Any questions?

Am I supposed to be convinced of something here?

Make sure you hit your airbag switch on time in the event of an accident, or things could go bad for your watermelons.

[–]Industrious_Villain 23ポイント24ポイント  (0子コメント)

Careful, that switch goes off for literally no reason.

Yes. Any other question?

Yes actually, so do I die before or after my head turns into a watermelon?

This would prolly be a campiagn for wearing seatbelts especially while the airbag is turned on. If you don't you hit the dashboard too early and the airbag does more harm then good.

Most new cars turn off the airbag if the seatbelt isn't buckled. I could be wrong.

That seems... counter intuitive.

Well I would guess that an airbag is ineffective if the person isn't buckled?

I'm pretty sure it has some kinds of sensor on the seat to tell if someone is on it.

On honda the seat belt buckles for both from seats have switched in them to show if the seat belt is buckled. If it is not, the airbag for that seat doesn't deploy. The passenger front seat has a weight sensor in it and a sensor in the seat back. These are used to tell the size of the occupant and wether or not they are leaning into the side airbag deployment area. Also the drivers seat has a switch that will turn the airbag off if you are too close to the steering wheel.

I was getting the impression that it was a car company trying to assert that they were superior to some other car companies for having reliable timing on their airbags

IIRC it is a Honda commercial trying to tell you to buy genuine Honda parts. Which you should, because China makes every goddam thing now, and it's usually fucking awful.

I think this is the correct answer.

yes that timing your airbag 7/100ths of a second later will make your crash 10000x more awesome!

But only if properly filmed in ultra slow motion from multiple angles and with a condescending question at the end.

"See, this is why airbags!"

I read it in a german accent.

Any qvesssstions?

Any questions?

Yes. Where can I purchase one of these watermelon atomizers? The air quality in my apartment has insufficiently low watermelon parts per million.

You already own at least two I bet.

I hope mine are late. If my head explodes that means I don't have to pay my $1000 deductible

I hope mine are late so I don't have to deal with all this shit on the road.

You'll turn into some shit on the road.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Yeah I have a question, is my airbag built by the lowest bidder like my ignition switch was?

Yes. Yes it was.

I remember reading about this. Any links?

TLDR; Takata made a bunch of faulty airbags, for just about every car made since just about forever. Instead of an airbag, people were getting face-fulls of metal shards. Which is just about the opposite of what an airbag should do.

Consumer reports has a nice little timeline and breakdown.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/10/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-takata-air-bag-recall/index.htm

And the NHTSA has an affected vehicles list.
http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/takatalist.html

Pro: my car isn't on there.

Con: car has no airbags.

Neat, so basically instead of an airbag, they installed a claymore at chest level, ensuring a quick and painless* death.

*Death not painless

Ah.... thank you for that. My truck is on there. And there's another recall on it. So... guess I'll take care of that soon.

Holy shit, this is huge! Why didn't I hear of this until now...

What happens if it is 7 hundredths of a second early?

It will probably start deflating. There are giant holes in the back to prevent the bag exploding.

[–]Lost_my_other_pswrd 14ポイント15ポイント  (8子コメント)

Could you imagine. Right before your head smashes your steering wheel a giant balloon pops in your face.

Still better than you smashing your head into a steering wheel before being punched back into the seat by a giant balloon exploding outwards.

I have that strange feeling that the punch back wont be a problem.

There are tons of videos (how much does a video weigh?) Of people sitting on airbags when they go off. Check them out, report back with any questions.

I was trying to point out, that if you smash your head against the steering wheel after a collision strong enough to make the airbag go off, and the airbag is early or late, the punch back would not be a problem, because you might be a little dead.

I guess I can expect lots of "how to get an instant enema" videos? :P

[–]Skulder [

Ohhhh.. Yeah. I agree, then. The punch back won't be a problem.

re: the videos, no, people ragdoll all over the place. The explosion is quite powerful, and people are thrown into the air. It looks positively spine-shattering.

And to stop your neck from breaking?

Im actually curious about this.

Why do scientists always use watermelons to represent human heads? I'd gladly donate my head to science after I'm gone if I know it would be involved in a kickass experiment like this. I'd like the gif of my exploding head to be in the e-invitation to my funeral.

I'd hope your funeral isn't an open casket afterwards.

His open casket will just use a watermelon in the stead of his head. Maybe they'll do a fancy face carving on the skin, or maybe a fancy carving where it looks like a red head in a watermelon helmet, or the lazy route of taping his picture onto the watermelon.

Either way, serving sliced watermelon with watermelon juice at the afterparty is just a given.

Why do funeral homes always use watermelons to represent human heads? I'd gladly donate my head to a funeral home after I'm gone if I know it would be involved in a kickass funeral like that. I'd like the picture of my re-attached head to be in the e-invitation to my science experiments

Or everyone could pick off chunks of his face as they visit the casket.

Just a watermelon with a smiley face on it with a sharpie.

And near the end of the service, the watermelon is detonated without warning.

A scientist wouldn't; a director or artist would.

It's about the same weight and makes a satisfying red explosion after detonation

But it isn't... A watermelon weighs 2x what a human head does and isn't anywhere close to being as strong.

Because smacking a head around doesn't really show the real internal damage. a Watermelon is much more explanatory of the fact that shit will go off.

My friend's dad is a neurosurgeon. He told me once that your head can withstand about the same impact as a cantaloupe. This was a convincing argument for wearing a bike helmet.

I was hoping this would be here. The part where he looks like he's going to cry is fucking killing me.

[–]Agonze 3

Yeah

Where can i buy some super legut watermelons

That's a bit unnecessarily dramatic.

Directed by Michael Bay.

What about my airbag on drugs?

Note the white powder that dusts the floor around the airbag as it deploys. That's to prevent it from sticking to itself over time in heat exposure, and is normal and expected. For this reason, don't freak out and say "omg my car is smoking" if you have a minor accident that triggers the airbag sensor and causes one to deploy. It will fill the car with a light haze but it's not smoke and it's completely normal. (You can smell that it's not smoke as well). Source: 14 years as a firefighter/medic and see people freak out over this almost daily.

The real problem of airbags is the force with which they inflate.

In the US, they are required to save an average weight unbelted man, and as a result, they need to provide a much more substantial cushion in a much narrower band of time.

European standards assume the rider is belted, which allows the airbag to function as secondary protection, and the bags inflate with much less force over a longer period of time.

Yeah. Apparently whiplash and broken necks are real risks with American airbags. Or at least so I heard.

Can we see it 6 hundredths of a second late?

I want to see the watermelon shot through the roof.

Yes, can I see it 6, 5, and 4 hundredths of a second late? I want to see the bag hit the watermelon mid-air.

[–]Enxer 2

so I should be serious about the air bag recall and get my honda's airbag fixed?

j/k my appointment for its replacement is Wednesday.

Or else your head will explode instantly.

Are You Going To Eat That?

That made my watermelon hurt just watching it.

...is this supposed to make me afraid of my cars airbags, because if that was the intent it worked.

Yes, is the moon made of cheese? Why do ducks quack? Why aren't marshmallows a food group? Will Goku even charge the spirit bomb? Can cats forgive? Do trees sleep? Why do I only have an itchy bum in public?

Or if you sit too close to the steering wheel!

Mind = blown

What if we just have already and permanently inflated air bags... Problem solved. No more dead watermelons

How many watermelons did you use for the gif?

Late or early? Because the first one was early, the second was late.

The first one was the right timing, you want to hit it after inflation, that was the point of the clip.

I understand that, I was saying is the bag late or early? Since the bag deployed before the watermelon hit it and In the second on the bad deployed when the watermelon hit it.

You want it deployed before you hit, the first one was on time.

That's what I mean, it says it's deployed late (which is actually earlier)

Edit: oh shit, I've been misreading it the whole time my bad

The watermelon cracked hitting the ground before the airbag deployed. i don't get the point of this.

Your head might not literally explode, but what do you think will happen if it hits the steering wheel before the airbag deploys?

And a strong core. Hit a car going 50 a few years ago. I stiffened and just held myself upright. Walked out with a scratch on one of my knuckles.

Do you really think that made much of a difference? Sitting in a cushioned seat with an airbag deploying and seatbelt on makes the actual impact forces on you pretty low in a collision like that. A serious collision would be head-on, so a combined impact velocity of perhaps 100mph or greater.

Also if I may ask how did this accident happen?

You do know that you don't actually combine the mph of a head on collision, right? The energy of two cars hitting each other going 60 mph is the same as one car hitting a brick wall at 60 mph. Anyway, yeah, it made a difference. Whiplash, striking my head on the window(which I've done, concussions suck), breaking various bones in my hand/arms/torso, etc. It definitely helps to be able to hold yourself upright and resisting the forces of the crash to minimize moving

What? That's not true at all. The combined kinetic energy of two cars each going 60mph and colliding head-on is equal to mv2 = mass of one car times (120mph)2 assuming the cars are of equal mass. Or each car has a kinetic energy equal to half of that. They are each going 120mph with respect to each other. The energy per car is therefore 4 times the energy of one car hitting a wall at 60mph. Don't believe me, try hitting a wall in a gokart or something at 20mph then trying hitting another head-on when you're both going 20mph with respect to the ground.
