This week, my country had reported its first case of rabies since 1997, and now affected the northern states. One of the states, Penang, had declared it began a operation of culling wild dogs based on expert advice (advice from federal veterinary department to be precise) and uphold public safety, which had stirred some controversy. I am conflicted on this issue. There is indeed a shortage of rabies vaccine in here (although 50,000 has been expected to arrive from France next week) which may promote such culling strategy, but it's also known that such indiscriminate culling is often ineffective at best, and inhumane at worst. It's not something I will support wholeheartedly with my conscience. I wonder how you guys think about such issues?

What kind of animal was the disease detected in? That makes a huge difference in the control methods.

The last case being reported in Penang, where the dog bites a man and is tested to have rabies. First two human cases, however, didn't specify the sources of the diseases by the media. [1] On the other front, the veterinary department had reported 39 positive out of 110 dogs captured in the affected states. [2]

This seems like a good opportunity to deploy an oral rabies vaccination program like many states in the US use. Combined with an aggressive sterilization program, you could get pretty good coverage in feral animals, since those are the most accessible vectors to treat. Other vectors, like bats (which is where I'd suspect the disease was reintroduced) are much more difficult to deal with.

So rabies can have other vectors as well? From my local news and opinion pieces they make it sounds like only dogs and humans can be infected by rabies.

No problem, rabies is a really cool* disease. But we haven't even scratched the surface, wait until you learn how it doesn't use the bloodstream to travel.

*Mind you, the guy calling this "cool" works at a vet hospital and cracks jokes about amputations.

Sort of. Usually, the virus starts to replicate in the muscle cells near the point of contact until a critical mass is achieved. Once it hits this critical point, the virus starts to bind to acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction and then begins to replicate and transmit up the nerve cells until it reaches the brain. Once in the brain, classic rabies symptoms (hydrophobia, partial paralysis, extreme agitation) occur and death follows within 2-10 days, unless the patient undergoes aggressive prophylactic treatment or is insanely lucky.

What makes rabies so dangerous is the long lag time between infection and the onset of symptoms. Bat bites are especially dangerous, since someone may not even notice they were bitten in the night if the wound has scabbed over by the time they wake up.

I used to volunteer with a trap-neuter-release clinic for cats which had a rabies prevention element to it. You're absolutely right that just culling doesn't work. It presents other dogs with the opportunity to re-enter, potentially kills pets, and the dogs that aren't caught become much more dangerous. It's more of an exercise in patience, but trapping is much more effective for dealing with a feral population.

Well, as a defense, they didn't just use culling as the only end-all solution to the current rabies problem, as there is an ongoing active vaccination program that worked alongside with the culling program.

There is also a political side of this issue as well, as state government of Penang is currently governed by DAP (splinter group of PAP, current government of Singapore, that chose to remain in Malaysia after Singapore was kicked out of the union in 1965), an opposition party that (until now) had very popular support in the state. The culling strategy obviously offended a lot of animal right groups and dog lovers, but it seems the state government is very adamant in adopting the culling strategy and wouldn't compromise to accommodate the opposite views, citing expert advice and the need to uphold public safety as the reason. There are many who supported the culling as well, often ridiculed the opposition to the culling program as putting the lives of animals above humans, and asking them to take actions such as adoption instead of voicing their objection.

Many people in my country are unhappy of the current government which had hold the position for more than 50 years, and believed sincerely that having a coalition of opposition parties, which included the DAP, as the replacement will help improve the country, and may explain why some support the culling, but this issue had make me a bit jaded. Do I really want a government that are so strong headed that they can not listen to reasonable objections? Sirius in Harry Potter said we should judge a person by how s/he treated his/her inferior, and DAP is not looking good if it's being judged using that criterion.

Been a while since I posted here.

Work is pretty exhausting. I get up at 530am and often get home around 8pm. The kids are typical middle schoolers. So that is an experience. Overall it's not too bad. Tough, but doable. It's nice to get into a routine.

I'm worried that the commute will be undoable when the Pope comes this week. So yea.

I am new map mod of /r/historicalworldpowers! That's fun and should be interesting. We still need claimants. Most noticeably in Persia and the Indus valley. I know we got some people interested in that area.

I finally had the apartment to myself this weekend, which never happens any more. It felt great to be able to just relax and not have to worry about my brother or his girlfriend being there. Of course, I also had to spend all weekend studying for my three history exams this Thursday, so that was a bit of a bummer. There should be a rule against having three essay exams in one day. My hand is going to hurt so much by the end of the day.

Also, I'm almost a month into cat ownership and I still love the little guy. I managed to get a video of him playing fetch, and it's the cutest thing ever. Here it is in gif form:

Before I start going on about Canadian politics and your eyes glaze over, I just wanted to launch a quick straw poll: Should I still be a mod here? I've been on the mod list for a year now and I haven't really done anything for at least a couple months. I can't even remember when my last post was in a non-meta thread. I'm especially curious to hear from the more recent arrivals to /r/badhistory, who weren't around when I was a regular.

RIGHT NOW ONTO THE GOOD STUFF.

The debate last Thursday had few upsets and left the polls completely unchanged. Mulcair was funnier, Trudeau was too hasty, and Harper was Harper. Really nothing mindblowing.

The one interesting thing was that Harper made an unexpected reference to "old stock Canadians" while talking about immigration, which has led to a bit of a furor as everybody tries to figure out what he meant. According to him it's "Canadians that are already here," while some accuse him of dogwhistling to play to his base.

After that I don't know about any major changes. Trudeau announced that a Liberal government would scrap the plan to buy F-35s and instead focus on the navy. This is reasonably significant if you've spent the past five years or so following Canadian politics (like some kind of loser), since the plan to buy F-35s was a pretty decently-sized scandal a few years back.

Polls are still in dead heat. As in, each party's lead is well within the margin of error, and it changes daily.

Scrapping the F-35 purchase is actually pretty reasonable at this point. The program hasn't really lived up to any of its promises. That said, it seems a bit odd to just hang the air force out to dry. Those F/A-18s aren't exactly getting any younger.

I still hate Doctor Who. Peter Capaldi deserves better than Stephen Moffat, and the season opener was an ADD shitshow where the writer tried to cram a perfectly serviceable season arc into a single episode. I don't understand why people liked it.

On an unrelated note, I went to open museum day here in Austin. I was disappointed by the Blanton, but I had a great time at the Elisabet Ney and the history museum, even if I ran into one re-enactor who rather insistently confused Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. I also ran into an interesting question. Obviously in Texas history, there is a long interaction with Mexico. You can't tell the history of Texas without also talking about its interactions with Mexico. However, I wonder at what point talking about history crosses the line into justifying modern biases. For instance, one re-enactor was talking about those horrible Mexicans stealing her cookware and raping her daughter. These are things that I'm sure happened (well, not to the re-enactor), but which can be told in such a way as to justify modern biases. I'm curious where that line is, and whether talking about history ought to keep half an eye on how it phrases its thoughts and whether it justifies modern political thought or racism.

As much as it pains me, I've stopped watching Doctor Who towards the end of the last season. The episodes were just terrible, and no actor can save a badly written script on his own. I think I might have liked one episode of the season, and that's just not enough to keep watching.

I haven't stopped watching because I know that when Doctor Who is good, it's really good. I also really enjoy Peter Capaldi, but there were definitely times when he was being held back by the script. This episode was made even worse by the baffling inclusion of Missy, who is and always will be a stupid obnoxious caricature of everything that made the show good.

I think I can pin down the moment I stopped enjoying that show as the killing Hitler episode, yet I keep watching. I like Capaldi, and I wanted to see Frank Skinner after all his fangirling on his radio show, but I think I've finally grown out of it.

I just hate how it can't stay on a plot thread for more than three minutes without feeling like the audience has lost interest. I could deal with the guitar playing Doctor if it meant the episode actually had a coherent narrative instead of constantly trying to one-up itself. At this point, it just feels like a bad parody of Doctor Who.

Did a new season start? I've only seen what's on Netflix. I enjoyed it more under Tennant where there wasn't such an attempt to have a series-long plot going and they'd all just go fight Satan or farty-monsters and grow as characters.

From now on, the only Doctor Who I'll be watching are the Rifftraxed movies.

I used to be a huge DW fan but Moffat's writing really doesn't sit well with me. I haven't watched any since the first few Capaldi episodes, and my interest was waning before then with the way Moffat was taking it. I miss RTD.

The story of Joshua Goldberg ( BBC article link for those who haven't heard of this serial troll before) fascinates me and I wonder if it's a start of a shift in the way we interact with each other online after its slow change from a fringe culture to completely mainstream. In my eyes the "everything goes" culture was always going to be temporary, and while it might take a fairly long time, at some point we'll face more and more rules and restrictions on our anonymity. And of course people like this little sociopath are the ones that will force the law-makers to set the rules for the rest of us.

I've never been on the side of those who claim the "it's the internet, grow a thicker skin" excuse for being arseholes online. You're still interacting with real people, so why would it be okay? But at the same time I don't want my online interactions everywhere to have my ID plastered all over them. There have to be outlets where you can be silly, dumb, or rant without fearing a backlash later in life during a job interview for example.

This is the post. Mine was about someone asking about the use of castles, but their teacher told them some sort of bullcrap about them only being used as hiding places for fleeing royals or something, so I felt compelled to write something about the use of castles as living spaces. I wasn't even that happy with it because I seem to have lost my best source on castles at home.

Having misophonia exacerbated by anxiety is fun. I got so distressed I broke the TV. I don't know if there's much I can do about it as it's literally a physical reaction.

On the bright side, I get to laugh at the people who've said that I was fine mentally, and the only reason I didn't get a job/resume education was because I was lazy.

Oh, also, a family friend said 'Hitler had a point about Jews controlling everything' in reference to the Israel-Palestine conflict. As someone who is generally pro-Palestine (though admittedly extremely ignorant), I burst out laughing at that one.

Literally 'hatred of sound'. Some people are sensitive to certain (in some cases all) sounds and get distressed or angry because of them. It's often linked to people with anxiety disorders, and, from what I've read, the worse the anxiety, the more sensitive you are.

Well, I think a lot of it is OCD based both in that it causes terrible intrusive thoughts and it's to do with a lack of control over the noise. Most of the time it's just me being overwhelmed by too much noise at one time.

For me, it's never more than a minor inconvenience unless I feel especially anxious/low, in which case it just explodes and essentially causes me to have a breakdown and be unable to do anything for the rest of the day.

The main problem is that stuff like meditation doesn't really help with it, as the noise persists regardless, and, as I said it's a reaction rather than a troubling thought.

Usually I just have to, ironically enough, distract myself with music while wearing headphones or something like that.

Anyone who's a regular Sporkle visitor will know that it's Kyrgyzstan (it's their favourite country to use in quizzes because 9 our of 10 people don't know how to spell it and thus get the answer wrong).

I guess she was of a well-off family before the revolution? I've heard the same from my wife's side of the family who were wealthy merchants in the Black Sea region before the revolution and lost most of their wealth during and after. Comparatively speaking for them he was all right, but that's a very blinkered way of looking at history.
