They've been doing this since Apple's beginning. It won't stop. Apple was actually the company to popularize the now standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. New connectors might not be convenient but they're the future.

what a load of bullshit.

If you want to give credit to a company for "popularizing the 3.5mm headphone jack" that award should go to Sony with the Walkman.

In what way was apple the company that popularized the 3.5 headphone jack?

Not the parent commenter.

I know they were popular before the iPhone (Walkman, cassette tapes, etc...) but few phones had them. A lot of phones used proprietary connectors. Most of them used the charging port which wasn't even standard usb back then.

I don't know if it's actually true but I imagine iPods did have a significant effect, just like they basically standardized headphones with the button/mic on the cord.

What? Every cassette tape Walkman had one. Every discman. Minidisc. There is no way the iPod made them popular

Not with a button to go forward / back like the iPod. There were similar ones but literally every headphone that is released now has the exact same controls that the iPods came out with. Go look at any headphones. They will have a volume up and Volume down button, and a central button that you press to control music (once for pause, twice for forward, thrice for back). That's what I'm talking about. Apple made that a standard.

they're the future

Why?

Edit: Not why in general, but why this connector is the future. Of course new plugs will be added for new tech, but usually they bring something new for users. This just brings a tiny space increase for Apple. SIM cards still take up a lot more space and can be replaced entirely with software.

becuase the technology behind transferring information/electricity changes all the time. Do you expect that when people charge/sync their hoverboards or all-purpose computer-implants in 100 years will be using USB? Eg When apple changed from 30-pin to lightning it fucked a lot of people over but they gave the standard ~10 years on the market, which considering the technological advances during that time was pretty generous, and now people are better off with lightning cables; short term loss for long term gain

I wasn't questioning why connectors change. I agree, it's good we dumped LPT and PS/2 and all that cruft. I was questioning why this particular connector is "the future". I don't see a benefit to the user.

I didn't take it from the OP comment that they were commenting about the new head phone jack, but all connectors in general, which is what I thought you were questioning. I agree that this new jack isn't anything special, I think Bluetooth or something like Bluetooth will make cables in this context redundant once a high enough bandwidth is achieved

I don't think anyone is questioning new connectors in general. USB versus LPT, Serial and PS/2.

If this is Apple trying to free up space inside the phone, they need to tackle the bigger whale: SIM cards.

Yeah, some positive signs that this may happen soon, they released an iPad with a generic SIM that could have a carriers details loaded onto it. Would love the day when switching carriers is as easy as downloading an app

sim cards are tiny enough as it is. I don't think they need to get any smaller to be honest

SIM cards can be replaced by software. This would save the space taken up by SIM card and its tray, as well as the pins needed inside the phone to read the cards. That's a lot more space and less impact on users than changing the 3.5 mm jack.

CDMA iPhones?

They still have a SIM card tray in case you travel outside of the US/China, because everyone else uses GSM.

Can you imagine if we never got the 3.5 mm headphone jack? Our phones would be bricks. Can you imagine if we didn't get the Lightning cable? We'd still be fumbling around with our cables trying to get them in the right direction. Can you imagine if we never got MagSafe? Our laptops would still get ripped off the table every time we trip on our cords. Obviously it would just be better to simply get rid of all cables and go wireless but the world isn't quite there yet.

You know that 2.5mm headphone jacks were a thing, right? And a bunch of phones used them.

Lightning and MagSafe solved a problem, they weren't just a size reduction of the original connector. I don't get why this particular stubby 3.5 mm headphone jack is a solution to a problem other than size.

The issue with changing the 3.5 mm jack is that Apple doesn't make even a sliver of the headphones out there. Will they be able to convince manufacturers to make special headphones for iPhones, or will we be stuck carrying around adapters?

Changing to MagSafe and Lightning was easier because you got a cable which you kept. Most people don't seem to be sticking with their EarPods.

The difference between the switch the 30 pin cable and lightning is that it only caused people to change a few Apple proprietary cables and not hundreds of dollars worth in headphones. This switch would be a major annoyance.

Yeah, like the way I have to spend hundreds of dollars for different headphones to use on my phone (1/8" jack) and mixer (1/4" jack). Wish there was some way to use the same headphones with different jack sizes.

Bluetooth damn it, just use bluetooth.
