Deceiving AND a complete waste of plastic. Impressive.

At least now you know that the actual product is more expensive to produce than the plastic.

But you also know the company thinks it’s customers are gullible enough to warrant the cost of extra plastic & higher shipping fees.

Or that customers rather pay same price for less product than more price for same product.

But you also know the company thinks it’s knows it's customers are gullible enough

That might not be true (probably is tho) because if they give you half the amount of product then you will run out of gel twice as fast and will need to buy more.

I never thought of it that way! I'm going to start buying all of the wasteful packaging I can find because I know it's good quality!

It's not a complete waste of plastic, it's serving a purpose. The purpose being to deceive. That's some fine marketing right there.

I once wrote to a company telling them that they were being wasteful and deceiving for doing shit like this and their reply was "well, we put the product weight on the front..." Which was not a satisfactory answer for making the package 30% larger than it needed to be.

What did you expect them to say? "Shit, you caught us. I guess we'll put it in appropriately sized packaging from now on."

"thank you for your email random consumer. We will call back the 500,000 products we have already shipped, and pay for primetime television advertisements to warn the public about this oversight in our product. Furthermore we will transfer all hair gel from the defective containers in to smaller, more sparingly designed, hair gel jars, and then donate the defective jars to orphanages and schools where they can be used as material for childrens art projects. We would also like to make you our honorary employee of the year. Please reply with an address where you would like to receive your lifetime supply of free hair-gel at your convenience."

Thank you. That's exactly what I wanted. I would also like $1,000,000 for my pain and suffering

I mean...I would say that's probably the best possible outcome.

Yeah I should never try to make a difference in the world, good call.

Edit: ok, too hostile, sorry! What is a more appropriate thing for a consumer to do though? I obviously don't expect one note to fix it, but enough letters will let them know we care and notice.

Well you should.

He's just saying writing a letter isn't really trying.

[–]SEND_ME_YOUR_STORIES 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I mean if enough people email they might look into it.

I did a similar thing and didn't hear back. Seattle's Best was selling 10 K-cups in the exact same sized boxes that every other brand uses for 12. Yes it says 10 in small print on the box but it's still a sleazy move. I won't buy that brand again.

[–]Tutule 0

Well to be fair that was the same thing I though. Net mass doesn't lie.

Not to mention shipping and fuel use.

They're taking notes from their competitor, Axe, whose foundation was cheap alcohol spray only used by people who can't afford oil-based cologne. In the 90's, Teen Spirit was in the same space, but Nirvana basically killed the alcohol spray and deodorant. Unfortunately, Axe survived, thrived, and now, after lagging in the 90's and early 2000's, Old Spice is going after the bearded crowd in a similar manner as Axe, who seems to be going after the horny teen.

But, that's just my take on it since I've seen Old Spice evolve since the 80's.

And much, much longer. Until ~10 years ago, in the healthcare industry you could tell which doctors had office or clinic hours that day by how the waiting room smelled. Old Spice meant Old Men, so the urologists were working. It's been interesting to watch them retool and redirect. I'm impressed.

Yep. I associated Old Spice with my dad, as did my wife. I still remember the corny boxes they came in from the 70's to make them look fancy and upper class to the working class.

Then there was that aftershave I used as a teen that belonged to my dad, and it stung like hell because I'd probably cut like ten zits while shaving my five whiskers.

Yup. I've always used Old Spice just because it's what my dad used. All my friends said it's old people stuff, but I didn't know/care enough to learn what's hip or in fashion. Full circle later and I'm cool and probably smell just like Terry Crews.

I'm 20 and shave with barbasol

Me too! Thanks, Dad! $2 a can, by the Hammer of Grabthar, what a savings.

my dad uses gillete. I just got a travel bottle of barbasol from my grandma once(no idea why) and it actually gave a better shave than the gillette cream I was using. being cheap as hell was just a bonus

Interestingly enough, when it was first developed it was made for women. It didn't sell well, so they redirected it towards men and it caught on.

So i didnt know teen spirit was deodorant. So i went to Wikipedia to check. And not only was it selling well, but nirvana gave them a huge boost in sales, it didn't kill the brand

Keep your facts out of here!

IIRC the people that create these deceiving packages are called 'cardboard engineers' or something similar.

Just like the game with the same name.

Kidding. When the fuck is Ricochet 2?

released with half life 3, of course.

It's hard to see that strategy failing, with an intellect like that behind it.

Considering how popular old spice is... I would say they're fine. If dove didn't smell so damn good I would be using it again.

I use exclusively womens deodorant and bathing products. Dove soap and baby powder scented deodorant is WAY better than fuckin Irish Spring or Old Spice. For some reason all the male scented hygiene products have a shitty cologne smell or like a fake musky smell as to say "This is what men smell like". All the really fresh and clean smelling scents like baby powder are usually geared towards women for some reason. Also for some reason, womens hygiene products are higher quality and have added moisturizing and exfoliating shit in it where as all the male soaps leave your skin with the almost gritty residue feeling on your skin.

Exactly, when my step mom buys body wash it always has the word mens on it and im like i just want unsented dove for sensitive skin please.

Dude have you heard of Dove Men+Care? It's pretty awesome.

I'm the opposite. I use old spice wolfthorn because it smells like candy and actually keeps me dry. I also use a men's razor on my legs. The blades are better quality and the handle actually has some heft to it. Men's products seem to be cheaper and of better quality than comparable women's stuff.

Possible explanation:

There are several other hair gel products sold by Old Spice that actually use the full space of that container size. Although they sell this particular product in smaller amounts, they chose to package it in the same size container to improve stackability and visual consistency with those other products.

why not uhm... sell a larger amount then?

A larger amount would cost more, and they wanted to have a lower price point. Also, the people responsible for setting quantities and prices are likely different than the people responsible for packaging and distribution.

"Why does my hair gel have an oil filter in it?"

Apparently I wasn't the only one to see a Purolator Classic

You're not a FRAM Man?

HELL NO. A Fram oil filter looks like a weak little girl inside compared to a top line purolater, a K&N, or Royal Purple filter.

This is the kind of thing that needs to get blown up on a company's twitter page.

Yeah, but where are we going to find dynamite on a Sunday?

Deceiving shit like this is done constantly and you probably don't notice it. I'm actually surprised they made it so obvious in this example.

There are dozens of techniques, but if you're curious on one big one, you know those 'New and improved!' or 'New formula!' and so on you sometimes see? That's just to distract you from realizing they dropped 15g of product, kept it at the same price (Or sometimes even raised it a bit), for at the most maybe adding a new cheap fragrance to it, or changing the binder or amount of some ingredients, or even just changing the color and package. Always be suspicious about any well established product that suddenly has something 'new' about it. They can always repeat this same scheme in a few years, and either raise the price or reduce the amount of product you'll get, or if they think they can get away with it, both.

Sometimes they'll just change the package, put some kind of contest on it to attract consumers, and lower the amount of product in it or raise the price, without even bothering with the whole 'new and improved' scheme. Cereal companies occasionally do this.

The worst is when they just remove a few grams of product, and keep the package and price the same size. They could easily turn this around years from now when the product is cheaper, and say '10% more!' or something like that, when they just increased the amount to still less than it originally was. Then they can lower the amount again with very little issue, protest, or anyone really even noticing. This gives them a surprising amount of freedom to adjust the profits at will, allowing them to try and maximize their profits while still manipulating the consumer into thinking they're getting a deal. Snack companies do this dance regularly.

I've only met a handful that have noticed this going on, and they often work in the industry itself or want to. Though recently at least, marketplace, a TV show in Canada, did a whole episode on these deceptive practices.

yea! i have 1 follower though, so...i'll see what i can do.

Is it MySpace Tom?

I only have one follower too...it's Tom Petty, which makes me feel special though.

[–]PanukkaWhen people have overly long flairs for no good reason at all...

Old Spice's advertising is so awesome that people wouldn't give a shit.

You'll never go wrong with "Dapper Dan".

Almost every {as in "not all of them"![as in "it's not necessary that you mention all brands you know that doesn't do this" (or do it anyways! I don't even care, I use DAX!)]} hair products of this kind. I once bought hair wax with a container like this one but it was closed on the bottom and had a label that covered the sides completely. I ran out of it really fast an noticed the wax was actually stored in a little half sphere. I removed the label and noticed it was this little half sphere floating in a mostly hollow container.

American crew doesn't do this.

AC Fiber is fucking great

Yup. Using American Crew Fibre right now, damn I look good.

Just recently bought American Crew soft lotion hold for men and it's definitely the best hair product I've bought

[–]onepennytoomanyMy Flair Is Not A Lie

BUY AMERICAN CREW™

You all should try not shampooing your hair for a couple of weeks. I shower and vigorously scrub/rinse my hair every day, but only use shampoo about once a month when I get a haircut.

Natural hair grease is as good as the store bought stuff.

I bet your hair looks gross and shiny.

[–]tan_is_sin_ovr_cos 3ポイント4ポイント  (2子コメント)

Your hair is gross for the first 2 days after using no shampoo, but then it regulates oil output and works way better

But how will I make my mane smell of fresh coconut?

[–]tan_is_sin_ovr_cos 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I guess I really don't see the point of wanting every part of your body to smell like tropical fruit. I much prefer my natural scent, plus a light (keyword: light) spray of a subtle cologne. Plus non scented deodorant, obviously, so I don't stank.

AC Fiber master race, checking in.

AC Fiber is really great but the hold isn't nearly as strong as I would like.

Texture is perfect but hold is lacking. Imperial's texture is almost like a Gel but the hold is great. I need to combine the 2 for the best pomade possible.

The two containers I have are pretty traditional no wasted space cylinders. one is Paul Mitchell... forgot what the other is. I'm still trying to find one that doesn't smell weird.

Suavecito smells pretty good, so does Layrite.

[–]Paixo 2

Suavecito is the best!

Layrite smells petty good. Vanilla-ish

Try bumble & bumble sumo wax

I usually use that or the yellow Paul Mitchell one, they both work really well.

Ever hear of the dollar shave club? You have to buy razors from them as well, but their hair products are all pretty great. I've been using their hair fiber for some time, and I haven't even looked at any others. Fairly priced as well.

I heard of them, their facebook ads pop up about every 3 hours on my wall.

Dove is usually pretty good

Aveda is expensive but their products are legit. I don't like paying $26 for their texturizing creme but I'll be damned if it not only is an awesome product but smells great too.

[as in "not all of them"!(as in "it's not necessary that you all mention brands that doesn't do this")]

mathematician?

Almost every . . . hair products of this kind.

That sentence [which I read btw (and I understand you have all these brackets and parentheses and shit)] not sense.

Originally it was "Almost every hair products of this kind.". Before everyone felt the necessity of pointing out how not all the products did this as if I had said "Every product.". It was meant to be a reply to OP's title: "This hair gel".

Try Layrite. A container of it will last you at least 6 months.

Layrite is awesome. Been using it for a year and never looked back to American crew

Almost every hair products of this kind.

I think you forgot a word or two.

I, too, was very confused.

I spent way too long trying to read some sort of message on the bottom before realising what was going on.

It is a releif to know that I was not alone in doing that.

I'm on mobile and flipped my phone upside down for a solid 10 seconds before I gave up and read through the comments...

Since it says wax, is this not pretty solid anyway and even a small amount would last pretty long. This is my experience from using hair wax. Although the deception is still unnecessary

even a small amount would last pretty long

That's why the package is the way it is. You don't need a huge quantity, but if the package were small it would be easy to steal and easy to miss on the shelf.

but if the package were small it would be easy to steal and easy to miss on the shelf.

It's more about shelf presence than how easy it is to steal.

...there are smaller packages of hair product out there...saying it's harder to steal is a super silly argument

Not if those smaller ones get stolen more often.

I dunno, one of the better ones I have seen. Also makes it more noticeable on the shelf, bigger label and shit.

Can confirm bought Murray's wax in 94, use it weekly and it's still have enough for what I assume is the rest of my life.

Ugh I bought this fucking tub of wax because it costed as much as other brands, but there was like twice the wax. Shittiest wax I've ever used. Always go for quality over quantity when it comes to wax.

I pay 17 freaking dollars for my tiny tub of hair wax. It lasts about 3-4 month though, so I really don't find it expensive in the end.

My wax is a little bit cheaper. What brand you use?

American crew. 17 from my barber, cheaper at target.

I hate it when I get a light bulb when I buy my hair gel.

That's not even gel. It's wax. That shit will last years probably.

It's the push up bra of hair gel.

The bottle identifies that there's only 1.7 oz in there, even though the store's label does not. Calls it 2.5. At least you could've figured this out before opening it.

This actually doesn't make me that mad. It states the amount you get by mass. It says weight and then give you the unit grams, which is mildly infuriating by itself. The rest is just packaging. It's like if something came in a box that is bigger than the product. You don't have to buy it.

I feel like this borders on false advertising

Proctor & Gamble (the parent company) has already been sued for doing this with Olay products. http://consumerist.com/2015/07/08/procter-gamble-settles-with-california-over-allegedly-misleading-moisturizer-boxes/

“There was never any intention to misrepresent the size of our products"

How else do you explain this packaging, then?

...

Your honor, I rest my case.

more tactile for the consumer.

sure it's bullshit but it's not difficult to defend at all.

Shelf presence, stacks better with other, similar sized products, there's a million reasons.

The label on the product says 1.7oz, I think (hard to tell). The label on the shelf says 2.5oz. The stuff next to it is 2.64oz (I have one at home I just looked at). I was going to defend Old Spice until I saw the difference between label & listing on the shelf. Target needs to fix their price tag and Old Spice is definitely being deceptive here, even if the container shape is simply for ease of display and shipment. Sure the fiber wax stuff probably costs more to make than the other, but at $7 retail for 1.7oz I am sure their markup is still insane

Definitely says 50g which is 1.76oz.

It's annoying enough when they do things like make the bottoms concave or use subtle shaping to give the appearance of more...but this is flat out "we don't give a fuck you fell for it and we got our money" packaging.

Borders. Not boarders.

Right you are. English is a "fun" language.

That's really disappointing. I love old spice products

I dont have anything to prove it until I cut one open, but I know Axe does something similar with their body spray. I feel like its cone shaped on the inside because it feels full and then all of a sudden its just empty.

They still tell you how much is in there.

Am i the only one who uses the super useful price per ounce? (or liter or you brits). That thing is a god send. Do i but the big bottle or the small one? well the big bottle is .23 an oz and the small one is .24 and it expires soon. well the small one will work. Also for toilet paper this is by far the best method of choosing which one. Look for your desired ply, mine being 2-ply then look for the cheapest per sq-foot.

And I´m trying to read the numbers to find the joke...

I'm on idiot... I was looking at the picture on the right trying to figure out what you meant by the letters and numbers on the bottom.....

I don't understand the problem. It provides the volume of 2.5oz on the label.

Former package designer here.

It is probably designed that way to prevent the product from tipping over easily.

Sold by weight.

Yes, but do you look at a jar and know exactly how much 1.7 oz of gel weighs; Or do you look at it and expect that it would be mostly full of product if you're in a hurry in a busy store?

I check all products weights and quantity when I food shop, packaging is deceptive and quite often you will find a price per unit/kg printed somewhere for easier comparison

I do find searching got the weight or volume on everything can be a pain. I appreciate manufacturers who don't make it deliberately difficult to assess product amount.

Luckily in Europe in most places they have the weight on the shelf price label.

There is also a price per gram,Kg,ml,L depending the the size of the item

I use lots of Old Spice stuff. This just makes me sad.

There are a ton of female haircare products that do this. It's not that mindblowing

mildly infuriating is an understatement. I feel like this is false advertising at its best.

Devils advocate here: this packaging helps the gel stay upright easier, and the packaging is semi-transparent, so I don't think it's as deceptive as everyone is making it out to be.

I have the answer to this. it is designed like this so each can product can stack on top of each other neatly. this is designed so you would buy more of the products to stack them up if you will. you can see the top of the product that it has holes as well, for similar products to fit in there.

You might as well just get the American Crew Fiber that's two feet away from it.

Mildly infuriating: dumbasses like OP who refer to every hair product as "gel." There is gel, wax, fiber paste, pomade, hairspray, hair tonic, mousse, and I'm sure many more I'm either forgetting or unfamiliar with.

I spent way too long trying to read the serial number like it was supposed to be significant.

My Pantene Wax container looks exactly like that. I didn't mind because I bought it on sale online based on it's weight.

Axe hair gel is the same way, they at least fill the bottom side of the jar to not make it look so.

My grandfather used to call this a 'soul' (this was 25 years ago) He hated deceptive packaging, false advertising etc too:p

Is there a subreddit of items like this that try to deceive customers?

I just bought some of that today actually but didn't notice this....

I would've covered the bottom with an opaque, yet thin so as to not use too much material, surface. That way people wouldn't be able to feel or see the gap between the outer packaging and the actual content container.

More of a fuss should be made about this kind of thing. Generally companies stop doing seedy shit if they realize they're getting a ton of bad press.
