That's unfortunate. I got a Shield first Paladin I killed in Post-Plantera Dungeon. It was the first time I even went in there too. It sits in my chest even though I'm playing melee. :l

My first melee focused run and I got both the shield and the hammer in the same dungeon trip, which was actually for ectoplasm. I was very happily surprised.

First time I killed a Paladin I got a Godly Hammer, I was stoked.

LoL yeah it is a pain in the ass to farm those guys. I remember back when 1.2 was released, was trying for ages to get that hammer. Got lucky in 1.3 though, got the hammer and shield fairly quickly much to my surprise.

Ugh I know how you feel dude. I've gone into the dungeon so many times with battle potions and water candles, I've spent hours in there with no luck at all

My dungeon doesn't have the walls to spawn snipers. Only occasionally will a rusted skeleton spawn. But snipers are a no go. I got 1 that gave me the rifle.
Trade you a shield for a scope? :P
