Did you ever watch Lincoln? Tommy Lee Jones' character had a really interesting predicament. He was vehemently against slavery, practically to a modern level. He was even married or had a deep relationship thing with a black woman.

When a huge vote was put to the floor as a compromising measure, to free some slaves but reserve them to segregation and other discriminatory laws they'd have to live with in place of slavery, he had some deep discussions with Lincoln.

He was a man of principle who could not vote for the bill because he could not vote to put black people into segregation and all these other bad things. All he could morally do was vote to free them as equal free persons. So as a deciding vote, he was going to vote no on this bill to free some slaves because it wasn't good enough. Condemning them to prolonged slavery.

So Lincoln gives him a story about a compass he used...
