A user will be notified via PM from the subreddit that they have been muted.
is that really necessary? seems like it might be more effective to just let them shout into the void.
yeah, like shadowbanning, thats universally loved
i was under the impression it was the application of shadowbanning that was loathed moreso than its actual function. it would make sense to me if someone's being a turd and you want them to shut up, telling them you're banning them so they can immediately make a new account and keep being a turd isn't a very good idea.

this is what happens when the system is broken
in that specific case, it does suck that it was the result of an error. but if he had been a spammer/troll/harassing people/one of the things that would have justified a ban, then it worked - he spent 10 months using an account that couldn't cause problems for everyone else, rather than getting a ban notice and saying "welp, time to start a new account and resume business as usual!"
thats the thing, it was designed for spammers but is used for EVERYONE ELSE
Shadowbanning does nothing to spammers anymore. They've learned how it works. They regularly check for it and switch accounts if and when shadowbanned.
Shadowbanning has turned into a tool to silence dissent and nothing more.
silence dissent
that sounds overly dramatic.
I do not intend rhetorical flourish. Every word in my comment was used per its primary connotation.
Haha. No.
While shadowbanning is a poor tool for dealing with non-spammers, and I do hope reddit develops a better one, you are deluding yourself if you think shadowbanning does nothing to stop spammers (though it's hardly perfect). Most spammers are pretty effectively dealt with using AutoMod; there are quite a few, though, that have learned to just make a new account for each new spammy post (...which tends to eventually get the domain itself banned).

Can you clarify what you mean? Not notify them at all and just silently discard their messages?

yep, exactly! that way they don't know they're being ignored, and when they stop getting replies they'll eventually get bored and give up.

We're deliberately trying to make our new tools transparent to the user.
Ideally, it would be great if moderator actions were transparent to the community as a whole.
This would cause witch hunts.
There are already witch hunts
It's the job of the admins to deal with those
Transparency removes corruptions and reduces baseless witchhunts
A similar message board with public logs has only had one large "event" which has amounted to nothing more than typical internet drama the links of which you see in the metareddits on a daily basis.
Listen, I'm not disagreeing with you fully.
I couldn't care less in reality. If you want right now; with the other mods' permission, I'd make a bot for all the subs that I mod to grab the modlog json, and post it to a github.io page.
My only argument is that at a minimum, the usernames have to be taken out. There are various, sometimes complicated reasons as to why actions are taken. The ability for reddittors with their absolute idiocy (yes, I just called every reddittor, including myself, and idiot) to be able to not take these actions just at face value is little to none.
You'd have mass witchhunts regardless. Worse than your "similar message board". Baseless or not they should not happen, and the admins would not be able to control the amount of whichhunts.
My point: make the username of the mod anonymous, and this public mod log only available if you have more than one mod; and I say have all the "transparency" you want.

I would fully respect and give immense praise to any and all moderators choosing to increasing transparency and serve as role models.

That's a real concern. IMO a better way to solve that would be to have a subreddit specific account take actions that moderators discuss in mod mail.

Then people would switch to just using that account out of fear, and my removing username bit takes effect anyway.
Removing usernames is the best way I can see. Why does it matter which mod does the action? You know it is one of those "filthy bastards". This both removes witchhunt on a mod that is just trying to do their job, and lets you see what you want to see.
Side note: theoretically, I don't think making the modlog public would be too hard of a change for reddit. Nor would adding a preference on the /about/edit page. Nor would hiding the username server side via some JQuery.

Not really. Modding a subreddit with clear rules isn't rocket science. Reasons only become complicated when moderators make things complicated by saying one thing and doing something else. There won't be "mass" witch hunts unless mods treat their communities poorly.
If a moderator needs to hide behind anonymity then they're either a crappy mod, they have crappy rules, or they moderate a crappy subreddit.
What you just said is false on numerous levels. Why? Because every single person's definition of any word in their mind, is subjective. Spam, is subjective. Self promotion, is subjective. Rudeness, is subjective. Comedy, is subjective.
That's what I mean by complicated reasons. And there would be witchunts even if you are the best mod on earth. I know some mods, and they are some of the best ones I've ever seen. And they consistently get death threats and more through pms and reports.

People are already mad about shadowbans. A modmail shadowban probably won't help that too much.
But isn't it just better to notify them? I don't see a negative in that.
like i've said, my concern is that notifying them (a)just makes them madder, (b)lets them know to use a different non-silenced account, and (c)lets them know exactly when they can resume bugging us on their regular account. i'm concerned about this mainly because of how often banning someone seems to get that kind of blowback - seems like one out of every 10 bans gets someone jumping on an alt to keep arguing, or starting threads like "SINCE I WAS BANNED, FUCK YOU MODS." they're always reported, but it just seems like telling those people they've been banned only further antagonizes them.
Eh, true, I've found on other communities I've moderated people usually don't freak out after getting muted and we notify them, but I guess reddit attracts plenty of idiots.
Because giving them a PM invites them to harass you again in 72hrs, and gives them the satisfaction of knowing they annoyed you. Throwing their messages into a black hole does neither of those, they just think you're ignoring them.
Then just ignore them, being notified when you are muted is good because sometimes a spammer isn't a troll.
Sometimes people are just really worked up. When you hit them with a mute, maybe it gives them time to cool down. Sometimes they really don't want to get banned forever. Of course there are trolls who will just come back and pick up where they left off, but then you report them to admins and mute them again in the meantime.
Ignoring them produces pretty much the same problem. They go "ARE YOU IGNORING ME?" and spam that 120000 times with new accounts until you want to quit. It's the same shit.
