There is no way that someone can convince me that a billion dollars is total productivity of a laborer in a lifetime ever.

Aside from the fact you've written off the opponents of your position immediately, so there's no point to me even trying to convince you, but you're also assuming most billionaires got their wealth through labour. Which probably isn't the case.

I'd say Corbyn is worse.

I'm largely indifferent to Osborne to be honest. At lot of his personal views are actually rather commendable (at least to me; things like immigration, social policy etc.) but he has a degree in history, not econ, and is largely towing the party line.

All of the bullshit with austerity is a Tory policy which Osborne gets to take the credit (or more accurately, blame) for.

Railways are already nationalised. The problem is that private train companies have to bid to provide services on state tracks.

Why?

He's utterly outside mainstream economics when it comes to what he wants to implement.

Economics 内の Baratheon_Economist によるリンク Causes and Consequences of Income Inequality: A Global Perspective

[–]Baratheon_Economist[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

This paper analyzes the extent of income inequality from a global perspective, its drivers, and what to do about it. The drivers of inequality vary widely amongst countries, with some common drivers being the skill premium associated with technical change and globalization, weakening protection for labor, and lack of financial inclusion in developing countries. We find that increasing the income share of the poor and the middle class actually increases growth while a rising income share of the top 20 percent results in lower growth—that is, when the rich get richer, benefits do not trickle down. This suggests that policies need to be country specific but should focus on raising the income share of the poor, and ensuring there is no hollowing out of the middle class. To tackle inequality, financial inclusion is imperative in emerging and developing countries while in advanced economies, policies should focus on raising human capital and skills and making tax systems more progressive.

China disagrees with that assessment. So does Qatar.

Indeed, on the contrary it's probably the other way around. More rights/less of the state fucking up your shit = better growth.

We live in a finite world with finite resources

So? All that does is constrain the rate at which we can grow over a certain amount of time. Given infinity, growth is also potentially infinite, since there are no physical upper limits to our ability of efficiently exploiting resources.

This is not controversial among economists.

No, it isn't.

A billionaire becoming, say, 5pc more wealthy doesn't actually harm you. The size of the pie from which we all take a piece is not fixed. If you want to worry about a form of inequality, it should be wage inequality--not income or wealth inequality.

Wage inequality has been growing because the lower classes have been stagnating (although, at least in the US they've had some luck with the disinflationary effects of trade with China, as well as improvements in the quality of goods) because technology has improved the productivity of certain workers more than others. This is a process known as skill-biased technical change, and focusing on billionaires and CEOs muddies the issue. The solution to inequality is education, not this ridiculous burn the rich attitude.

are applauded for providing what should be government programs through charity we have fucked up.

How utterly arbitrary.

I like to think the problem there is the lack of governmental effectiveness, not the mere existence of billionaires. People who donate to charity should be applauded regardless.

At what point did I say I prefer charity to a proper safety net? I didn't.

The point is that most billionaires aren't this uber-greedy, malicious class of narcissists Bernie seems to want to paint them as.

"Some people said some things which immediately invalidates everything about rich charity".

I'm actually not a fan of the giving pledge, but only because I doubt its efficacy. What matters, at least in this case, is the intention; I find it highly implausible that every billionaire--or even most of them--on the giving pledge's roll is doing it simply for a tax break.

Believe it or not, at levels of such wealth it becomes a hell of a lot less about purchasing power and a hell of a lot more about reputation. Charity is a very good way of helping wealthy people feel both internally and socially fulfilled. The problems is the aspersions cast by Sanders that billionaires are this malicious class of psychopaths seeking to take everything and leave everybody else with nothing.

Huh, I'm no fan of Corbyn, but credit where credit is due.

As somebody who's had to deal with mental health issues, and who has witnessed--at least in some small way--the quality of care and infrastructure (and science/medicine for that matter) I commend this. It could be used to tremendous effect, and I hope it is.

And yet there are record numbers of billionaires giving at least half of their wealth away to charity.

The fact that Bernie Sanders is excited about this victory--given his largely poor policies--is not something for Corbyn to celebrate. It's one populist complimenting another.
