I find this ironic. Even more people came out for the fireworks when Britain handed over power to China, what, 20 years ago?

I think it is because they had an initial promise and agreement of how HK will be governed to allow for a smoother transition.

Then it didn't work out because this time China has gone and change the agreement- just because they can.

So ya, it didn't go the way the people hoped. The people hoped that China has enough honor to keep a written agreement. Now that hope is ruined, along with the trust which is now lost.

Sad, but most likely true. It's like the protests from 2012 in hong kong after which, sadly, not many things changed. Or the june 4th incident in bejing that really didn't end well...

[–]Prettychilledoutguy 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Ya. With all that experience , I imagine China is pretty used to these situations .

I am a supporter of the protest, but I think China's best move would be to just ignore the protest altogether and let it slowly die down. It's only been a few days and there is plenty of local backlash against the protests . Eventually the protest will lose the sympathy of the HK public and it will die a quiet, drawn out death :(

I wish for the success of the protest, but even more I wish for nobody to get hurt in violence.

I don't understand how that's ironic. People came out because there was a massive ceremony/spectacle. I was born in HK and I was there on that day. I was there to witness the event and the ceremony, not celebrate it. My family had already decided we would move after the handover. People were very anxious about it, and had been for nearly 10 years. After Tiananmen Square, there was a huge amount of emigration out of the country that lasted for years. Nobody was naive enough to think that the CCP was going to bring them freedom and a better quality of life.

Here in Hong Kong people are actually willing to stay in the streets consistently day in and day out.

People in the US have it very good. Why would they waste more than 1 day protesting? They've got shit to do. People in Hong Jong are actually disenfranchised and have a real drive to keep this up.

It's only acceptable for mainland kids to piss and shit in streets, or anything that happens to be near a street. Hong Kong was a special, autonomous zone in China because it was handed over from the UK back in 1999-2000. Unsurprisingly, China is now planning to integrate HK more closely and is scaling back/significantly changing the way their democracy functions. So basically a protest for democracy.

China wants to vet any candidates seeking to become President of HK, presumably so they can reject them if they seem "Western-leaning" or any nonsense like that. So China isn't technically "stripping" HK's democracy, but they're fucking with it.

HK'ers want to keep their open elections without China interfering.

Well, one could argue that selecting between a group of people who are all ultimately going to be stooges for Beijing is essentially a choice between one candidate and thus not democracy.

[–]ds20an 13ポイント14ポイント  (14子コメント)

Absolutely, and there is nothing the rest of the world will do about it. But whether its a good or bad idea to quell this by force is another question. It's a question I can't figure out, and many Chinese officials can't either.

What's stopping the Chinese government from just ignoring them indefinitely, and simply let local law enforcement handle it?

[–]ds20an 4ポイント5ポイント  (8子コメント)

ごめんなさい。これは既にアーカイブしてあり、もう投票はできません。

Nothing stopping them from doing that either. But they also could use force. They're going to have to look at the pros and cons of both actions, and make a decision.

FWIW, I don't think letting this go on indefinitely is a good option for Beijing.

[–]twistedLucidity 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

ごめんなさい。これは既にアーカイブしてあり、もう投票はできません。

I'm thinking they might wait for a bit, see if the numbers go down as people tire and their will ebbs.

If that doesn't happen...how many people do you have to kill to bring the rest into line? A few hundred maybe? Yes, I think the Chinese government is quite capable of a bit of mass execution.

Realistically...how can the West respond? China makes everything and has a large chunk of the world's wealth.

[–]ds20an 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

ごめんなさい。これは既にアーカイブしてあり、もう投票はできません。

I agree they'll wait and see, but that could change quickly if there are other democratic protests in the mainland. Beijing is nothing if not paranoid.

Do they execute on the street? I think unlikely. They definitely don't want martyrs. They're very aware that they're more like an occupational force than a legitimate government in HK.

And yes, the West won't respond to any force by China. They could commit mass genocide against the Tibetans and we'd probably do little more than economic sanctions.

But don't overplay China's hand. The fact that they're the world's factory counts for very little. Consumer goods drive economics in peacetime, but count for nothing in war. (Except as potential arms factories for the Chinese). Also, a lot of the Chinese wealth is overseas. If the world froze offshore assets, China's economy could collapse. There is a lot of hiding of money from the government. Especially by government officials. And if the West canceled its debt with China? Don't forget, by owning other nation's debts, China has a vested interest in making sure they succeed. It's a love-hate relationship.

Vet in what sense? Like decide who is on the presidential ballot? That's decided by primary votes ala the people's vote. For who gets on the primary ballot? That's primarily decided by each state's individual ballot requirement, which varies wildly based on the state's population, primary set-up, primary date, traditional requirements, etc.

They wouldn't be "keeping" open elections. There are no open elections for Chief Executive right now. A lot of the graffiti you see around has the number "689" on it because the chief executive is selected by a board of business interests and important figures. Leung only received 689 votes to be Chief Executive, hence "689"

Neither of these is quite correct.

When the UK handed China, Hong Kong, China agreed to give the HKer's universal suffrage and the right to pick their own leader.

HK people as of now do NOT get to vote for their leaders. All their votes combined only make up a minority of votes, with the majority going to a special council of hand-picked representatives by Beijing who make all the decisions.

However for the 2017 elections, China promised to give Universal Suffrage... except they failed on it because China is only allowing the Hong Kong people to vote for one of three hand-picked puppets for the role of Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong was never a democracy previously, they are governed under the basic law which provides them with the freest society on the planet. However, the terms of the 1997 handover granted Hong Kongers suffrage in 2017. Basically they are governed under the same type of common-law system as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Beijing is allowing Hong Kongers to vote on candidates deemed acceptable to the CCP in Beijing, but Hong Kongers want to choose their own candidates. This is why they are protesting.

Hong Kong has a form of democracy. In the upcoming elections, China has decided which candidates may be on the ballots. Any candidate supporting democracy is not allowed to be on the ballot. So all candidates are China approved. They are protesting for the right to vote on whoever they want, not just the limited list of candidates approved by China.

Here's a good thought experiment:

imagine that Watergate happened now. Same set up- Nixon, CREEP, Pentagon Papers, all of it, but now with Fox, CNN, David Brooks, and the rest. Think of how the media would deal with that and what would have been done, said and not said.

The question today isn't who just controls the government, the question is who also controls the media.

[–]imusuallycorrect 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's hard, because the media loves to circlejerk itself. I think they only attack the whistleblowers out of jealousy because they are rogues. The media has been trained how to deal with Government sources over several decades, and they play ball with them more now because they want to be invited back to those press conferences. That's how the Government controls the media, by only inviting journalists who have a history of asking the questions they want.

Nothing to do, nothing to lose. The average fresh graduate makes less than 24k USD a year, while their rent is almost comparable to New York City levels. These are some pissed-off students.

But yeah, that's a very rich density for some.... Unfortunately efficient disaster to occur.

This pisses me off. Not for the reasons you may think. Im pissed off at us americans. We sit here watching people protest for their rights and fight for them. While everyday are privacy is stolen from us by our own government for what? Or how about the corruption thats spread throughout it while we sat and watched as corporations forced their way into politics to get what they want at the cost of our economical and human rights. We used to be called a stand up type of people. Always stansing up for what was right and tryimg to fix the wrong. But now were just a nation of sit down people just watching our rights getting ripped out of our hands.

HK democracy literally being overtaken by China vs same old shit that's been happening in the US

[–]auandi 16ポイント17ポイント  (5子コメント)

ごめんなさい。これは既にアーカイブしてあり、もう投票はできません。

You realize they aren't comparable right? The US is by no means perfect, but we still have elections, elections where anyone can run and anyone can win. That's rather fundamental, and is not in any way being threatened. If anyone even tried something close to what China is trying you would see even larger protests in the streets.

Not to mention, we do protest! A lot. Just last week we had 400,000 protesters at the UN demanding action on climate change. Down at the US capitol there's a protest just about every week. Then there are political rallies and town halls all over the country, which can be in the tens of thousands. We just had protests in Ferguson and dozens of cities in response to it. There have been protests about our actions in Syria. There have been protests about of immigration reform both for and against. We have a lot of protests.

Just because you don't participate in these protests, doesn't mean they aren't happening. Cynicism is an easy crutch but if you look more objectively you'd see the US isn't in such bad shape and that we aren't nearly as lazy as you seem to think.

The US has 2 political parties that pre-approve candidates. Our "choice" is an illusion.

[–]auandi 7ポイント8ポイント  (3子コメント)

Pre-approve by the voters. Voters can oust them at any time, just ask Eric Cantor. He was the second highest ranked Republican in government and he lost his primary to someone with less than 1/50th the money and no government ties or experience. Who gets put up as the Republican or Democrat isn't left to some shadowy cabal or smoke-filled room, it's left to whoever happens to show up to primaries.

I'm not going to speculate why he lost, but he lost to the Tea Party. That entire party itself is fishy and has some type of shadowy cabal behind it.

There is a main island that's called Hong Kong Island and then areas around it that are still considered part of 'Hong Kong' as a whole. So no, it's not mainland China.
