Of course Birmingham has its rough parts, it's a fucking city. The area around Legion Field is historically a rough part of Birmingham but to generalize that to the whole of the inner city is ignorant and close minded.

This comment would be correct 25-30 years ago, but things have gotten pretty up and up lately

I love ignorant people that continue to try to put Birmingham down. I have lived around Birmingham my entire life and it has never been safer or nicer. I was downtown quite frequently and never came close to having a problem.

on the way out of legion field last night a cop was trying to wrestle this dude down at gunpoint. rough stuff around there

Well The area around Legion field isn't great

Same problem with Memphis. Most of the people who talk shit about it have never even lived there.

Atlanta too. It's safe so long as you're smart and don't go doing stupid things. (Ignore the robbery at gunpoint one block away from my on campus apartment last night)

It's safe so long as you're smart and don't go doing stupid things.

That's a lot of "if"s considering that there are many other places where you don't need to be doing those things to be safe.

[–]Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets / Wake Forest Demon DeaconsGT2018 2

Oh definitely. You just see a lot of people from the suburbs talking about how they're afraid to go to the city for stuff. No, you won't be mugged when you go in a big group of people in broad daylight to well populated touristy areas. You just have to avoid like walking alone late at night down a dark side street. Even then you're probably fine.

    [–]Marshall Thundering HerdTaurik 1

It's pretty much like that in every big city in the US.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and the way people from the 'burbs talked, it's like they fully expected to get raped and murdered the moment they stepped into city limits. It was even more ridiculous when I lived in Philly.

    [–]Arkansas RazorbacksDomX 6

There's a reason why most of us don't want to live in Memphrica.

    [–]Tennessee VolunteersInmanDO 5

Grew up in Memphis. Went to college in Knoxville. Never want to go back to Memphis.

    [–]Auburn Tigers / UAB Blazersinviscidfluid 3

Pretty much everyone who lived in Memphis and no longer does says they will never move back. I have only visited a few times but from what I could tell it sucks. There are a couple nice little suburbs but those are pretty limited.

Pretty much everyone who lived in Memphis and no longer does says they will never move back

To be fair that's kinda selection bias. You're not hearing from all the people who love Memphis and don't move out.

    [–]Auburn Tigers / UAB Blazersinviscidfluid 1

yeah, at the same time some people will say "I used to live in X city. I loved it there. I wish I could move back." Former inhabitants of Memphis usually say something along the lines of, " I hate that place and i will never move back." I grew up in TN and moved back to Nashville after college. The general consensus here is that Memphis is the worst city in Tn by far.

[–]Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets / Wake Forest Demon DeaconsGT2018 1

Yeah you're right, I was just being a dick. I've never been to Memphis (I've driven within sight of it on the interstate but that doesn't count) but it looked pretty terrible on The Blind Side. So I would agree that it sucks.

[–]Ohio State Buckeyes / Hartford Hawksguttata 2

I have to move out of Memphis and then back every 4-6 months for work. Coming back each time, I die a little more...

    No one blames you.

    [–]Tennessee VolunteersWillie_Waylon_and_Me 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Same exact situation here, parents ended up moving right next to Fayette County after Bartlett went to shit. Knoxville has its rougher parts, but its funny when the natives try to show me their ghettos. You'll get shot just for being white in wrong parts of North Memphis at night.

[–]Ohio State Buckeyes / Hartford Hawksguttata 0

Yeah, and they can't talk shit nearly as well as those of us who have seen it firsthand

    Hey, fuck you buddy.

Seriously. I live downtown and work in East Lake and love every bit of it.

Um, well I live in bham and it doesn't sound like you described it

Seriously though. This guy obviously hasn't stepped anywhere between I-65 and Red Mountain Expressway in the last 5 years.

Born and raised in Birmingham and lived in the heart of Southside for over a year and only had one problem. You clearly haven't been here recently. Birmingham is in the middle of a renaissance. Also, Florence area has a lot of interesting history and local flavor.

Drove through the south this summer. Birmingham was by far my favorite part of Alabama that I got to see.

    [–]UAB Blazers / LSU Tigersndjs22 4

If you don't know where you're going or what you're doing I can see that. Birmingham took me a few months to figure out, but it's a great place that is only getting better. It does, of course, have it's rough areas, like any other city.

[–]Ohio State Buckeyes / Northern Illinois HuskiesProfaneTank 5

I should clarify. Birmingham was my favorite part of populated Alabama. But I swear, I never wanted to stop looking at those beautiful hills. Especially with a nice fog hanging over them. That said, I still wish I had been able to explore more of Birmingham. I'm sure I'll be back eventually though.

    [–]UAB Blazers / LSU Tigersndjs22 3

I gotcha. I might have misunderstood your post initially myself. I'm glad you were able to come through, and I hope overall you enjoyed your experience. Alabama has a lot to offer if you know where to look, Birmingham especially.

    [–]Marshall Thundering HerdTaurik 1

Birmingham and Huntington need to be sister cities. I could have written pretty much exactly the same thing about living here. It's poor and has its problems but it's not the Thunderdome that people seem to have in their minds.

    [–]Auburn TigersButchMFJones 2

    Birmingham is pretty dope tbh

Around Regions Field, Good People, Avondale, etc. It's basically a New Birmingham. Completely different feel. UAB area is in pretty good shape too.

You just gotta give it a shot and look past your preconceived notions of what Birmingham is.

[–]Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets / Alabama Crimson Tidetrey_chaffin 1

I worked at Regions Field the first summer they moved back from Hoover. Can confirm. Pretty awesome.

A lot of Florence is just as bad. So many home invasions near UNA's campus.
