I'm kind of bummed to hear that. It was a nice way to take pictures of my family all together without handing my phone to a stranger. But then again I am an adult with a sense of empathy and spacial awareness so it's not like I would ever whack someone with it.

So if you're taking a selfie with your phone for a group photo and it's not catching everyone in the photo since you're not stretch armstrong, using a practical device to fix the issue is a heinous offense? I don't get it.

The way I saw it is taking a selfie is already hated and this is an accessory to do the hated thing so it gets super hated on.
I don't mind them myself, I took a few cool shots on my phone when I went for a drive up the mountain with my friends. Haven't used one since though.

They aren't allowed at Disney because people would use them on rides and they'd hit stuff with them. So they'd fall or fly back and hit someone.

There is no denying that they are a piece of useful equipment though. Just because some people might walk around with them extended or use them on rides doesn't mean that everyone who's ever used one should be vilified and that they should be banned everywhere.

I guess people much prefer to awkwardly scope out strangers passing by and guess which one probably won't run away with their phone or camera, then inconvenience them with taking a photo. Oh but first you have to give them a short tutorial in how to operate the device and if the photo sucks well then you are stuck with it or get to take up more of their time. Yes, the old way is truly the best way.

They are actually useful when utilized correctly. Like when my husband and I travel we would like to get photos with us and the background in it. Sometimes we are out in nature so no one there to ask to take the picture or we are in a place where you can't trust someone won't just bolt with your phone. It's nice.

Could I go out and buy a nice camera and tripod? Sure. Or I could spend $25 and use the camera on my phone.

Selfie sticks, or Monopods to use the cooler, less annoying term, can be used for some awesome shots and footage when they're used well.

I got one for 5 bucks this summer and used it a few times to take pictures of me and my family. Like this one where I took my girls to the zoo and my husband wasn't able to go.

Maybe being hit by tourists with no spatial awareness is your idea of a good time. Personally I was over them within 3 days of my first summer working for Disney. There's only so many blows you can take from oblivious Brazilians before you hate the device as much as the user.
