It's pretty common knowlege in Houston that Gaslamp and Reddoor turn anyone away that isn't pretty and white until 1am. The last hour they let the homeless in.

If you're in midtown i suggest Sage County...its a dumb pop-country themed bar with luke brian dubstep remix blasting but its fun and they arent racist.

Film it, night after night. Then sue.

Just to add, Gaslamp is known for this

Don't think that will work. Everyone knows about this anyway. Same with red door

No need for that. Just use whitesquad.com

Take this to the news. It's he only way you'll get some sort of response

I am not sure if you're new to Houston, but if you are, it's pretty common knowledge that certain places in town are racist. Parts of midtown and Washington can be that way. The trendier and whiter the place, the more likely it'll be so. Not all of Houston is that way, but if you're unlucky to run into those which are then sometimes it's best to simply leave rather than confront. I know that if you can prove it, now you can go report those establishments to the city. Whether or not it'll do something, I'm not sure but if it's important enough to you to copy and paste it on here then maybe it'll be important enough for you to also file a report.

And yes, at least for midtown typically it's black and Asian people that are discriminated against the most. I'm a minority myself and typically I don't go to those places unless I'm dressed appropriately and have never had issues going in or ever paid, but having friends that've been turned away at the door, I usually end up going to less hostile establishments in midtown like third floor, Celtic, pub fiction, front porch dogwood and little Woodrow's.

It does seem to be a part of Houston that I don't think has really been spoken about too-too much, since if you can get in to those places, you go, and if you can't, then you don't. No one really makes a big fight or protests to be let in so the behavior is not being punished.

But I can say that it probably won't last for long, most of the places like that are racist for only so long before they're no longer the cool place to be, then business goes down so they have to let others in. Places that used to be that way and cut it out for the most part because of decrease in popularity include Proof, Hughes Hangar, Kung Fu, Pub Fiction and many places in Washington that by now have even shut down.

If you do want to be let in without any issues I always recommend most of downtown, montrose and heights. If you still want a lively environment then prob downtown.

PS: Stay away from Cle, it's hands down the most racist place in houston.

Lol... gentrify an area then make sure the minorities can't get back out. Classic.

Could you elaborate please? I know someone (white) that goes there every now and then, and have been invited to go along. So, there wouldn't even be a chance of a non-white person getting in?

Oh I've been there, only reason I got in was because I was with a white blonde girl in a tight dress. Other than that it's a mass of blacks, Indians, Hispanics, and Asians standing outside begging to get in. I also got my tab switched with someone else's so I paid 40-something bucks for two shots. Inside its mainly people wanting to be seen by others, we had fun dancing but I can Promise you that you can have that same fun elsewhere for half the price and half the snobbiness, not worth it.

I was going to ask, if I were with an attractive white guy, would I be able to get in. But then I thought about it, and would not want to step foot in any establishment that requires a white partner upon entry.

Thanks for the heads up. Seriously, thanks. You've probably saved me a headache.

As with everything else, your mileage may vary depending on the person. I'm a minority but also not exactly dark skinned and over 6ft tall. If it weren't for that I'd prob get screwed over way more often. So just because you're a minority it doesn't mean that you won't get in. Nonetheless there are other places you can go dance.

I love chill spots like front porch or third floor but every now and then I do get an itch to go dancing. And while you can go to Cle to go dance, there are better spots. At the end of the day it comes down to your attitude, I once danced in the middle of the bar at Dogwood with my friend who was really wanting to two-step and we both had quite a few shots in our system so we were he only two people dancing to boot scoot boogie, while everyone watched and it was a blast! So yeah, give your money to another place.

Well, that's bloody awful.

When I read the antiduluvian shit that is happening as described by the OP it kind of makes me glad I am a boring nerd who enjoys to stay home and play video games with a bunch of nerds.

[–]DistanceSkaterWashington Avenue 5

Laughed so hard when you said Cle...I've never been there but i know a few girls that promote that club and it just exudes racism and classicism all over their facebook. I'm an attractive white guy but I think the minimum requirements for cle is a bmw 3 series so im definitely not getting in.

Sometimes, I wish I was obscenely rich so I could drive over in a super nice, rare care and spit on somebody's BMW and drive off ripping up $100 bills. I'm a strange person.

Kind of, preferably a Range Rover!! Then you won't have to pay the cover haha

Gas Lamp isn't the only Midtown bar that does it, I've seen it first hand at other places. Funny story from there, though. A few weeks ago I tried going to Gas Lamp with some friends, in total there were 5 of us, 3 guys and 2 girls. We got to the front and there was a $10 cover per person, and we said we'll just go somewhere else, cause we didn't plan on staying long. The bouncer, as if cutting us a deal, said that he'll let the girls in for free if the guys paid $20 instead... Yeah, because we're more likely to go to your bar if you RAISE the total price on us.

That math doesn't even add up...you'd end up paying $60 total instead of $50

Exactly. I guess he was hoping we'd be drunk enough to rip us off. We laughed and left after he made us that "offer".

Or he was just making a douchey joke that you didn't get.

That place is filled with dealers and trash. Be thankful they don't deem you the type of person that should be in there.

Seriously. All that shit is plastic.

This same thing happened with me and my friends.

I'm mixed 25 (look hispanic) and my friend 24 is hispanic. We were with a group of friends - mostly white, they went first in line because we stayed back to talk to some girls.

The doorman wouldn't let us in and cited dress code. Thing is: I was wearing a Southern Marsh button up, jeans, and boots. He was wearing a Polo button down, khakis, and some new Cole Haans

They let our friends (white) in right before us wearing V-necks, Jeans, Boots, Sperry, polos, Tshirts, etc

Point I'm trying to make is we were more appropriately dressed and less intoxicated.

Still makes me mad thinking about it.

Me, my sister, my cousins, her friends are all white My husband & his bro are Hispanic.

My sister made us go to Gaslamp for her birthday when they first opened, we all got in didnt pay, no issues. Then about an hour later my brother in law tried to get in and they first tried to charge him and when he paid they then said something about his shoes so they didn't let him in. My brother in law was pretty much wearing the same thing my husband was wearing and my husband got in (with us). After they didn't let my BIL in I was so pissed so I took our party elsewhere. (Little Woodrows lol) I know this type of thing is common but it seriously grinds my gears.

I HATE when I'm out with my in-laws and waiters, bouncers, etc treat them different than they would if it was me & my parents.

P.s. Mexican restaurants are the WORST for this! Like wtf a mexican can't eat tex mex? GTFOH I should record me & my parents eating at LOS CUCOS and then record me & my in-laws eating there to really let people compare for themselves UGH

..end rant..

Lots of Mexicans dont like Mexican Americans. Just like Africans and blacks here

Now I'm curious... how is it different when you are out with your in-laws?

I'm mexican (not mexican american/chicano) and I don't know what this means. I'm still having trouble deciphering exactly what you mean as I've never seen this happening.

[–]TheMexican_skynet 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

Same here bro. I have never felt discriminated against since I moved to the states. The only weird situation that I have been put in is when a waiter clearly knows I speak Spanish, and I clearly know he speaks Spanish too. He speaks in Spanish to his workmates and I do too with my girlfriend. Still, we speak to each other in English. Jajaja

I speak Spanish and I look like I do as well, but when I go to a restaurant where all the staff speaks Spanish (and little to no English) with my white-looking boyfriend, they refuse to speak to me in Spanish. Like I'm some kind of traitor and can't be let back in to the club with our special language. 😒

What restaurants do you go to? Everytime I'm at a restaurant and I get a Mexican I get spoken to in Spanish and I'm whitexican. Never had any issue with service either.

Too many to list. They're pretty much always straight up Mexican or Latin places, though (not tex-mex), There are a few places where the waiter/waitress will still speak to me in Spanish, but the majority won't try even when I start off by speaking in Spanish. It still bothers me sometimes, but I can't force them to speak to me in Spanish.

[–]In_the_Shadows88 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I hate red door. I've seen white ppl literally go in with blue jeans and sandles.

Damn, reading these comments makes me realize how racist a lot of Houstonians are. Bars pulling this shit are obviously in the wrong, how is anybody defending this shit?

Look at the google reviews.

Fuck that place it a douche bag bar.....why would you want to go to a shitty douchbag bar

my thoughts exactly!

I'm kinda brown and my girlfriend is asian. I live in freaking midtown. They pulled the same shit on us, and we walked away. I had no idea it was only towards minorities. What a bunch of assholes, I'm glad I didn't give them any money.

Sometimes it's also just one of the door guys. I once went there with a girl after a date (she was white and tall) and the guy charged us 10 a pop to go in. I literally laughed in his face and said I wasn't giving him anything. So we walked around to the other entrance to Gaslamp and the guy checked our ID's and let us right in. We bought one drink and then I told her for us to leave and I made sure to go through the first entrance. As I exited I looked at the douche and told him thanks for his service. He was pissed when he saw we had gotten in.

Personally I have experienced this many times at midtown. I automatically get treated like some thug because I'm a 6'2 Hispanic dude and they will find anything wrong with my attire every time but you see white people go in and out without even a care in the world about the door situation. Its really bullshit because I feel it's just a bunch of white dudes not wanting competition inside the bar because I'm sure most girls get in regardless their race. Just need to be attractive. Very sketchy places in midtown but its not always a shit show just really pisses me off I get treated like that in my own city.

[–]secret_agent_man007 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

The only way I've been able to avoid paying cover is to go in with a group of white people. Doesn't fix the problem, I know, but you won't have to pay.

So, in a way, by encouraging minorities to hang out with white people to avoid cover charges, they are encouraging race relations?

Obviously that's a joke and this is a disgusting practice, but I guess you could use it as an opportunity to make new friends with a random group of people that can help get you in.

If you even want to go into that racist shithole, that is.

This is nothing new and why i've said before that most of midtown and parts of washington are catered towards white Newstonians and yuppies

After seeing the pictures and with no proof of this happening I can already tell they don't meet the "young, rich, and attractive" requirements of midtown. Although that's not so important if you at least dress the part, and those faded work jeans and ill-fitted clothing certainly don't fit the area. I've been told there was a cover at Gaslamp where the women with us could get in for free. We went somewhere else with our business, their loss.

Honestly, I don't often see people this old in that area unless they're wearing a $5000 suit. I'm not saying the establishment can't be prejudice, but if I tried to get into Gaslamp being their age and dressing like they are, I'd expect to pay money to get in. They want to keep their young and attractive demographic going, if that's what draws someone to that bat and they are neither young or attractive, they should expect to have to make up for it in some way, it's not as if they outright denied them entrance, or put the cover at some astronomical price.

Not big on going out to bars, lounges, and such but I've heard the rumors about Gaslamp and a few other places (specifically in Midtown) that won't let you in allegedly because of you're ethnicity. Happened to 2 friends of mine and a family member, both times they were told that they weren't dressed properly and had to pay when they were dressed like everyone else.

I'm a white guy who has been told I have to pay or get bottle service while others with more/hotter women in the group got in for free.

It's very common. I suggest vigilante justice. Just throw bricks into their windows every Wednesday.

Fight fire with fire.

It happens everywhere and it happens often.

I'm Hispanic and darkish. Definitely not light at least and have gone to every car in midtown as far as I know. Including gaslamp.

I've never been discriminated against or charged.

I've been discriminated against in midtown.

Prefer to drink in Katy instead. Even if I have to deal with all the smoke.

What I don't understand is why so many people are suggesting to "move on" and "go somewhere where you are wanted"... Since when is this kind of discrimination acceptable? F You to the clubs who do this and F You to those who support it with their tacit acceptance. I say we shut these places down. Last I checked it was 2015, not 1950. Oh and btw, I am white.
