Greetings /r/BadHistory!

Hmm, been a while since I was one of the first people to post in these things...

Amway, just in case you weren't in the know, three days ago someone made this post (now removed, but you can see their edited post here), AND THE DRAMA IS STILL ONGOING! IT JJST WON'T STOP! Also, it's been x-posted to /r/BadMythos, /r/iamverysmart and /r/SubredditDrama

In other news, I rest comfortably knowing that I'm not the only one in my neuroscience clss who kows close to nothing about 80% of the things in that class. I m just waiting until we get to axon/synapse development, something I'm ACTUALLY familiar with. Hox genes are kind of interesting though. Doing a presentation on the relationship between Hox genes in retinoic acid in a few weeks, powerpoint coming along nicely, have to say.

In other news, today, I'm going to go talk to some people about getting the ball rolling on an idea for an app/website I have.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 4

I still just want to lock it. No drama if no one gets to post.

But imagine the popcorn and butter that will generate from that thread. It will be a new financial source for all those poor postgrad!

I've just been approving anything that pops up int he modqueue. If people want to keep arguing in a thread that was removed two days ago... let 'em!

[–]ZZYZX-0End the Württemburgish Oppression of Baden 4

Try to keep your arguments more succinct please. Stronger arguments are usually shorter anyway.

Oh good lord. This is pure gold.

"My feeble brain can't handle your verbosity!"

I just saw that like 10 minutes ago! There are so many super interesting questions to be asked about the limits of historical knowledge, none of which he was asking. Instead, he was just being that guy who walks into the middle of a 200 year old conversation and acts like he has all the answers. :(

I do wish sometime that badhistory would have Maoist self-criticism sessions sometimes, but yeeeesh.

So what he's trying to argue about again? I don't really understand any of his point from his ramblings.

[–]chocolatepotChanel was the woooorst

History is WEAK. Therefore calling people wrong about historical facts is STUPID. Science is BEST.

So another of those STEM master race that didn't even understand scientific method and even tried to use the same method to prove morality (lol)?

[–]chocolatepotChanel was the woooorst

Basically, yes. "History is an epistemology, but it fails at being an epistemology" was a common refrain.

History is WEAK.

I educated in history, you not say history is weak. How about I take your STEM and smash it!?

[–]ZZYZX-0End the Württemburgish Oppression of Baden 1

Man, I remember when I used to have to pay good money to have people smash my STEM...

Hi Turnshroud!

HELLO MY ALDERMAN FRIEND!

How has your day been so far? You feeling well? Any new loves? Passions? Dog pictures?

Nothing new, really. I have the day off and woke up early the local classical station playing the goddamn overture to La gazza ladra (again—they seem to love horns and cymbals in the morning). Spending the morning reconfiguring my home network, because I resolved that the old setup wasn't satisfactory for entirely irrational reasons.

New Dragon Age DLC is good. Made me angry, but was good.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

I've been thinking of getting it. What made you angry about it?

[–]eongeAlexander Hamilton was a communist.

The, uh, ending. Not at the DLC, but at someone in it.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

Ah. Is it worse than the ending to the game?

[–]nihil_novi_sub_soleW. T. Sherman burned the Library of Alexandria[🍰] 2ポイント3ポイント  (4子コメント)

Wait, is the ending bad? I'm in the process of finally playing it, and heard nothing about this. Is it on the level of Mass Effect 3's awful endings?

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

No, nothing like that. I sometimes get the impression I'm the only one who didn't like it. But to be honest, I thought it was worse than ME3, partly because of how rushed it seemed and the stupid dance party.

[–]nihil_novi_sub_soleW. T. Sherman burned the Library of Alexandria[🍰] 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

and the stupid dance party.

I guess I'm just going to have to experience that myself. I wish Bioware would go ahead and split itself down the middle, with one team making RPGs and another making fanfiction in which lot of exaggerated sci-fi and fantasy characters go clubbing, rather than trying to squeeze both into everything they've made since ME2.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

To be fair, I really, really loved the "you have an apartment" DLC for ME3. It was gloriously campy.

[–]eongeAlexander Hamilton was a communist.

I am not going to argue about the merits or demerits of the main game's ending. The ending is its ending, and reveals a lot about the lore of the game. I think it worth it, if you're a fan of the game's lore.

[–]nihil_novi_sub_soleW. T. Sherman burned the Library of Alexandria[🍰] 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Is it worth buying at full price? I don't even know if Origin has sales, but I'm not thrilled about spending upwards of $20 to get back into a game I already bought months ago, and not having gameplay-affecting DLC will make me anxious.

[–]eongeAlexander Hamilton was a communist.

If you're a fan of Dragon Age lore, it is worth it. If you want to see a real ending to the story of the Inquisition, it is worth it. If you want a hint at the next game's location, it is worth it.

If you only have a passing interest, I'd wait for a sale.

[–]chocolatepotChanel was the woooorst

My book is on Amazon for preorder! How cool is that! The author link also takes people to a Regency short story I wrote for a competition several years ago which is much less cool but you'll note I haven't taken it down!

In addition to the exhibition I'm putting up in one of our galleries, I'm also preparing a talk to give on the thing for the beginning of October, figuring out how our museum can have some e-labeling for the period rooms (when our WiFi doesn't stretch that far and there's very poor cellphone reception in our building) and then writing the labels, and prepping for the possibility of creating a line of historical patterns based on some of our clothing collection. That last one is kind of tricky - I'd like to do it because I think we have some cool pieces, but the historical pattern market sees a lot of people sticking to the Big Three commercial companies (Buttericck, McCall, and Simplicity) or the very well-known indie ones like Truly Victorian or PastPatterns - so I'm kind of glad it has to be back-burnered for a month or two. But yeah, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

I guess I should plug one of my new favorite subs /r/baehistory which I enjoy posting in cause it forces me to learn about people.

Also, has anybody been playing Metal Gear Solid V? I've heard great things and might pick it up.

Saw the playthrough from many sources so far, and yeah, it is quite enjoyable, and that's coming from someone who is not a big fan of open world sandbox games. But the narrative is a bit hit or miss, with the signature Kojima tropes and styles that can break suspension of disbelief for some people.

Plan on finishing The Wire today. We'll need a new show to watch. Anyone seen Narcos? Any good?

I've had a couple friends recommend Narcos as good, the one episode I saw I enjoyed

I think Bojack Horseman is really good, but many people disagree with me

And that's all I've really been watching lately

Bojack Horseman takes a bit to get into, I think. I keep meaning to give it a shot past the first episode, because I've seen glimpses of later episodes and they're pretty funny.

Yes. If you're willing to bear with it through the first three or so episodes, it not only gets much more consistently funny, it also turns into a really well written character drama rather than the honestly pretty mediocre Family Guy style raunchy sitcom it seems to be at the start.

If you can make it 3-4 episodes in, it really starts to hit its stride

I saw a little bit of Narcos. Just wish I could turn off the English subs that are burned in. So distracting.

[–]nihil_novi_sub_soleW. T. Sherman burned the Library of Alexandria[🍰] 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

so, i recently went to RAF Montrose, the first military aerodrome in the uk. I took some photos. also, missed my first lecture of the year. :( OTOH i opened my water bottle of seltzer and it sprayed 4ft/1.3m in the air and hit the ceiling. That's not really on the other hand. i guess it's just one of those days. I've also signed up for two tutorial slots without knowing when my third module has it's lectures. so, that's fun. and my fish and chips were mediocre. blech. i need a better alarm.

If your chips are mediocre, it's not chips' fault as a principle. It's that chippy. You need a better chippy, one that has the nice ketchup. Have you had a tattie scone yet? You have to have a tattie scone.

[–]whatismooElders of Zion 2, Jewgalectric JewgaJew: Part I, The Jewening

no. it seems knishy. and yeah, the other chippy is better

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

I bought Call of Cthulhu and other Weird Stories and I'm really excited about it. It's like finding a genre/author I didn't know I was looking for. The only downside is that I fear that I won't be able to fully appreciate it since I have a bit of trouble concentrating :/

I went to Big Bend for Labor Day weekend. That was nice, especially since my husband had never seen the Milky Way before. I also met this beast on the trail. Texas is kind of scary.

But on the other hand, it was a weird weekend. Last week, for instance, I had three interviews with a company and was told that I was an "exceptional candidate," but on Tuesday, they sent me an e-mail and told me I didn't get the job. I got pulled over for speeding, was told my car needs a new engine, got hit by a car in the parking lot and lost my front grille, finally had my GPS die, and my sister was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.

I'm still trying to decide if it was a good weekend. I'm not sure.

Had an 18-hour day yesterday. Up at 6:30, gym, class, and then Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was in town so I went down to help at the rally. So an hour of checking people in at the top of my lungs, a ten-minute speech from Justin, and then off to the bar with the other volunteers. Today I slept in until 7:30, but I'll be at work until 11:15 tonight. Then up at 6:00 or so tomorrow to get to my 8:00 class. September is shaping up to be absolutely nuts.

More from the Canadian election:

The Greens have announced their platform, which is sweeping, ambitious, and pretty much meaningless because they're never going to win more than three seats on the outside. But at least they're trying, I guess.

I keep losing my post because I forget to save my draft whenever I open up Chrome to grab links. Fucking Alien Blue. Trudeau and Mulcair announced policy planks of affordable housing and auto industry protection in the TPP talks respectively, while the Conservatives have floundered into third place in the polls.

Unfortunately nothing hilarious like Mr. Citizen's Arrest or Mr. Pee in the Coffee Mug has happened recently.

Absorbing the lessons our artifacts teach us shapes our worldview. They are our teachers. Seeing their beauty every day elevates and inspires us, as it did their original owners.

This is why more people don't follow their dreams: They know the world is a cruel place for anyone who doesn't fit into the dominant culture. Most people fear the bullies so much that they knuckle under simply to be left alone. In the process, they crush their own dreams.

I'm done working weekends, which is great, because now I can actually travel to visit people without taking time off, and I can finally go to church regularly for the first time in about 6 years.

If there isn't a name for the compulsion to repeatedly start over in RPGs in order to have an ideal playthrough, I am absolutely okay with somebody naming it after me. I have played several dozen hours of Dragon Age: Origins in the last couple weeks, spread over a half-dozen characters with pretty minor differences between them. This is why my Steam backlog is a monument to waste and shattered dreams of free time that I will never use.

This week in Guns, Germs and Steel a classmate unironically claimed that since the Inka didn't have carts they were uncivilized.
