I love that the ruffles in the skirt represent her tentacles instead of having made actual tentacles which would have been extremely cumbersome. Lots of wonderful choices here! She looks awesome.

no, the new disney villians line made ursula "prettier" and this is her exact dress

hmmm. My first reaction was that it was stupid to slim her down, but then my second thought was I wonder if they were trying to distance the idea that villain = fat.

Or, says the super cynical bastard, they didn't want to make a new doll body mold just for Ursula so they shoehorned her into a standard fashion doll body.

Never attribute to malice what can better be attributed to incompetence; and never attribute to incompetence what can be attributed to cost cutting.

As a woman that had a million Barbie dolls growing up, most of the fun of these fashion dolls is that you can take their clothes off and trade them and redress them and make new outfits by mixing and matching pieces. By standardizing the body shape between the various dolls, the customers can still have that option. Rather than having one fat Ursula who only has one dress and can never change anything ever.

(Related: you can stretch some of Skipper's clothes to make them fit on Barbie. It's a quick way to make Barbie look like a prostitute.)

t's a quick way to make Barbie look like a prostitute.

All my Barbies already kinda looked like prostitutes. Especially the ones in those skintight spandex mini-dresses, and you'd try to make them sit down, and they'd just be, like, Linsdey Lohan-ing everybody...I started cutting up my socks and making them wear those instead.

Linsdey Lohan-ing

ಠ_ಠ

Oh, I'm sorry...Lindsay Lohan-ing. Man, I totally Donald Trump'd the hell out of her name...

These aren't the kinds of dolls you swap the clothes on though, they're definitely collectors dolls. But I think the person above is 100% right when they say she was slimmed down so they wouldn't have to make another mold.

I think you two are right. This will be a case of cost and customisation and not a "let's change ursula because she's fat or ugly" (They've also slimmed down the Queen of Hearts too.)

I don't really see an issue here. It's not like any of this is official remakes or a statement. Just people reading too much into it and getting defensive.

Off-topic, I often forget about ursula but she truly is an amazing villain. I'd love to see a life action version with CGI close to Bill Nighy's Davy Jones'. No insult to her but I think Dawn French would have been a perfect live-action Ursula

Oh my god, Dawn French would KILL IT. That would be awesome.

It's not. They made fat Ursula already and she was a hit. This is part of a limited edition themed series.

(Related: you can stretch some of Skipper's clothes to make them fit on Barbie. It's a quick way to make Barbie look like a prostitute.)

Is that a typo? Seems like you'd have to actively try to make her not look like a prostitute

It's a quick way to make Barbie look like a prostitute.)

And it's a quick way to make Skipper totally naked.

Especially since it's a collector's item. Usually they have similar body shapes and the hair/face paint/clothing is "inspired", not an actual representation. None of the dolls look like the villains in the movies.

Also the Queen of Hearts was heavyset in Alice in Wonderland, but is thin in the dolls.

And Mother Gothel was older in Tangled.

And The Evil Queen from Snow White was an old woman in a black robe for most of the movie.

And Maleficent was a dragon.

I'm disappointed. I identify as a dragon and this lack of representation is appalling. /s

Wow, I can hardly recognize Cruella de Vil. Her face was so angular that they just changed it entirely.

ha! yes, you are probably correct.

Hanlons razor is one of my favorite things. I've never heard that second part but it rings just as true

I added the second part because it feels true, but I would be shocked if I was the first to add it.

I wonder how much a fat ursula doll weighs.

[–]Jreken 3

If you're buying it in the UK, probably about £20-£30.

About three fifty.

Never attribute to malice what can better be attributed to incompetence; and never attribute to incompetence what can be attributed to cost cutting.

Occam's Economic's Razor

I have a fat Ursula Barbie, so I don't think that's it.

That could be from another manufacturer, Disney collectibles can vary wildly in quality and origin.

They already have a rotund Ursula doll. This is for a limited edition fashion model line meant to mimic runway trends.

There are A LOT more non-fat Disney Villains than fat ones. I'd be surprised if anyone complained about Ursula being a fat villain. And if they did, I would slap them because that is dumb.

Oh I'd be willing to make a hefty wager that there's been at least 10 individuals who complained about Ursula being fat. "How am I supposed to show this to my daughter!?!?"

The first comment on the article is "NO WONDER SO MANY WOMEN ARE STARVING THEMSELVES"

There's more obese women than anorexic women, aren't there? Also, logically following, wouldn't Hercules be a reason so many men are swole? Mulan the reason so many girls are enlisting? etc?

It's all stupid.

Also, logically following, wouldn't Hercules be a reason so many men are swole? Mulan the reason so many girls are enlisting?

But that doesn't fit their narrative...

No, no. It only counts when things become skinny.

obviously they want women even evil ones to be thin , so we can battle diabetus - no more will we have american girls getting into plus size clothing to make for more accurate cosplay! THIS ENDS TODAY!!

That doesn't seem likely, considering there are so many thin villains and really so few fat ones (especially if we're talking about Disney).

Well, I can't say this wasn't someone at Disney's thinking, I just don't think it's sound when you really consider it.

I thought she was based on the drag queen Divine, so naturally she'd be fat

[–]Narrative_Causality 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Or maybe they wanted to get away from Ursula's drag queen origin?

[–]Skaid 0

Jafar from Aladdin? Scar from Lion King? Maleficent? I don't see the villans being fat as a trend here....

I didn't mean there was a trend, just that someone might have felt it was a bad idea to make the villain a fat person.

I think it's also a personality choice too. A thinner Ursula shows more focus in the vanity area.

And in the related section:

"Too old for a two piece? 39 is the age at which women should give up the two piece for good."

What fantastic consistency.

I should tell that to my mom. 52 and she's still half naked on every opportunity she can :/

If you didn't say the skinny woman in the purple dress was Ursula I would not have guessed it on my own.

She could have done the original Ursula - I'm just saying that I enjoyed her decision not to. There are many versions and crossovers of ALL the Disney characters.

That's not what torso means.

You don't need to out quotes around "prettier"

That's like if mael elder god of the seas ever married cruella devilleand had a child.

Ursula also didn't have tentacles through the whole movie, so this is a nice effect where you can imagine her with or without the tentacles. Super impressive.

To be fair, she only doesn't have tentacles when she's in her Vanessa form, which looks nothing like her.

I am sure this is mighty insensitive but it is nice to see someone considering their body type when picking a cosplay

I was really taken aback when I found out there was a controversy about this, but now I think I get it.

There's this mean prank you can do where you tell someone they can't tell the difference between 2%, 1% and whole milk. They say they can, so you blindfold them and pour them two glasses of milk and one glass of orange juice. When they taste the OJ, they're expecting milk, and they react as if it were spoiled: spitting it out and gagging. There's nothing wrong with the OJ--it just wasn't what they were expecting.

I think it's the same thing with cosplay. It's OK for people to create really accurate cosplay where they look exactly like their character by playing to their type, and it's also OK for people to wear really elaborate, well done costumes for characters that have a different sex, skin tone, and/or level of body fat. None of that hurts anyone or is morally wrong, but if someone clicks on a link expecting to see cosplay that is very visually similar to the character and gets something that looks wrong in a jarring way, they're going to perceive all of the differences big and small.

I once had a breakfast sandwich at a place that mostly made desserts, so when the plate came with a few decorative lines of a brown syrupy substance, I assumed it was chocolate.

Turns out it was some balsamic vinegar based sauce, basically the polar opposite flavor profile from chocolate. It was so unexpected that I gagged and almost threw up on the table.

I meta crazy /mean person who made strawberries filled with a cream cheese frosting and drizzled with balsamic vinegarette...people were mad.

Strawberries with balsamico is actually a pretty common combination

not with frosting though

Yeah, that was the consensus. With the frosting, it was easy to assume that they had chocolate sauce drizzled over them. That would be delicious.

But the balsamic on it? Na, that was criminal recipe right there.

That sounds amazingly delicious though

I was at a train station in Japan and there was this adorable little stand selling tiny fish shaped pastries. They smelled like chocolate, when you cracked them open they looked chocolate filled but when you bit into them, ugh, sweet bean paste. Now, it's not a bad treat but it goes right with your thoughts in expectation vs reality. I was disappointed at first but didn't take long to become fond of them.

Brilliant, I love it

Strawberries with balsamic vinegar is both a delicious and fairly common combination.

We got a sundaes once at a baseball game. We all got chocolate syrup and it tasted super sour. Same thing...turned out to be balsamic

I don't have a law degree, but I think that's a crime punishable by stoning.

What's weird is how they had been serving for at least an hour and I was the first person to mention it. Edit: I do have a law degree. It is just a heavy fine.

"This one tastes like the cow got into an onion patch"

I did the same thing to my sister, except I mixed the orange juice and milk together.

There's a Caribbean drink called "morir soñando" (die dreaming) that is simply orange juice, milk, and sugar over ice. Absolutely delicious.

I do that all the time, except on purpose. It's delicious!

It is? I had no idea. I thought all the curdling would taste awful and I kinda ran away from my sister so I didn't really see her reaction. Ima try it!

Edit: You lied to me.

You have to find a good ratio, and it is much better if you blend or whip the milk a bit. Whole milk is best.

I prefer a small amount of OJ to milk. Maybe 1:5 ratio.

Sounds almost like an orange creamsicle!

Either way I'd throw up

I don't know about that. I really like orange ice cream so it shouldn't be too bad...

Add a little sugar and some vanilla extract and try it again...

Ok brb.

Edit: I fell for it again!

My husband's family is Dominican, and they make a drink like that called Morir Soñando. A little sugar, sometimes a little vanilla if they get fancy, and it's like a liquid orange creamsicle. So yummy.

I think it's people getting offended that unattractive people are cosplaying as their favorite hot character. Noone gives a shit when a sexychick dresses up in a corset and claims their a stormtrooper or boba fett. But you can expect a bitch fest if a overweight chick dresses as elsa.

Personally Sexy Boba Fett would annoy me just as much as Fat Elsa. Maybe more so.

It's what really annoys me about Nigri's cosplays. Sexy Veigar with cleavage? Really?

How's that worldview working out for you?

I've heard of this prank. I've always wondered how they didn't smell the difference.

Perhaps they had to drink through a straw.

I believe I could smell the orange juice from the table, but maybe that's just me.

Perhaps it's time to experiment!

When they taste the OJ, they're expecting milk, and they react as if it were spoiled: spitting it out and gagging.

As someone who knows the taste of orange juice - is it so similar to spoiled milk's taste?

Yes, that's actually how orange juice is made.

I don't see it as that insensitive. The best displays are by people who look similar to their character they are dressing as. If it were a skinny person dressed as Ursula, it wouldn't work. It is kind of sad when you realize she doesn't have many other options of characters to go as though.

I dunno. Why's it matter if she woulda picked a skinny girl to cosplay as? Noone seems to mind when chicks cosplay as a sexy stormtrooper in a corset.

Maybe most people don't mind, but I certainly get a bit annoyed. Mainly because the "sexy half dressed version of [x]" is so overdone. I mean, I can appreciate the effort and the beauty of the person, but there's no effort in the idea - it's just so obvious.

Noone seems to mind when chicks cosplay as a sexy stormtrooper in a corset.

Depends. Is she fat?

That's what the corset is for. I know because I use corsets to hold my fat in when I'm wearing something that calls for that kind of thing.

The best cosplays are when the body matches, yes, but I also think you can do a "variant" where you're a bit more overweight/skinny but it still works. Obviously you can't be 400lbs and do Jessica Rabbit, but this lady could definitely pull it off

Likewise you don't need to be roided to do a Wolverine, but you've got to at least look like you could sprint 100m in less than 20s!

That lady would look great as Jessica rabbit! Especially with a corset for the cartoonishly small waist, I think she could pull it off!

Part of the fun of cosplay is tackling the challenge of bringing something to life. A lot of character design is impractical, complicated, and expensive if you hired tailors to make pieces traditionally, so dreaming up and implementing work arounds is a huge part of the appeal.

... Finding a character to cosplay is a similar challenge. It's easier for some than others, but in the end it's something all cosplayers deal with. It may seem like she doesn't have many other options of characters, but I'm sure with ingenuity and tact she's got plenty. Don't feel sorry for her, celebrate how fantastically she owned this Ursula! And trust that she can make more great cosplays.

As a cosplayer, I do sometimes agree. Since I'm a rather unshapely lady, I don't like cosplaying skinny characters. But I also don't have the boobs to pull off Ursula. I'm planning on a female Penguin from Batman, since its a large character, but I usually cosplay males, so this will be a bit of a change for me, gender bending.

However, cosplaying is 100% for fun. If a huge man wants to cosplay as Sailor Moon? Fucked if I care, as long as you don't let anyone shame you. Dress however you want, and don't let the world judge you.

My first thought was "actually she's a little thin."

True, but she still fits her character because she has softer edges. A Cruella DeVille cosplay would not fit her body type as well because Cruella is all sharp edges.

Like Tomb Raider dagger tits.

And not an octopus

It really shouldn't matter.

For example I'm going to sort of quote someone I listened to on a podcast about a year ago. It was kind of like this:

"Someone cosplays Lara Croft. It doesn't matter if they're tall, short, fat, thin. Whether their skin is pale or dark, even whether they're male or female. When they put on that outfit they feel like Lara croft. They are awesome. They feel fantastic because for now they can become Lara Croft. And nobody has the right to tell someone they didn't do a good enough job, that they were only allowed to cosplay person X Y or Z because their body type wasn't right for anything else."

If this person was a tall black man with one arm it doesn't matter. People shouldn't have to base their hobby around their body type. So yes, you are being insensitive. If someone only wants to create accurate cosplays then fine, but don't encourage a culture of shaming anyone who decides to do something different.

edited to add the endquote. whoops.

"I know reddit might not like this, but I'm glad to see a fat person know their place!" So brave.

yeah how dare anyone play without first relegating their imagination to the realities of body image.

That said, there needs to be a wider range of body types in fiction. Most are impractically skinny, need more Korras ,Ellies and Brienne of tarth

I'm pretty sure she stuffed that bodice to appear bigger. Someone posted a link to her blog and she looks a lot thinner in her other cosplays, including a She-Hulk cosplay, which consists of a skin-tight one-piece.

That said, she shouldn't have stuffed her bodice for this one as Ursula is much slimmer in her Disney Villains incarnation, which this cosplay is based on.

Corsets are amazing at changing a body's natural shape. Also it may have been more comfortable over a 16 hours period to do it that way.

She's just playing to her strengths.

Actually, I agree. This is a gorgeous cosplay, and she pulls it off so well because of her shape.

Damn. Kudos to her!

I like it when she calls the Little Mermaid a Tramp.

Though she was voiced by Pat Carroll who I also thought looked a lot like her at the time.

Man dressed in woman's clothes with exaggerated makeup

In fairness, the two others that responded to you are correct. A Drag Queen is a man in exaggerated woman's clothing. But it's a bit more than that.

A Drag Queen is a gay man who wears dresses and sometimes highly exaggerated makeup to entertain others as a caricature of female stereotypes. For the best example I can think of (an a bit of Robin Williams) see "The Birdcage".

Me too! I really hated how they slimmed her and the Queen of Hearts down so much. The cosplayer looks better than the doll.
