Yes, my child was one of those children. He had to be rescued by a neighbor. He went to the bus stop and apparently thought that he'd try sticking his tongue to the freezing pole. He did this despite the fact that we have turned 24 hours of A Christmas Story on every single tv for the entire 24 hours since before he was born. That kid is a Kevin in the making.

i think its more funny people still use pagers lol

Funny enough, pagers are still widely used by most emergency professionals to include doctors, medics, police (swat) etc. They are much more reliable in terms of coverage and are not as prone to interference resulting in service outages or "missed calls".

I, uh, have some warm liquid if you are really desperate.

Funny story, I USD to know an appliance repair guy way back and one of the things he services was refrigerators. Back then it was all freon and that stuff is nasty. Anyhow one day him and a coworker are taking one apart and a pipe let's go covering his partner's hand in freon. Apparently that is super bad news for your akin as you freeze up.

So I asked what someone does in that situation, warm water?

Nope, if you screw that up you could cause even more damage. However there is one thing you have that is at perfect body temperature.

So there he is, peeing on his coworker's hand while they try to get an ambulance. It was at that moment I decided never to mess with freon.

If you get out of the way quick enough it won't eve hurt -a.c. tech

Lucky for you, they stopped using freon as a refrigerant 20 years ago.

Edit: to save myself the time and effort, and hopefully save some of you the trouble of correcting me with your anecdotal evidence, I'm going to go ahead and qualify my statement by saying; they stopped using freon in over 95% of refrigerant and A/C systems around 20 years ago. Yes, it still exists, please stop replying.

R12 and R134 still get referred to as Freon in my industry, even if it's not correct.

[–]Coomb 1

There are many, many types of Freon. It's a DuPont trade name for a line of chemicals. Freon 23 (fluoroform) is still widely manufactured and used.

Reliability and simplicity. You don't need too many more characters than "PATIENT SMITH CODING"

Serious question, but aren't they on a different network than cell towers?

So, on the off chance that cell service is down, wouldn't pagers continue working?

Or am i mistaken on that

Correct, completely different infrastructure. Pager messages are broadcast more like radio stations do, as opposed to cellular which has lots of smaller "towers" much closer together.

This actually depends. Some (most) medical services have their own spectrum and broadcast centers to use for this. But not all pagers have their own separate 'infrastructure' as I assume you use the word. Usually the equipment is on the same towers but it's antiquated and tends to be it's own equipment on those same towers.

Some companies actually have pager services that are actually just text message machines in disguise. Some have something similar to radio towers (which honestly is the same concept with cell phones).

Also, I believe cell frequencies can interfere with some hospital equipment, but not pagers, so they can carry them anywhere in the hospital and still be contacted immediately.

This is because pagers don't transmit, they only receive. So there's no interference coming from them.

Most modern pagers can actually reply either with preset messages or just a confirmation.

AFAIK, they don't actually interfere with anything. People have their cell phones on them all the time anyways. The no cell phone signs are more about preventing annoyances than anything else.

Posted this above but this is exactly why us nuclear plant employees are issued pagers. I easily get a signal inside the containment vessel up against a tornado wall when my cell phone loses signal walking in from the parking lot.

Exactly this. Most as a matter of fact do, and I know some portable radios even are capable of receiving a page and displaying a text message.

My town has volunteer firefighters in addition to the full time firefighters. They used a tone system on the main fire frequency to alert the volunteers by sending different tones to activate the pagers.

Yep. Fire stations normally have two tones, and the dispatch center is responsible for dropping them over the air to alert them. The first tone is an in-house tone for all the full time staffed and working crew, and the second tone is sometimes called a POC (paid on call) tone. The second tone is sent to the pagers of the volunteers/on call firefighters when the department is busy using its resources and needs more assistance.

They're insecure though. It's weird that you can just look at them if you tune in to any POCSAG frequency.

That's why there are privacy protocols.

Because they don't allow for immediate answering. Doctors need occasional rest.

The systems are self-contained. The hospitals have the transmitters on location, so if there is a communications failure (ie. wide spread flooding), the service still works as long as the hospital is operational.

And a lot of business support for hospitals, especially anything technology-related.

Something is down, or an MD unable to access something, whoever's on call is definitely getting a page. EMR is highlighting their favorite med as spelled incorrectly, but the doctor "NEEDS THIS FIXED YESTERDAY", you're getting a page (and god help you when there's an angry MD on the other end).

You totally underestimate the things people call 911 for, though I agree it's ridiculous.

I once called about thunder.. There's a story, I swear.

A little background, 11 years ago A chemical plant near my house exploded. Loud boom, people died, evacuations were ordered.. The chemical plant was rebuilt, and operates today. There's also train tracks that carry all kinds of wonderful chemicals that runs nearby.

One weekend night, I was watching TV and starting to snooze on the couch. My eyes were almost shut and I was as relaxed as i could be... Until a boom so loud it shook my windows occurred. It didn't sound like thunder, more like an explosion.

Within a few moments, I was dressed and ready to evacuate.. I opened the door and listened.. no sirens.. So i did what I at the time though was reasonable.. I called 911 and reported what I had heard.

A few minutes later, a Police truck pulls up and the officer is chuckling "It was just thunder, scared the hell out of me too" I thanked him and off he went.

My friend works at the jail, he told me later that I wasn't the only one to do that. It was also an otherwise slow night, so no harm really done.

I would be really tempted to go to the house and start saying something like

"The nukes just hit Washington DC and damn one went off a 20 miles away you better evacuate... I got to go warn the rest of the people."

I am not a cop for a reason I guess.

I don't underestimate it at all. My aunt has a friend who was a 911 operator in the 90's making over $20 an hour. She quit and took a lower paying job because of all the crazy shit she had to deal with. Things like people calling 911 about a noise complaint on a construction crew. The caller would loose it when they were told it's within sound ordinance hours and it was completely legal.

That's good to hear. Years ago when I started I was completely naive to the amount of system abuse that goes on. I've been called to many ridiculous things such as to turn down the air conditioner, explain to people why the single antibiotic pill they took an hour ago has not cured them, had a 20 year old guy that was scared by a power transformer that exploded near him (no injuries) and many many more.

Things like people calling 911 about a noise complaint on a construction crew. The caller would loose it when they were told it's within sound ordinance hours and it was completely legal.

On the scale of stupid calls we receive, that one's actually pretty tame.

I feel like some companies set up the systems and have basically just been like fuck it we already have a legally solid policy when it comes to pagers. Can't send nudes via page

I licked a BBQ twice as a kid in the winter. First time I hit snow and didn't stick. Second time the bottom of my tongue stuck to the top of the lid.

I don't understand why everyone thinks this is such a problem.

All you have to do is breathe through your mouth to thaw your tongue off, or pour water over it.

I can't imagine anybody really calling 911 for this. (I grew up in WI where this is common knowledge, but I recently impressed some Californian's with this knowledge, so I guess it isn't as common sense as it is to me....)
