Rockstar did address this back in 2011. They said it wasn't viable technically or business-wise.

So they release every other game on PC, but RDR is just way too tough for them? I smell bullshit.

The working conditions at Rockstar San Diego during RDR were famously terrible. It even prompted a 'Rockstar Wives' open letter from spouses to Rockstar begging for better working conditions for their partners. Apparently the game barely made it out the door and the code was in such a state to not be portable to PC. The fact that it was one of the best games of last gen is a miracle.

From a former employee:

"So I rolled with the punches for as long as I could, but it became really difficult to ignore how ridiculous things were getting, not just for me but for everyone. And I came to realise that I'd somehow been sucked into thinking that it was all somehow OK. That is was OK for me to be working 12 hours a day," he wrote, "six days a week without compensation.

"That is was OK to be lied to and manipulated in the workplace. That it was OK to be spoken to by management as if you were child. That it was OK if management screamed at and abused people while their peers looked on (I wasn't the only one). And that is was OK I was letting real-life pass me by as a result of all this.

I think thats also how Diablo 2 was made. Terrible life killing crunch. We apreciate the end product/art but dont know the other side.

However, I think a big difference with Diablo 2 was it was a much smaller team who wanted to be there by choice. Interesting article I found that explains they goofed around a lot at work as well. But when deadlines had to be met they had to buckle down.

Edit Said article.

Aside from some business politics with blizzard while the Diablo 2 team was still essentially a contracted group, Diablo 2 was made by a bunch of people who truly loved working on their videogame.

I think I remember this development horror story. It sounds like bad project management caused RDR not to be able to be released on PC.

Can't be as bad as LA Noire.

[–]NemWan 13ポイント14ポイント  (0子コメント)

For all we know, Rockstar shifting attention to finishing L.A. Noire contributed to the lack of RDR PC. They pretty much merge into one studio during the last year of crunch on every game.

Yeah but RDR was famously held together by duct tape and prayers.

From what I remembered the game was mostly written using PS3 short code to help it run on it's limited power and was still very buggy. I don't have the source but I recall one of the developers saying it would have been an expensive nightmare to basically re-write the whole game again to make it run on PC.

Well it was on Xbox as well.

You say without any knowledge of how the game was developed nor the logistics of how to port it.

Nothing gets passed you random redditor. It's definitely bullshit.

[–]Prathik 6ポイント7ポイント  (2子コメント)

Lol the development of RDR was hell, it was a huge mess so there is a legit reasoning and background to why they can't port it over to PC. Oh wait they're trying to shaft PC gamers on purpose because they hate them, yup that sounds correct.

I love how you get -70 votes for saying it's bullshit and the guy below gets +150 votes for showing why it actually is bullshit.

Opening a hidden comment and choosing to downvote it past -10 is so petty, indirect and unnessesary.

[–]Illidan1943 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

The source code is a mess and there's nobody working in Rockstar that worked on it

Rewriting the game from 0 is probably easier than porting the original code to PC and that's something that not even Rockstar would do because they have no guaranties that this is worth it

[–]Jcpmax -2ポイント-1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Whats bullshit? That they didn't think releasing it on PC was worth the time and effort business wise? Having games on PC is not a right and if the game company finds that it is not worth then effort then tough luck for pc players.

It's all a big conspiracy to make less money.
