The films are made by and for dudes. The nerdy guy is a loveable loser the audience identify with. The chubby girl is just a tragic uncool person they can laugh at. That girl is who the audience can already get. It has to be cheerleader or nothing to be a happy ending. The films made with a female ticket buying audience in mind are always an ugly Betty situation. The actress is genuinely very attractive but wearing a hooded sweater or some glasses. Once the male lead proves he loves her for who she truly is, off come the glasses and oh my god she was hot all along. Let's jump into this flying car and wave our graduating class off.

30 Rock kind of did that with John Hamm. The actual reason is that men are the ones upon whom the responsibility of initiating a relationship is put. If a lame girl likes a hot guy, she's just sad about it and tries to do things to get his attention, if a lame guy lines a hot girl, he actively tries to win her affections. I'm not saying that's how it should be, but that's the norm, and romantic comedies are generally a lowest common denominator thing.

It also helps that it's essentially their job to stay fit. Your average doesn't get paid to work out, they have to fit it before or after their regular job and home duties. I could look like a gladiator if someone paid me to work out.

The skinny mothers might not be unrealistic, but what always gets me are the characters who constantly eat yet stay in shape.

I love 30 Rock, but it did get a little hard to suspend belief since it was a running joke how Liz Lemon ate junk food constantly and never worked out but still looked extremely good.
