the hammer carry itself around saves energy, time, and your rotator cuff.

actually... yeah

the second guy from the right is the guy

the others are mot moving their grip on the hammer handles like they should be

I thought it was the guy on the left. In the video, it looks like he's the only one making progress when he hits.

His strikes seem to be the strongest of the four, but he would get tired easily if he does not move his hand along the handle, which is what the second guy from the right does.

Interestingly enough, that guy made the least progress of everyone there.

If you're ever swinging a hammer or a splitting maul, don't waste the energy by swinging from behind you. Just pick it up and swing downward from the highest point that the head will reach. It's a waste of energy to swing up to that point and then swing downward.

Because going in order would make them more likely to collide. Staggered order is a safer order.

1-2-4-3-1-2-4-3-1-2-4-3-1-2-4-3..... FUCK.

My brain thinks the cycle begins halfway into the rotation.

So the rotation that makes more sense to me is 2-4-3-1-2-4-3-1. This way it's actually every other swing instead of the 4th swing being before the 3rd and ruining the 1-2-3-4 flow.

I thought that at first and it made my eye twitch, but upon closer inspection;

The guy who swings last has quite clearly got his instruction from the beginning. It wasn't that he was just 'slow to have his go'. If you watch him, he specifically waits to join the flow at the 'right' time.

Now, why would this be decided?

I think it might have something to do with 'getting the most space possible for your swing' during the rotation. If you're swinging half a second behind the guy directly next to you, your shoulders and hammers are going to be very close to one another - in both position in the circle and position in the rotation.

If you're hitting the stake directly after the guy opposite you, then you have much more room for your body/shoulders to do their thing - as the guys next to your are at completely different stages of their swings.

Now watch it again with that in mind, and you can see how much more room the guy to swing 4th has, compared to if he was taking his turn directly after the guy to his left and directly before the guy on his right.

Phew.
