Quite informative, but Jesus, that is just so bloody American.

Each blade of grass stands for FREEDOM

it is a very American sport though.

You're goddamn right it is.

It's just intentionally over the top. I mean, I get that that's American, too, but it really interferes with the presentation here, IMO.

[–]obsidian_butterfly 9ポイント10ポイント  (1子コメント)

I dunno... It gets the point across, which is ultimately the goal. And it was pretty funny if you think of it as satirically American.

I didn't think that it did get the point across. Ok, so you have to advance the ball ten yards to get four something. Under what conditions do you stop? Most versions of football you just keep going back and forth continually until the half (or other long period) times out. When can you kick to get a goal? Why would you punt?

Not desparate for answers (though mildly interested) - just felt that it neither gave an explanation nor was intentionally obscure like those explanations of the laws of cricket that you occasionally see.

I find it weird that they mentioned safetys, but elected not to mention 2 point run ins.

God, I'm old, but 2 pt run ins are a fairly recent NFL co-option of NCAA college practices. Right? I know their origin, but really no clue of the time frame. Hell, the 90's still seem semi-recent to me. Truth

Totally lost with the 2 leagues part. Is one supposed to be better than the other? Why they don't play all in one league?

You think thats bad? Try baseball where the 2 different leagues play by different rules.

isn't it just one rule that's different?

It used to be the case that the home-plate umpire was positioned differently. I think this was done away with a few years ago.

Other than that, its just the DH, but with the need to do double-switches in the NL, its more complicated than just pitchers batting or not

As we like to say over in /r/baseball, FUCK THE DH.

Yea baseball is the one sport I can't ever finish a game of unless I am at it. I've even watched nascar races and golf all day.

It originally started out as two separate leagues who didn't play each other. Then the ymerged and kept the generally two league structure. Teams from each league play each other also, so it's more important during playoffs.

Think of it as just one league: the NFL. The AFC-NFC separations exist mostly for the playoffs (both deciding who makes it to the playoffs, and then who each team plays in the playoffs). They all play in the NFL, but come Super Bowl time, the best team from the AFC plays the best team from the NFC. The AFC and NFC both are further divided into North, South, East, and West (a few examples include the AFC North and the NFC South) which again exist mostly to decide who makes the playoffs.

I know and understand football well, and this video confused me. I think it is too superficial to be understandable.

Don't really see how this qualifies for the sub.

Yeah I agree, not every man likes football.

And why should every man know this?

It's always nice to have a little knowledge of popular things. For instance, I'm not a soccer fan, but around World Cup time I try to brush up on the roster names, keep track of who the team plays against and who they played in the previous World Cup. Sometimes these things are good for conversations at parties.

If you ever attend a Superbowl party, you should understand what the hell goes on during the Superbowl.

Don't be the douche that calls it "Sports ball" and be That Guy.

What if you live in the rest of the world that doesn't screen the Superbowl let alone have any following for it?

According to this only 45% of redditors are from outside of the US.

Don't be the douche that calls it "Sports ball" and be That Guy.

The proper name is handegg.

Fuck that's me

It's good that you realize it now.

Yeah, fuck me for not wanting to invest time in a sport that has repeatedly failed to capture my attention. What if I just want to socialize and chug beer?

If my friends invite me over to hang out and watch Fast and the Furious 7 when I haven't seen the last 5 in the franchise, do I say, "Sorry, can't. Not up to date." Or do I show up and enjoy the atmosphere for what it's worth without particularly giving a damn about what's on screen?

it helps to at least know what the movie is about. no one's asking you to study the history of the nfl; just enough to not be that annoying guy who constantly complains about not understanding what's going on.

Because, like it or not, sports are a universal part of what is considered "manly." This video in less than 3 minutes gives a novice enough background to watch a game and have an idea of what is going on. I would watch the shit out of a whole series of these covering every popular sport around the world. Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Aussie Rules Football, Water Polo, Jai'alai (or however the hell you spell it), bring it on.

Apparently "Every Man Should Know" means "Things No-one Outside The US Gives A Flying Fuck About" these days.

Not true anymore. The NFL is getting global popularity.

As an excuse to get wasted, sure. Interest in the sport? I don't know a single person who gives a fuck.

Just out of curiosity, do you live in the US?

I know a couple of folks who stay up to watch the Super Bowl once a year.

TIL: if you aren't American, you despise football and openly voice it. If you don't like sports you openly voice it. It's like crossfit or vegans.

for all the foreigners here, they left out the most important aspect of american football: commercials. from start to finish, a game lasts about 3 hours, but there's only a few minutes of the ball actually being in play(I read between 10-15 minutes total). so little happens, most of that time is spent watching commercials. Im convinced that american football is just a ruse to get people to watch as many commercials as possible in 3 hours. God forbid it's a high scoring game because after a touchdown is the least action-dense part of football: touchdown, commercial, extra-point, commercial, kick-off, commercial. it's terrible.

for the foreigners who don't understand why people watch it: beer and food. you can drink a lot of beer in 3 hours. and so little happens, it doesn't matter if you walk outside to grill a burger. you won't miss anything.

Haha yes. The first time I saw an NFL game in person, I thought to myself "Why is everyone standing around on the field, get moving!" Oh right, we're at the stadium so we aren't seeing the commercials the networks are playing right now. That part's OK once you get used to it.

You're clearly unfamiliar with the game.

American football (compared to soccer/futbol) is a game of set plays.. Nothing but set plays. Every play (snap) is designed and planned. That's why it shows as limited playtime on paper. Just like soccer, set plays don't last long at all (several seconds), hence the numerous breaks and commercials.

Despite this, the game has a flow and momentum, especially when offense carries on with new set of downs (and no huddle offense), or when time is running out on a losing team. Definitely fun to watch.

Lots of outsiders think it's nothing but a bunch of players piling and tackling each other, yet it's a well designed and placed match ups between offense and defense.

I'm a big fan of American Football and Soccer (weekends are never ending games from EPL, La Liga, and NFL)

Cheers

nope, im from louisiana and have watched a lot of football. im well acquainted with the game.

wow I can tell you really don't understand the game of football. If you don't know very much of something, you shouldn't put you're two cents in :)

name one thing more dominate in professional football than commercials

JJ Watt.

Dude for real though. I'd rather just watch Watt walk around yelling or even just fucking stand there than watch commercials. Watt is definitely the answer. Damn mammoth beast.

Have you seen the Mic'd Up footage from his game against the Titans where he caught a TD pass? Nuts.

I watched this video and had to work out after.

All I know is, you mess with me you got problems.

I wish they would just show us in between plays. In the rare UK showings they cut to a studio to break down each play but even that gets tedious.

In soccer/futbol they just put the advertisements right on the players uniforms... I'm not sure if that's better or worse.

Don't be silly. Who cares what they have on their kits?

Well i like to buy and wear jeresys/kits of my favorite teams. And sometimes I want to be a walking advertisement for the team I'm a fan of without being a walking advertisement for other corporations.

Also, I dont have to watch the commercials. I can talk to people, order a drink or if I'm at home grab a snack without missing anything important. Yeah it sucks that the game takes so much longer, but i've adapted and made it work to my advantage.

[–]Dekkaz 3

Of course its better, it means zero intrusion on watching the game.

Imo, college football is better than NFL because people are fighting to keep scholarships and coaches need to impress schools with results.

I find it more enjoyable to watch it live and there because no commercials.

So if you happen to be down south and near a college, that's something you shouldn't miss out on.

I read between 10-15 minutes total

yeah, it's definitely not accurate.

they only covered 4 games, but it seems reasonable:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748704281204575002852055561406

if you have something contrary, i'd like to read it

Counting the exact seconds the game is actually in play is misleading of course. A more concrete example would be quoting the average duration of a "condensed" game, which is an edited version of a game with all 'dead' moments cut out and a few replays of the plays that are worthwhile. It usually clocks around 45 minutes per game. Source: I'm an NFL Game Pass subscriber

I understand what you mean. I live in germany, so I torrent the games, and when I skip ahead, it usually takes about an hour to watch the game, but even then, there is still plenty of dead moments that could be cut out. unless we're considering different things to be "dead moments," I don't see how you could say there is 45 minutes of game time

We're having the rugby world cup here in England right now. It's being broadcast by commercial overlord ITV. You know what they aren't doing? Showing ads during the game play. We get them a few times during the half time. But not during the match.

So like regular football then (the non-American one).

Regular football is often broadcast on the BBC, who don't show any ads. As a result, when ITV and Sky show football, they tend to dial back on the adds a bit anyway.

I don't think the Americans fancy what we're saying here.

Oh, they're gonna be in trouble for using the s-word.

Yea, football isn't really something EMSK. I couldn't give two shits about football, does that make me less of a man somehow?

No, but knowledge is a good thing. I don't care about knitting, but if I can spend 5 minutes learning something so I'm not potentially isolated from a future conversation, then I'll gladly accept.

That being said, I do think every man should know sports. They don't have to follow it, but knowing how it works should be up there with knowing how cars work.

lol that was never even implied. So if you don't know something that's posted here it makes you less of a man in your eyes? Stop looking for things to complain about.

Yeah. Pretty much.

Where we're you when I needed you!

It bothered me that everytime the QB would take a hit he'd fumble the ball, making that "safety" not a safety

I thought this was about the band for a moment, and I was like "To understand American Football you must go through a breakup just as you're coming to the end of your college experience"

Yeaaaah I'm American and I say fuck this. Not everybody likes American football, so why does every man need to know this? I, personally, don't give a shit about American football.

You probably should, seeing as you live in a country where it's immensely popular.

For me as a European, foot football is something I can use to strike up a conversation with just about anyone on every continent but yours.

Knowing a thing or two about American football must be immensely useful when travelling about in the U.S.

Yeah....

British here... no

I enjoy a lot of the CFL rules better but the talent pool and the hype just isn't there

I don't like football so I'm okay with not knowing.

Yea but if you know the basics you can at least participate in some type of discussion when it is on at a bar or friends house.

Doesn't hurt to know things though.

Knowing the things your father did to your mother might hurt a bit.
