I want to touch on the issue of self improvement through a tough experience today.Today, i was able to save the life of another human being that was choking.
Lets begin,
This morning I was at work with my co-workers. It was a night shift. Anyway, one thing is that ever since i swallowed that pill, i have focused a bit more on self improvement and situation awareness for myself. i constantly observe, rationalize then act accordingly.
Now at our place of work, we are all mandated to take CPR and First Aid courses by default. Thing is, people just view this as a minor inconvenience and stepping stone to the job. Some people actually pay for paper versions of these courses. I paid attention and asked questions.
Incident. We were kinda winding down the job and some drinking coffee. Now there is this one guy that was eating a sandwich dry with no liquids. Now we were all there. The guy I will call Tim, started drooling and tears rolling down his eyes. He was not saying anything and some co workers there started laughing at him and his drooling. I looked in his eyes and realized that ..shit, this guy is choking.
Now if you take lifesaving classes you will quickly learn that a drowning person does not drown like in the movies where they say"help, help! am drowning..!! A person will drown right next to you and you will not realize it unless you know what to look for. They struggle but it is mostly underwater as they cannot keep their body above water. So the surface will have minimal splashing. That is why people drown in a pool full of people and you do not know it.
I refer to this because it was the same thing. I quickly took charge and directed to my coworker "Call 911.. Tim is choking..!!" As i went behind Tim and started performing Heimlich; a procedure we all are supposed to be trained in, i noticed, everyone there just stared. No one was moving. I yelled at the top of my voice..."Call 911.." to my coworker, he did not move.
Heimlich not working, Tim has lost consciousness and goes limp. I put him on the ground. Check for breathing.. gone!! No breathing, his eyes roll back into his head.
I ran to the phone, called 911, shaking, scared.. but decisive. Informed them my address, that someone was choking and i needed to go back and perform CPR. I swear no one had done anything. Tim's mouth was frothing with foam and mucus. He was unconscious. I started CPR. I will be honest, everything was like a blur. I counted compression's aloud and gave 2 rescue breaths among-st that mucus and froth. I could not believe there were 4 other people in the room doing absolutely nothing.
As i continued, CPR, one guy actually had the nerve to tell me.. You are doing it too hard you will hurt him. I mean am sorry for trying to save his life so that he can live to be hurt.
The unexpected then happened. As i made compressions the piece of bread stuck in his throat came out and he gagged and coughed. i put my finger in his mouth and removed it. A fucking lump of bread.
Tim started breathing on his own and i put him in recovery position. Paramedics got there and took over taking him to hospital. They asked me to come with them to walk and talk. One of them told that it is rare to see someone take charge and it does not happen as often as you might think because of the Bystander Effect.
Beta me would probably have stood there with the other guys freaking about what to do. It came second nature to me. I had made it a point to change my life and did not wait for someone else to take the lead.
Tim is fine now.
Lesson's learnt
  • TRP is not a jutsu that will turn you into Chad that bang the chics. It is a way of life that stresses on self improvement. Yes, you will turn into Chad that bangs the chics but that is and should never be the focal point of TRP.
  • learn some basic to intermediate life skills and mentally prepare yourself to use them, I know that in Germany CPR and First Aid are mandatory for all drivers. learn how to camp, swim, lift, basic medical skills, CPR,First Aid, Burns, Electric shock and wound care, learn a language, a skill set, how to make a fire, disaster preparedness, What to do in case of medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetic emergencies, What to do in case of a snake bite, emergency food and supplies awareness..etc And teach them to your kids. You never know when in life you might need these skills, how handy they will become and how they could mean the difference between life and death.
Step outside of your former comfort zones and learn something new.

I can't believe these idiots stood around and did nothing after you told them to call 911 twice. Morons.
[–]babybopp[S] 13 points14 points15 points  (3 children)
it was the weirdest thing ever. they stood there rooted to the ground afraid to take any action. Those guys always act tough.
[–]Mortimax 11 points12 points13 points  (0 children)
Like you said.m. bystander effect. The trick is to designate one persone to do it otherwise no one will take the initiative.
"Brad, call 911 to send help here and come back to tell me when they will get here."
[–]ChiefBigLeaf 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
I saw a LPT once that said something along the lines of in an emergency don't just yell out "Somebody call 911", it is much more effective to just pick someone, anyone, look them straight in the eye and say "You, call 911".
Bystander effect is real, if you don't choose someone and just yell out the generic someone call for help everyone will expect someone else to do it.

it's not like you were asking them to do something complicated either. i know shock is a thing but that's pathetic and no excuse once someone like yourself clearly takes control of the situation and delegates a simple task
you must feel like a beast. good for you man

In my country, you have the obligation to help when someone's life is in danger. However, even if you are supposed to know, e.g. CPR, it is defensible that you didn't act, because you were scared, didn't know how to do it in the shock of the moment etc. What is not defensible is not calling (the equivalent of) 911. That's just the law and it's not very redpill to argue solely based on the law. However, it goes to show that even if you have no clue how to do something in particular, there is always something you can do to get it done. It's really pathetic to basically let someone die because you couldn't call 911.

They might be morons, but this reaction is common to all people - they had never been in that situation, hadn't trained for it, didn't anticipate it, and the shock paralyzed them. No doubt they would've tried to help if they had time to reflect and think about it.
This is why the military drills the same tasks over and over and over, until they become automatic reflexes - in a panic situation you have to act first and think later.
Kudos to OP, great job.
[–]Derbi50 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Its actually super common. Everyone assumes someone else will do it.
[–]Redsqa 12 points13 points14 points  (4 children)
Part of me wants to tell you to go ape shit on those morons. Part of me wants to tell you not to, as it may harm your relationship with them.
But still, what a bunch of incompetent fucks. It's one thing they just froze, it's another to berate you when you're the only one trying to save a life. Good CPR can break ribs. Often, actually. Effective CPR is not some pussy-ass bouncing like you can see in the movies. You go to town on that sternum. Like you're trying to push your ex wife's head under water after she's just told you she would be suing again for more alimony.
It's better to get a few broken bones than being dead.

Please start some Red Pill comedy gigs. Roflmao.
[–]babybopp[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
yes.. i was watching some videos on rescue and one of the things that guy said was that good CPR most of the time breaks someone's sternum. i have taken a physical class and a bunch of people do not realize, that chest needs to go down to enable blood circulation.
[–]Special Olympianmakethemsayayy 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Yep had to save an OD-ing girl....that shot up H, but yeah like broke her sternum.
[–]TheMGhandi 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Does this really shock you? That's shocking!
[–]Redpillwhiterabbit 8 points9 points10 points  (2 children)
They always told me in my cpr training to a specific name and tell a specific person to call 911. As you mentioned, the bystander effect bypasses logic and the brain tells them that "someone else is calling, I gotta see this".
Also, they are now saying that breaths into the persons mouth are not needed as the elasticity of the chest cavity will draw enough to do what needs to be done: keep the brain alive until a defibrillator can arrive. Something like 19% of people who pass out actually wake up on their own.
Many people crack ribs while performing CPR.
Personally, I'd rather break every rib in my chest and live to recover than go out because of a piece of fucking food.
Good work.
[–]Cell-i-Zenit 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
you dont need to do the breaths because in your blood is enough "air" for 10 minutes.
[–]razorwan 4 points5 points6 points  (1 child)
OP just letting you know that people standing around has less to do with them being betas or something, and more to do with human panic in a stressful situation. Add on the potentially litigious situation and people not helping becomes more foreseeable. Profoundly wrong, but foreseeable.
[–]babybopp[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
actually my point was not based on that. Most people's reaction nowadays sadly is to whip out a phone and record the situation. In my case, the guys people would normally think would take charge of the situation failed miserably and the one guy no one thought stood up. Now when you go unconscious, implied consent law /good samaritan law comes into play. It is regarded as you give your consent and the good samaritan is protected from litigation by law.
Notice i used myself as Beta me a year ago would have stood as a deer in the headlights. I did not specifically call anyone a beta. But in my case, TRP has helped me gain a more profound awareness and self confidence and improvement that i never had before.

This just increased your reputation in the workplace 400%. Fucking insane, nice job. Use this experience to your advantage, when people talk to you about it, act like it wasnt a big deal. Like it just happened naturally for you. Don't even say "oh yeah i only knew how to save his life because of the cpr course i took".
Again, nice job man
[–]Lt_Muffintoes 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
What fucking morons. I would be tempted to fire/demote them if I was manager.
It would be interesting to remind them of what happened and see how they try and wriggle out of it
[–]tittytainment 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
I once watched someone fall over on an escalator in a busy railway station. I was by no means the closest and while a couple of people ran up the still moving stairs to help her, several others milled about looking confused. No-one else had the wherewithal, so I stepped smartly up to the emergency stop and pushed it. Seeing that there were enough knights in shining armor, I continued on my way. I still wonder at the failure of several people to do the obvious. Shrug.
[–]Screenp2 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Nice job brother!
I've been in a similar situation with a severe woodworking accident and it's amazing how shock makes people freeze.. they just stand there wide eyed as a guy is losing blood by the second.
As I'm wrapping the injury with the shirt off my back, yelling at my assistants to get the med kit and call 911 they just stood there. I'm covered in blood and these guys had no fucking clue what to do. What felt like minutes passed before the call was made and by the time the ambulance showed up my guy was going into and out of consciousness from blood loss.
I'll never forget that day as had I not leaped into action, he would have died on the floor.
I had my CPR cert back in the boy scouts and it's something you never forget.
eidt Don't forget to carry a CPR shield in your wallet, glove box, first aid kit or whatnot as you being the first responder, must take care to protect yourself first before helping. In my case, I had to do a battery of tests after to ensure I didn't contract anything from blood exposure.
[–]MentORPHEUS 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
From childhood, I've always been the one person in groups to take action in emergencies while everyone else just stood there and stared impotently. Good for you, Sir.
Whats really a shame is, time spent running yourself to call 911 was time needed to work on clearing his airway. I'm hoping he didn't suffer any brain damage due to the inaction of your frozen colleagues.
Really good advice you gave, to study up on various emergency skills.
[–]WhiteKnightFgt 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Thank god, good on you man. I hope you punched your co-worker squarely in the nose.
[–]GrandmasterHurricane 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Make sure you get these fuckers fired for incompetence. Because if something more serious happens you're fucked.
[–]Zagiggity 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Have had to perform CPR twice, neither patient made it but the classes are very serious and are nothing to make light of. The first time I felt a rib pop it finally sunk in the gravity of the situation and CPR itself. Congratulations on doing what you were taught and leading a potentially deadly recovery.
[–]herknav 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Same here (once). Tragic/traumatic, but there's still a bit of solemn pride in having been the one to act. Will try to never let my cert expire, and recommend the course to anyone who has the opportunity.
IIRC, Good Samaritan laws can vary dramatically from state to state. Encourage everyone to take a moment and check theirs!
[–]Special Olympianmakethemsayayy 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
They had the fucking balls to tell you not to do it too hard AFTER THEY DID NOTHING? I'm not even surprised. What a bunch of fucking women freezing up in danger. Pussies.
[–]fit_to_fight -2 points-1 points0 points  (1 child)
Props, brother!! I'll have a beer or three in your honour tonight.
[–]babybopp[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
