Lol I remember the first time I went to a BAPS temple. I asked why there wasn't a female swaminarayan and they proceeded to tell me about the female body and how it was incapable of containing divinity because it was impure. Fuck those guys.

Edit: Yes, this was in the United States. The temple is extremely beautiful, clean, and organized but no amount of pretty can conceal what people really think.

and they proceeded to tell me about the female body and how it was incapable of containing divinity because it was impure.

Even BAPS temples in India dont say that.

I've only seen them hand girls "wraps" that were tourists and had REALLY short Shorts. (Mostly people wanting to see the giant hand carved temple)

Kinda like visiting the old churches when you travel Europe. It is something to see and be amazed by.

edit forgot )

That's terrible. Was this in the USA?

From what I've gathered, BAPS is just a social medium for tons of people. No one really gives a shit about their preachings or beliefs. Still, this is pathetic considering its 2015

Wait, what? Why is the female body impure?

I think they browsed too much redpill.

What is BAPS? I've heard of some mandirs with that name here in Seattle.

It is a sect of hinduism Bochasanwasi Akshar Pursotham Sanstha or something.

It is a Swaminaryan temple. I like to compare it to the Catholic Church in monetary net worth, they have their own 747 and billions in Capital.

edit Capital not capitol

It's a "chain" of "Hindu" temples, I put Hindu in quotes because they advertise themselves as a Hindu temple to attract Hindus and then once you are in they teach the children that they aren't Hindus (they as in the temple isn't a Hindu temple) but something else (what else I have yet to know)

Namaste:

Respectfully, the Swaminarayan movement is part of Hinduism, but it is of a very specific guru lineage and theology that might put it at odds with modern "mainstream" Hinduism.

It is sad that this specific temple and those specific priest espouse a theology that is so regressive, but we should not brand them as "not part of our dharma". You might have large theological disagreement with them, and should feel free to embrace, ignore, or even speak out against them. Throughout our history, we have allowed for many different branches of Hinduism to flourish, and critique and criticize each other.

Ah ok. I don't know much about Hinduism so I didn't know about what the organization does or its legitimacy . All I know is that they have a temple around here.

Yeah they have many temples around the world and recently built a giant one in NJ

I hate baps smh. I'm always dragged there with family and last time I was there this guy working inside the temple pissed me off so bad.

Apparently I had to cover my head (me, of all the women in the room who didn't cover their heads?) and when I walked away ignoring him, he proceeded to follow me and say "ma'am, cover your head, this is not a fashion show" like what the hell? I've never been asked to cover my head EVER in a temple. I took the stupid dupatta from him to shut him up. I honestly felt like throwing it and telling him to fuck off but I remembered I was in the stupid temple.

And from everything else I've observed about that temple, it's so brainwashing.

complain to the security, there are crazy assholes there that think they run the place. its at all of them. People who volunteer so much, think they run the place.

Having some friends that go to BAPS, I have always noticed how religiously they practice their faith. Granted, I participate in organizations like Swadhya parivaar and HSS. But, I have never encountered anyone as nearly religious as these guys. There is nothing wrong with being religious or practicing your own faith. But, I am somewhat bothered by how they tried to get me to come to their meetings. I have also noticed how they treat the founder swaminariyan like a god. Like I understand respecting gurus. But, a god? I feel like they think he is a reincarnation of krishna/vishnu.

[–]Vishuddha_94 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's a part of Swaminarayan Hinduism. They believe that Swaminarayan is an incarnation of Krishna. I was brought up in a Swaminarayan Hindu family. My family's not part of BAPS though.

Their thinking isn't regressive. Regressive means "returning to a former or less developed state." Throughout history, Hinduism in India was generally never like this at all. BAPS misogynistic practices are clearly the influence of colonialism and western religion.

Look up the history of Purdah. Secluding women and having them veiled is a relatively recent introduction to parts of India as a result of foreign occupation. South India was never influenced by the Moghuls in that regard, South Indian women never cover their heads or seclude themselves from men.

Indians themselves don't understand Hinduism. Ive been to the BAPS Temples, although im not a Swaminarayan. The saints of the BAPS Sanstha all follow a celibate life i.e no money, no family, no ego, no marriage. They give up their life to worship God. Its funny how Indians will talk bad about Hinduism, yet wouldn't even think about walking into a mosque and talking bad about Muhammed. Hence in BAPS Temples, women and men side on either sides of each other as they believe when you go to the Temple, you need to concentrate your mind on God and not the opposite sex. Those who say they spend a lot to build temples which can go to the poor, have a search on 'BAPS Charities'. They've been building schools, hospitals, villages in India with their donations and commit to helping the poor. People should ask themselves why do we spend so much money on cars and holidays etc when that can be donated too? Its just a matter of understanding really
