At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, I know exactly what he's talking about when he says "homosexual accent." It's somewhat lispy and effeminate and seems to be relatively common among parts of the homosexual, male community. The guy is just venting about his backwards-ass town. Cut him some slack.

EDIT: To clarify to the ones who don't understand my comment. I'm not saying that all male gays sound like this, but enough of them do to sufficiently call it a "homosexual accent." Again, not ALL sound like this, only some. Otherwise, why do you think OP would be getting shit from random people because of the way he sounds? The "accent" is relatively common.

[–]SLOW_PHALLUS_SLAPPER 159ポイント160ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah, this guy doesn't seem half as bad as most of the people on this sub.

I'm still not sure why "Slightly homosexual accent" is the thing OP latched onto with the title...

It's so stupid that it would even be considered non-PC to bring it up. A group of gay men are even making a documentary about the subject. Trailer.

Also, I have heard it said that some men deliberately speak that way to give the cue that they are gay, and are possibly DTF. There's one guy I know that said it turned him on to hear someone talk like that since it meant that man was also into dudes.

I've always wondered to what degree it was a conscious decision. Do you think everyone who has the accent uses it intentionally? Maybe just at the beginning and it becomes second nature? Do some not even realize they do it? If someone has that accent naturally from birth, are they more likely to be gay? What about the guys who use that accent when they were still in the closet? Does it have anything to do with genetics? Maybe the "gay gene" (if it even exists) is linked to the lisp gene?

I have so many questions! It's just so unusual and interesting for an accent to form around a community that isn't related to location, but to a characteristic.

I have it. I am not sure I am gay but, it is not intentional at all. Idk how I have it, but I do. And in my head, my voice does not have it.

Come on, Reddit! This man needs answers!

I'm glad someone has my back!

[–]El_Generico_Orphan 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

I believe its just genetic, I'm gay and I'm slightly feminine sounding but I definitely don't put it on. I think if anything the gay accent just proves being gay is biological and not a choice and it's just one of the characteristic that makes gay people.. gay.

But how can you be sure you're not just subconsciously trying to fit into the culture? I've never met a 6 year old with it and I worked at a summer camp for 6 years. When did you start to have the accent? Not that that's an easy question to answer unfortunately.

Edit: not to mention no matter what it's not "just genetic" because the first post I responded to said his friend did it on purpose to pick up guys, and I have at least 3 gay friends who have no lisp at all.

Last edit: I'm not saying it's not genetic for you or that you haven't had it your whole life, but it really only raises more questions for me!

[–]El_Generico_Orphan 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Well your friend putting it on is just a one off case of someone putting it on, I've never met anyone who put the voice on. I can remember back as early as I can (4y/o) my parents and their friends knew I was gay then because I did sound it and a few of my friends did who later grew up to be gay as well. I also have gay friends who don't have the voice. I do think how you grow up, your interests and the environment you are in will affect it also subconsciously, as I have known a couple gay people who where in the closest because their parents didn't like gays so they kept it secret which I think played into them trying to be less obvious and 1 of them who eventually came out after school noticeably had a gay voice after he did and he lost a few friends because they accused him of putting it on and being fake but I didn't think of it like that which goes into me thinking it could be a trait which gay people just tend to have because he wasn't a fake person and now he's out he doesn't have to hide anything from anyone so he speaks how it comes out naturally. Some people will disagree and still think it's just put on thing but I don't.

Also I've only met 1 gay person with a lisp, In fact I've only met 1 person with a lisp to begin with. So I have no idea about this lisp some people talk about. But tone pitch and voice I get. Feel free to ask away:)

You dropped a couple of these . and these , haha.

But seriously thanks for the input, that's actually a good point that the people without it may have lost it because of covering it up earlier in life. My friends without it were people who denied it and were ashamed of who they were for a long time.

P.s. It's just kind of called the gay lisp even though it isn't really a lisp and more of an accent, I'm not really sure why. At least that's how I've always heard it described.

I've read that the "gay accent" disappears if somebody who uses it is put under general anesthesia. Not just because people don't talk when they're out, I've been told I'm a huge blabbermouth the times I've come out of surgery and I don't remember saying anything at all. Just that the affectation is lost for whatever reason.

So I don't think it has much at all to do with genetics. As others have said, it's probably has to do with the thought that "oh, this is how gay men talk. I identify as a gay man, so I'll start talking that way too"

TL;DR: Anecdotal evidence of things that I have no firsthand experience with and I'm too tired to look up sources from peer reviewed journals

That's fascinating. I would love to read an article about that if you should track that down!

But just using educated guesses without any evidence, that's how I think it works too, cultural not genetic.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'd say theyre trying to sound feminine, but most women don't even speak like that. It's an exaggerated feminine way of speaking. But then I've heard people who weren't even out the closet also speak like that. They think no one's know they're gay, but bro. Have you heard yourself talk? Lol. It's not a secret to anyone. But now I'm interested. Why is that such a common way of talking when it comes to that characteristic?

That's incredibly interesting. I would love to watch it when it is released.

You're not wrong, it's definitely a thing. People who deny it are either ignorant to it existing or are lying to themselves. It's not bad or anything to sound like that or believe it exists, it just is what it is.

The guy is just venting about his backwards-ass town.

In a way which is pretentious and makes him sound like a 15-year-old.

If you've never lived in a backwards ass shit hole of a town, I envy you. I can totally relate to what this guy is saying. Small populations can cause some really anti-everything, redneck groupthink. Probably all the inbreeding. It sucks to have grown up somewhere like that.

Just step into any political subreddit and you can see the groupthink in action. Everyone is capable of it.

Small Town groupthink is more than just political ideology. It's blind patriotism to a very small ingroup and it's often EXTREMELY and dangerously xenophobic. Check out the documentary called Shenandoah for a really in depth example. A bunch of high school football players in a very small white, but poorish town brutally beat a Mexican national to death for sport and the town's collective response was "well if he had stayed in mexico this wouldn't have happened" as opposed to "holy shit, what kind of monsters have we raised that they don't value human life?".

That's the difference between political ideology groupthink on reddit and real life damage that small, inbred towns cause as a result. that's how Matthew Shepard died. Small Town gay panic. It's all very Lord of the Flies. My hometown is similarly a white trashy shit hole so I can relate to OP's rant.

Oh it's definitely way worse in the real world, I just mean anyone can be subject to it. I'm currently in a medium sized town and I also sympathize with OP. It's an intellectual shit hole and seems to suffer from brain drain. And the surrounding area is peppered with smaller towns that make mine look like New York.

Thanks for the documentary recommendation btw.

Indeed, he sounds pretentious. But he must be furious of all that bigotry.

If you dropped me off in Georgia I'd have the same complaints

Calling it an "effeminate" voice is probably a much better term to use than "homosexual accent" though.

Its distinctly different than the way women talk, though. Effeminate would be soft and high pitched. Women don't have their own inflections, unless you count question talking, but the lisp in particular is not a female trait. "Homosexual accent" at least identifies it for the unique cultural phenomenon that it is.

Right. The way homosexuals talk isn't how a woman talks. It's more exaggerated. Enough to for real have its own name of a way of talking. Since people are sensitive I guess you can call it "exaggerated feminine"?

Though I think it has existed since the 80s or 90s, and not something that just happened.

Good point. That's more sensitive.

Effeminate could just mean high-pitched or soft, though. It's a specific type of effeminate that immediately brings to mind the type of accent he's talking about. Losing specificity so that you can be politically correct is really stupid.

It's not about political correctness. It's just about correctness. Saying it's a "homosexual accent" is not specific. Also if someone meant a high pitched voice they would just say that.

[–]Fermit 1

Saying it's a homosexual accent is specific, though. If you said that somebody had a "homosexual accent" to random strangers, a large amount of people would know exactly what you were talking about. Slight lisp, relatively high-pitched. It's the stereotypical voice that's associated with gay people. IMO it's more specific than calling a voice "effeminate", which could mean any combination of several feminine vocal qualities.

I don't think the very smart had much to do with the accent but talking about it IQ and linguistic prowess.

I think pretty much everyone knows exactly what he's talking about when he says "homosexual accent". The problem is that he calls it a fucking homosexual accent.

I'm gay. I have a noticeable gay lisp. Even I would look at this kid like a fucking moron for calling it that.

Wow dude that is SO homophobic. You should turn yourself in to the police and check your privilege IMMEDIATELY!

That reads like sarcasm so I don't know why you're being downvoted.

edit: I guess that solves that nonissue.

Just because it's a joke doesn't mean people will like it.

True, but people on this subreddit aren't usually offended enough by something like that to downvote.

Maybe because it's a completely unoriginal joke?

Even when that happens it usually just sits at 1-0 karma. but enough people were annoyed that it went lower so I found it surprising.

shrug

I think of reddit as a place where everything's made up and the points don't matter.

Ever since people started with that dumb little '/s' tag, nobody can read between the lines anymore.

Yea because they totally could before.

Maybe I just have rose tinted glasses, but I didn't think the problem was anywhere near bad enough to require a big "JUST KIDDING!" at the end of everything.

It was that way though. Sarcasm/irony is pretty hard to recognize in written form.

Am I just attracted to authors that use a lot of sarcasm? When people read books, do they just take everything as it's written on the page?

Only if the person writing it is doing a bad job.

Yeah, he's talking about a real thing in crude terms. OP sucks bananas.

I think this guy is more confined to his small towns less modern ways than he understands. Nobody would call that an accent, especially not someone who probably holds their vocabulary as something above the people around them.

I think it's called Valley girl

Arguably, not all Spaniards have a Spanish accent, not all Russians have a Russian accent, etc it's really not any different.

Having a gay-sounding accent doesn't mean you pronounce things better, though. In fact, having an accent kinda means you pronounce things worse, in a way.

[–]TELL_ME_TO_CALM_DOWN 2ポイント3ポイント  (3子コメント)

literally everyone has an accent

it's just that you don't notice other people with your own accent

Not really. Received pronunciation isn't an accent.

[–]TELL_ME_TO_CALM_DOWN 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

no, received pronunciation is just the standard English accent.

there are places other than England and places where no one even speaks English.

Yeah, but received pronunciation is speaking English without an accent since it's standard.
