TIL "homosexual" is also a dialect.

Here's a fun story for you:

A friend of mine from college is very proud of his celtic heritage. He is also, incidentally, gay. He got a tattoo on his chest: a gaelic phrase that roughly translates to, "what is unique is what is beautiful," or something like that. He showed it to me one day outside of a classroom and a girl from my class, Special K, saw it.

Special K: Oooooooh, what language is that in?

Friend: Gaelic

Special K: Oh, uh, I didn't know that, like, uh, your people had their own language.

Me: Do you mean... the Irish?

No, she meant the gays. She heard the word 'gaelic' for the first time and decided that because my friend is gay that this "Gay-Lick" language must be the secret homosexual tongue, from which the homosexual dialect originates.

I can see why you call her Special K.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_BODYPART_ 38ポイント39ポイント  (4子コメント)

Is it because she likes the cereal?

or because she likes ketamine?

I think she liked it a little too much... And maybe it had some adverse effects... Just maybe....

I actually had to take a second after I first saw that because all I could picture was the cereal. Apparently iamnotverysmart.

That actually is a pretty cool tattoo idea. If only I was gay and Irish haha.

This is terrible but also made my day.

Okay, fair play. But Special K and her ideas about her classmate (who's gay) can, in a way, make everyone's day stay bright as a sunshine ray.

Have you already told this one?

Because I am almost sure this isn't the first time I read such a story.

Maybe? It's definitely not my first Special K story.

Sorry but the language is just called "Irish". I have never heard an Irish person ever refer to it as "Gaelic". Source: am Irish.

In much of the english speaking world, though, it is referred to as 'Gaelic'. It seems to be more of a regional thing almost, I don't know if there's really a "correct" term.

The correct term is Irish or Gaeilge if you want to say it in Irish. It is a Gaelic language, but to call it Gaelic wouldn't really be proper.

Interesting. I just know so many people that say it otherwise, its sort of "become" correct, if that makes sense. Or, not "correct", I guess, just sort of a popular usage. I will keep what you said in mind for the future though! :)

Can confirm. Best friend is Irish, only ever refers to it as that.

Just by the way the language is just 'Irish', not Gaelic. Gaelic is not a language. The Irish word for the language is Gaeilge, pronounced Gwailgeh or Galegeh, which is probably where the confusion comes from.

But we've heard many English speakers call it "Gaelic." This argument is equivalent to debating if it's called Germany, Alemania, or Deutschland or telling some the language is Español and to call it Spanish is ridiculous.

[–]emperor_of_prydain 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

In wales we call it, 'yr almaen' translating to 'the alemania' so thats the correct one and everyone else is wrong.

[–]Tundur 3

Gaelic is most definitely a language. Source: Hebrides

At the same time, Polari exists.

But then again, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic are two distinct (but related) languages.

There are noticeable speech patterns among gay communities (and even trans communities). I'll have to find the papers for it but it is an interesting look into how communities show inclusiveness and solidarity via language.

E: /u/metalingual has linked to some papers below.

In addition:

Kulick, D. (1999). Transgender and Language. GLQ: A Journal of Gay and Lesbian Studies, 5(4), 605-622.

Van Herk, G. (2014). Work that –s!: Drag queens, gender, identity, and traditional Newfoundland English. Journal of Sociolinguistics, 18(5), 634-657.

I was witnessed an argument about this when someone interrupted and said that he had led a gay men's chorus for years and there were definitely characteristic habits he would have to correct again and again.

Any particulars? Sounds like interesting observations.

It was over two decades ago, so I don't remember much. He was the theater teacher at my school. It was the first time I heard the word "sibilance" which I gathered is the technical term for lisping. It was more a lesson about how stereotypes are a way to guess about someone and be protected whether you're right or wrong than it was a lesson in diction.

Sibilance is a hissing sound, particularly referring to singers holding their Ss, especially out of sync. But I can see, with a stereotypical gay speech pattern, how that could definitely be applied.

Two decides is a long time to remember a conversation. I don't blame you forgetting.

It's a sociolect, basically. A way of talking that can be found in different social circles or groups. Everyone has it to some degree, no matter what kind of circle you hang out with, most people just don't notice.

There's a documentary by David Thorpe that explores this, entitled Do I Sound Gay? Haven't watched more than the trailer, but someone hypothesized, "maybe you listened more to women growing up than men". Made sense to me

I have a slight "gay accent" - my whole internet life since getting a mic for Counter Strike 1.6 at 14 (I'm 24 now), I've occasionally had people ask if I'm gay just from my voice. It used to happen a lot more, but it's still at least a couple times a year. It also happens in real life, but less often than online. I think people still think or assume it, but just bring it up less often.

I definitely think "maybe you listened more to women growing up than men" is part of the reason. I was mostly raised by my mom and my sisters because my dad's work had him out of the country a lot, and I've always theorized that to be why.

Edit: I feel I should clarify I am straight.

So, I am gay, and I grew up around mostly women (a few of them honosexual) and very few men (all straight). Where I am from and the time I grew up there were no gay men. But still, I developed the dreaded Gay Lisp.

People frequently suggest it has to do with growing up around women but that makes no sense to me because the gay lisp sounds nothing like women. In fact, I have yet to meet a female that can properly imitate the gay lisp without sounding utterly retarded.

I admit that there are similarities between Valley Girl speech and Lavender Linguistics, but the differences are even more striking and I am not satisfied with the "raised by women" hypothesis.

[–]Pao_Did_NothingWrong 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I listened to his NPR interview in the car with my life. When Terry Gross asked him to rate how gay his voice sounded from 1-10, I turned toward my wife and asked her the same thing.

Her reaponse: "4. But like 7 if you're drunk and 9 if you're high."

I said that sounded about right.

There's definitely some shifting towards socially feminine manners of speech. Of course, many times they aren't strictly female, but do resemble them. Of course, this isn't to say every gay community uses the same features or has the same motivations. I'll give that doc a gander, thank you.

Excuse me, Captain? I speak homosexual.

Germans, speaking English, sometimes have a certain lisp that sounds 'homosexual'. You know, that Hollywood gay affectation?

Boris Becker is a good example of the accent.

I mean there is a homosexual accent. That much the guy got right.

I think he's saying the people in his town have the IQ of bananas.

That's pretty clear, but Reddit is filled with banana-IQ people too.

There are some actual bananas here as well.

TBF I think the IQ of an average banana would make a good standard. Then when people boast about their IQs, they could use a banana for scale.

I've heard about banana for scale, but I didn't realize they meant the IQ scale.

[–]Walking_Pneumonia 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Hey, I'll have you know my IQ is at least as high as a grapefruit.

IQ is a percentage, of your intelligence against the average intelligence of your demographic (ideally). Technically because all bananas have exactly the same amount of intelligence, their IQs are all 100.

Oh so what, they're all the same to you? I'm gonna go get some of my banana friends and we'll kick your ass.

Now being able to tell the difference between "your" and "you're"? Those are some serious bragging points.

    I'm from the deep south.

In some circles, people who speak correct english without a southern accent are said to be "talking gay", or "talking like a fag."

edit: Yes, I do sometimes feel like Joe from Idiocracy.

    Reminds me of this:

Jerry: Y'know I hear that all the time.

    Elaine: Hear what?

Jerry: That I'm gay. People think I'm gay.

Elaine: Yeah, you know people ask me that about you, too.

Jerry: Yeah, 'cuz I'm single, I'm thin and I'm neat.

Elaine: And you get along well with women.

George: I guess that leaves me in the clear...

From central-Georgia, I've never heard anybody called "gay" or "a fag" for talking properly or without an accent. Maybe I just don't work with or around assholes.

Edit: Or in those circles you mentioned.

From Alabama, i've also never heard that happen, and i've had some pretty retarded friends.

As someone from California working with people from the south, if I had a nickle for every time one of them refereed to my accent as gay or faggy I'd be able to buy the south.

Just tell them they sound like a dumb fuck

I like to use it against them. We were walking to the store one day and this redneck was in his front yard with no shirt on, burning trash.

We walked over. I put on my thickest southern draw and told him he might want to do that in the back yard because the gays like to do that in the front yard as a signal for other gays to stop and have sex in the bushes. When we came back, he was putting the fire out with a hose.

So like, what is that, 23 times or something?

26, inflation has been pretty bad lately

I'm from the Midwest and have a horrible time reading people from the West Coast, especially Californians. It seems like the gender stereotypes are slightly pushed towards the effeminate in California, especially for men. I've also noticed that it seems that women in the Portland and Seattle areas are slightly less stereotypically feminine than out east and are often assumed to be lesbians even if they aren't.

It's actually pretty interesting. I used to think that American culture was pretty homogenous, but even gender norms differ pretty greatly from region to region.

I once lived in the upper peninsula and correct English and/or nice clothes could get a person labeled as a fag. Haven't been there in years and hope things have changed.

I have a lovable, but dumb, cousin who accuses me of using 'those fancy two dollar words' if I say anything with more than two consonants. The price can vary, depending on the word. My sister once got a five dollar word for using non-homogeneous when joking around about our super mixed family.

I love the up. Its the older blue collar generation that's the racist homophobic type. the younger generation is very progressive. As is usual.

I also live in the deep south. nobody has ever given a fuck about how I talk and I do not have an accent at all.

So the kid is venting about being bullied for sounding gay in his southern town by implying that he is smarter than a banana and we're making fun of him for being full of himself? He didn't claim to be Einstein folks.

People need an excuse to make fun of others in order make themselves feel better

Such is the problem with the whole front page system - if you there isnt anything good for the day its either reposts or shitty posts that make it to the top

To be fair it was pretty arrogant, but I can see where he's coming from.

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, I know exactly what he's talking about when he says "homosexual accent." It's somewhat lispy and effeminate and seems to be relatively common among parts of the homosexual, male community. The guy is just venting about his backwards-ass town. Cut him some slack.

EDIT: To clarify to the ones who don't understand my comment. I'm not saying that all male gays sound like this, but enough of them do to sufficiently call it a "homosexual accent." Again, not ALL sound like this, only some. Otherwise, why do you think OP would be getting shit from random people because of the way he sounds? The "accent" is relatively common.

    [–]SLOW_PHALLUS_SLAPPER 157ポイント158ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah, this guy doesn't seem half as bad as most of the people on this sub.

It's so stupid that it would even be considered non-PC to bring it up. A group of gay men are even making a documentary about the subject. Trailer.

Also, I have heard it said that some men deliberately speak that way to give the cue that they are gay, and are possibly DTF. There's one guy I know that said it turned him on to hear someone talk like that since it meant that man was also into dudes.

I've always wondered to what degree it was a conscious decision. Do you think everyone who has the accent uses it intentionally? Maybe just at the beginning and it becomes second nature? Do some not even realize they do it? If someone has that accent naturally from birth, are they more likely to be gay? What about the guys who use that accent when they were still in the closet? Does it have anything to do with genetics? Maybe the "gay gene" (if it even exists) is linked to the lisp gene?

I have so many questions! It's just so unusual and interesting for an accent to form around a community that isn't related to location, but to a characteristic.

I have it. I am not sure I am gay but, it is not intentional at all. Idk how I have it, but I do. And in my head, my voice does not have it.

Come on, Reddit! This man needs answers!

You're not wrong, it's definitely a thing. People who deny it are either ignorant to it existing or are lying to themselves. It's not bad or anything to sound like that or believe it exists, it just is what it is.

If you've never lived in a backwards ass shit hole of a town, I envy you. I can totally relate to what this guy is saying. Small populations can cause some really anti-everything, redneck groupthink. Probably all the inbreeding. It sucks to have grown up somewhere like that.

Indeed, he sounds pretentious. But he must be furious of all that bigotry.

If you dropped me off in Georgia I'd have the same complaints

Calling it an "effeminate" voice is probably a much better term to use than "homosexual accent" though.

Its distinctly different than the way women talk, though. Effeminate would be soft and high pitched. Women don't have their own inflections, unless you count question talking, but the lisp in particular is not a female trait. "Homosexual accent" at least identifies it for the unique cultural phenomenon that it is.

Right. The way homosexuals talk isn't how a woman talks. It's more exaggerated. Enough to for real have its own name of a way of talking. Since people are sensitive I guess you can call it "exaggerated feminine"?

    Good point. That's more sensitive.

I don't think the very smart had much to do with the accent but talking about it IQ and linguistic prowess.

I think pretty much everyone knows exactly what he's talking about when he says "homosexual accent". The problem is that he calls it a fucking homosexual accent.

I'm gay. I have a noticeable gay lisp. Even I would look at this kid like a fucking moron for calling it that.

Just because it's a joke doesn't mean people will like it.

It was that way though. Sarcasm/irony is pretty hard to recognize in written form.

Why come you don't have a tattoo

What's wrong with this? He's not calling himself smart, but calling people who say ignorant things to him dumb, in an indirect way. Doesn't belong here imo.

Asking someone if they aren't from an area is ignorant?

Yes. So is completely disregarding the subtext.

Would it be context or subtext? Is there a difference?

Implying that someone "isn't from around" here because they sound gay -- also implying that there aren't gay people "around here" -- pretty ignorant IMO.

It doesn't really say they implied he wasn't from around there because he sounded gay. He just said that he gets asked that question a lot then describes his own accent as gay, then makes it one of many traits that makes him superior to the locals.

I get that he comes off as a bit aloof, but there are still a lot of places in the US that are extremely homophobic. It's just a coping/defense mechanism. I'm gay, and even though I grew up in the city and had a very different experience than this person, I can definitely understand. I know a lot of people who grew up in small towns and didn't have it as easy as I did.

Honestly, I don't even think this guy is that bad at all. He isn't calling himself extremely smart, he's just saying that the majority of the people around him view even the slightest bit of intelligence or ambition as something strange or not right.

And as for people thinking saying "homosexual accent" is either stupid or offensive, I disagree. If the idea is for him to effectively communicate a point with language, then I think he's done well. I understood straight away what he was referring to.

It's obvious that there seems to be a common way of speaking almost unique to a lot of gay men, and it's stupid just to pretend it doesn't exist in order to not run the risk of people thinking you're saying ALL gay men speak that way.

Now i'm not saying this guy isn't a douche, or trying to humble brag, but by the same token I could see someone being honestly frustrated by this happening to them. If you read the post looking for somebody who fits the bill of a verysmart, you will find one, with a different title you would probably find somebody else.

So wait, you folks disagree that there's a stereotypical gay accent ?

I can kind of sympathize with this guy.

He's pretty much saying he doesn't want to be a part of some small town full of bigots. I actually don't think this fits this subreddit aside from the IQ mention, which isn't even in the style normally seen here.

Pretty sure he's annoyed with his bigoted town, not bragging about how smart he is

    [–]PM_PICS_OF_ME_NAKED 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

    Read that as pretend lisp.

    I’m pretty sure that’s just a joke.

    [–]PM_ME_YOURBROKENHART 9ポイント10ポイント  (10子コメント)

I can't really imagine a homosexual accent. Mercury and Elton John comes to mind, but they had british accent...

Try an extreme lisp, he might be referring to that.

This is something that has always bugged me. When people do their "gay voice" trying to be funny, they do a lisp for the "s" sound but that's not accurate. It's not a lisp at all, it's a very hard "s" sound. The same sound you would make when doing the goody "ssssssnake" sound. The gay people who do have that overly obvious effeminate speech pattern don't have a lisp, they over-enunciate the s sound.

Straight bros try to make fun be like "thtop it you thilly goothe" and I just glare.

I don't care if you wanna make fun of my being gay, but at least do it right.

Accent isn't the right word, but he's referring to this:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_lisp

It's especially common in portrayals of gay men in sitcoms and stuff. I'm sure you've heard it before.

Or a southern accent, like Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote or David Sedaris.

Have you really never heard it? Certainly not all gay guys have it (most of the ones I know just speak normally) but its pretty prevalent in the gay community. I even know people who picked it up after coming out of the closet and embracing "gay culture".

Come to think of it, I also know a straight guy (i think he's straight) who speaks like that. Being gay doesn't give you the accent, it's just a culture or identity thing I guess. People like to embrace what makes them different.

I think for a good number of people, this is absolutely not what happens, myself included. We don't really know for sure yet what causes the "gay lisp" but a lot of men do not embrace it and actively work to hide it.

try to say "no homo" over and over with a cock in your mouth - slight homosexual accent

Goals and dreams that exceed the city's limits!

I guess he really isn't round from these parts after all, fellas.

In what part of the world is 'homosexual' located? That would help us pin down what the accent might sound like.

Small parts of California, Texas, and New York, primarily.

It's true, when I came out as gay my IQ went up a whole standard deviation.

To hear it a thousand times a week would imply he's going to different places as people would remember a guy resembling an asshole, So not from round those places.

don't know why he'd be bragging about a gay lisp when even some gays don't like that shit.

That slight homosexual is not very smart. Since he didn't continue his statement his ellipsis should have had a period after it.

I mean, he's not really tooting his own horn, he said he's higher than a banana... I'd hardly say thats bragging about his intelligence...

    Hey, Nutbush isn't a swear

So his accent causes him to articulate. He might actually outsmart a banana, GENIUS!

It's too bad he probably didn't mean Polari.

    We all laugh and yet...

Obviously he has a British accent

This is my new favorite sub. Combine r/trashy and r/iamverysmart... Limitless possibilities.
