My best friend is a huge UT fan (and me too now, given the phenomenal treatment I've gotten from the fan base. Y'all even painted the rock for us!) and we are both in Nashville right now, so we've been incredibly stoked for this game since its announcement. I dragged him to the UAB @ LSU game a couple of years ago and another UAB game last year, so even though our team got canned I was going to go to this game, mostly because I said I would and I'm a man of my word but also because I wanted to wear some UAB gear to show support for us at a game we should have been playing in. The UT fan base has been great to me every time I've interacted with them. Much love.

Of course Birmingham has its rough parts, it's a fucking city. The area around Legion Field is historically a rough part of Birmingham but to generalize that to the whole of the inner city is ignorant and close minded.

Oh definitely. You just see a lot of people from the suburbs talking about how they're afraid to go to the city for stuff. No, you won't be mugged when you go in a big group of people in broad daylight to well populated touristy areas. You just have to avoid like walking alone late at night down a dark side street. yeah, at the same time some people will say "I used to live in X city. I loved it there. I wish I could move back." Former inhabitants of Memphis usually say something along the lines of, " I hate that place and i will never move back." I grew up in TN and moved back to Nashville after college. The general consensus here is that Memphis is the worst city in Tn by far.

Same exact situation here, parents ended up moving right next to Fayette County after Bartlett went to shit. Knoxville has its rougher parts, but its funny when the natives try to show me their ghettos. You'll get shot just for being white in wrong parts of North Memphis at night.

Born and raised in Birmingham and lived in the heart of Southside for over a year and only had one problem. You clearly haven't been here recently. Birmingham is in the middle of a renaissance. Also, Florence area has a lot of interesting history and local flavor.

I should clarify. Birmingham was my favorite part of populated Alabama. But I swear, I never wanted to stop looking at those beautiful hills. Especially with a nice fog hanging over them. That said, I still wish I had been able to explore more of Birmingham. I'm sure I'll be back eventually though.

I gotcha. I might have misunderstood your post initially myself. I'm glad you were able to come through, and I hope overall you enjoyed your experience. Alabama has a lot to offer if you know where to look, Birmingham especially.
Birmingham and Huntington need to be sister cities. I could have written pretty much exactly the same thing about living here. It's poor and has its problems but it's not the Thunderdome that people seem to have in their minds.

Your right I have not. My best friend played linebacker at UAB from 2009-2010. I went to about six of his games. When I was in college in Montgomery from 2010-2013 I went to club Aqua in Birmingham some but not much.

Around Regions Field, Good People, Avondale, etc. It's basically a New Birmingham. Completely different feel. UAB area is in pretty good shape too.
You just gotta give it a shot and look past your preconceived notions of what Birmingham is.
