Backup your Google chrome setting so that when bad things happen you’ll not be left on the spot. For example you need to reformat your computer, you obviously need to reinstall Google chrome later except if you’re using Google chrome portable. If you have no backup therefor you’ll lose your extensions, save passwords, customization and most important of all your bookmarks as bookmarks serves as reference of all of your web activities.
If you want to backup your bookmarks only:
- Open Google chrome, click the square with three stripes on the upper right corner then click Bookmarks>Bookmark manager or just paste this address on the address bar.

- In the bookmark manager tab, click Organize>Export bookmarks to HTML file. Browse to the location where you want to save your bookmark backup then hit Save.
To restore bookmarks only:
- Follow step one on how to backup bookmarks.
- In bookmark manager tab, click Organize>Import bookmarks from HTML file. Locate your HTML bookmark file then hit Open. This process is also applicable to those who use Google chrome portable.
Backup entire Google chrome settings by enabling sync.
In this process you can backup your entire Google chrome setting including your bookmarks, extensions, saved passwords, tabs and other customization by just signing in to your Google account. Google Chrome will upload your entire setting to your Google account making it accessible to any computer or device you use together with your Google account. If for example you signed in your Google account into two Google chrome using different computers, what changes you make on Google chrome computer 1 will automatically reflect on Google chrome computer 2.
[icon name=”icon-warning-sign”]For security measures, avoid signing in your Google account into public or untrusted computers. Your data will be stored on these computers and will be accessible to other users. To remove your data, just delete the user you use to sign in.
To sign in to your Google account just click the square with three stripes on the upper right side of Google chrome or just paste the address given below to the address bar then click Sign in to Chrome.
This setting is also applicable to Google chrome portable.

Backup entire Google chrome setting manually
In this process we will backup all our Google chrome settings like your extensions, bookmarks, saved passwords and other configuration manually.
- Press Windows Key + R then paste in the box the code below then click OK.
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data
- Copy the folder named Default then put it in a safe location.
To restore your entire setting manually:
- Follow step one on how to backup your entire setting manually.
- Copy the backup folder named Default that you saved before then paste it inside the folder that you opened in step one overwriting the current Default folder and the files inside.
To restore your entire setting to Google chrome portable:
- Navigate to the path given below if for example you installed your portable Google chrome on drive F then delete all the files that you see.
F:\GoogleChromePortable\Data\profile\Default
- Copy and paste the content (not the folder) of the backup file that you save before. That’s it! You have successfully restored your settings.
Iive been having trouble downloading pics to my smart phone
I lost my bookmarks and customization’s recently. I have numerous off site backup sets. I selected a backup set from just before the loss and restored that “default” directory including all the sub-folders and files. But this restored a much older set of customization’s and bookmarks. Any suggestions as to what I might have done wrong?
You mentioned that you have many backups on hand.. Are you sure that it is the latest that you have restored or did you try doing it again? Because there is no other ways to restore earlier backups unless you selected it.
Why not backup the entire Google folder within AppData?

Did the backup, uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled Chrome, then put my bookmarks back. As I’m not sure what setting or extension jammed up my previous install, I’ll leave it “new” with only a few extensions. No more choppy YouTube video!

what if u used windows xp my command prompt claims the following directory:

Not sure exactly for XP but figure out how to get it to show hidden files and folders.

mcafee has apparently hijacked my default search search engine so that now, if i search from the omnibox, i jump into yahoo search. and i can’t do anything within chrome to reestablish it as default. if i follow your instructions on how to copy the Default userdata folder, invoke chrome reset to re-establish chrome as the default search engine, will that get wiped out when i move my copy of Default back, so i’m no better than when i started? i have other settings that i want kept, but i ESPECIALLY want my cookies back
