Wealth isn't zero-sum, but value is. It's not the number of dollars in your banking account, but your relative position in society that matters.

Why? I would rather be lower class now then a king one thousand years ago. I like computers, modern heating and not dying of cholera a lot better then I would enjoy ruling something.

I'd be the king.

TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN, BABY.

Be careful. That didn't turn out well for the other Baratheons

The fuck are you talking about?

Visiting whorehouses and making bastards, getting pissed on strongwine every day, growing a kickass beard and eventually getting gored by a boar is exactly how I want to live my life.

Dude's got a point. But, then again, you could be Stannis. Get a island in the middle of nowhere you don't want (true, Dragonstone was the traditional home of the Taragryen heir, but what if Joffery became an adult while Bobby B lived?), see your little brother take your familys home, meet a chick that like to set fire to people, start liking setting fire to people, become a rebel, have your fleet get blown up and your army utterly defeated in your attempt to take the capital and then, of course, meet Ser Twenty of House Goodmen

I've always assumed you would be a Stannis economist, didn't King Robert rack up a huge amount of government debt due to his excessive feasting and partying?

In all seriousness, I am a Stannis man.

Then again, we aren't living a thousand years ago. If we were, you wouldn't have any idea of the future, and you would still measure the value you hold relative to everyone else. The real question is whether you'd rather be lower class a thousand years ago or a king.

I don't think that's the proper question. People don't like disease even if they don't know about the antibiotics in the future. If status is the only thing that matters then giving antibiotics to everyone doesn't increase welfare. That's absurd.

What? Surely value and societal position are different things. I might grow a garden in my back yard, which might add value to my life but might not do anything for my social status.

You clearly haven't met my grandma.
