1) Is this sub fucking with us or are they serious

2) Now I'm super hungry, this is what I get for skipping breakfast and then checking reddit at work.

Honestly, I think it's a little of both. Feigning seriousness about an irrelevant topic can be fun.

But then there are always people who take the feigned seriousness to heart.

But then there are always people who take the feigned seriousness to heart.

And thus the parody subs become serious over time. And then we get those "Wait,.... what? Are you taking this seriously?" moments.

ShitRedditSays, or at least it's primordial form, can trace it's abiogenesis to a thread on the Something Awful forum which was feigning mock indignation about, back then, mocking furries. Specifically, the ones that think they have the spirit of a ten thousand year old dragon or werewolf or something -- therians and "otherkin". Most of those sorts were on Tumblr then as well. When Twilight was all the rage, you were awash in vampires as well. There's a direct lineage from that to the modern SJW tropes. I'm not comparing a guy who thinks they're a wolf to a guy who thinks they're a girl. I'm saying that a lot of the people who, acting as trolls, mockingly supported -- in the most vitriolic and radical tones of combative advocacy possible -- the "rights" of otherkin/therians (I remember one instance of a girl complaining on her LiveJournal that the band of her phone headset she had to wear at her receptionist job hurt her ears. Not her real ones, her spirit cat ears. People piled on to her defense -- for the lulz, mind you -- and harassed her employer) are the ones who graduated on to using the same tactics to "support" -- again, disingenuously, for "the lulz" and troll humor -- the trans demographics. A lot of the strife was actually manufactured to provide an antagonist for their manufactured protagonist narrative. The newbies to the "movement" didn't know that both the most extreme grievances and strife were contrived, as was that the support against the scarecrow antagonists performance. The joke took on a life of its own and escaped the laboratory. SRS... Is a Potemkin village, with well meaning but unknowing denizens.

1) Is this sub fucking with us or are they serious

A grilled cheese consists of only these following items. Cheese. Bread with spread (usually butter). This entire subreddit consist of "melts". Almost every "grilled cheese" sandwich i see on here has other items added to it. The fact that this subreddit is called "grilledcheese" is nothing short of utter blasphemy. Let me start out by saying I have nothing against melts, I just hate their association with sandwiches that are not grilled cheeses. Adding cheese to your tuna sandwich? It's called a Tuna melt. Totally different. Want to add bacon and some pretentious bread crumbs with spinach? I don't know what the hell you'd call that but it's not a grilled cheese. I would be more than willing to wager I've eaten more grilled cheeses in my 21 years than any of you had in your entire lives. I have one almost everyday and sometimes more than just one sandwich. Want to personalize your grilled cheese? Use a mix of different cheeses or use sourdough or french bread. But if you want to add some pulled pork and take a picture of it, make your own subreddit entitled "melts" because that is not a fucking grilled cheese. I'm not a religious man nor am I anything close to a culinary expert. But as a bland white mid-western male I am honestly the most passionate person when it comes to grilled cheese and mac & cheese. All of you foodies stay the hell away from our grilled cheeses and stop associating your sandwich melts with them. Yet again, it is utter blasphemy and it rocks me to the core of my pale being. Shit, I stopped lurking after 3 years and made this account for the sole purpose of posting this. I've seen post after post of peoples "grilled cheeses" all over reddit and it's been driving me insane. The moment i saw this subreddit this morning I finally snapped. Hell, I may even start my own subreddit just because I know this one exists now.

You god damn heretics. Respect the grilled cheese and stop changing it into whatever you like and love it for it what it is. Or make your damn melt sandwich and call it for what it is. A melt.

Here's the thing. You said a "melt is a grilled cheese" Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies grilled cheese, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls melts grilled cheese. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "melt family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of meltae, which includes things from tuna melts to pulled pork melts to chicken melts. So your reasoning for calling a melt a grilled is because random people "call the extra ingredients grilled cheese?" Let's get steak and bacon melts in there, then, too. Also, calling something tomato soup or ketchup? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A melt is a melt and a member of the grilled cheese family. But that's not what you said. You said a melt is a grilled cheese, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the grilled cheese family melts, which means you'd call Philly Cheese steak, beef dip, and other sandwiches grilled cheese, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

You know, this copypasta actually makes me think the "melt" dude was right. If you start adding all these other ingredients to it and still call it a grilled cheese, then you could end up saying that a philly cheese steak or a cheeseburger are types of grilled cheese, which would be silly.

I think the general consensus was that the cheese had to be the star of the show. That would exclude nearly every cheeseburger and cheesesteak, while keeping the bacon or tomato grilled cheeses we all know and love.

That's my opinion too. Something like a grilled ham and cheese or a tomato basil & mozzarella sandwich would be grilled cheeses, and something like grilled cheese and tuna would be a tuna melt.

Yeah bro the melt guy was always right. The majority of sandwiches are toasted and include cheese as a component. What makes a grilled cheese what it is, is the fact that toasted bread and cheese is all it is.

I mean yeah it isn't foie gras but you can do some pretty rad stuff with a grilled cheese. I like buttering both sides, putting cheese on top and baking it, makes the cheese outside sorta crunchy and the rest like any other grilled cheese. I add ham too but please don't let /r/grilledcheese know though because adding anything inside of the sandwich that isn't cheese is a bold and risky move that does not usually pay off there.

[–]bethlookneryou say that like it's a bad thing

I like using mozzarella and pesto on whole grain seeded bread. I also really like Havarti, basil, tomato and a little bit of honey on ciabatta.

Also, sharp cheddar (the kind you get at Whole Foods) with bacon and slices of gala apple.

Goddamn, I love cheese.

Gooooooood, those sound insanely good. Sharp cheddar is my favorite to use, but havarti and munster are really good too. I basically made a Reuben the other day with no meat, so like a grilled cheese with swiss and sauerkraut and dipped it in Thousand Island, also freaking good. You just gotta watch that the sauerkraut doesn't soggy up the bread or get hot. Corned beef or pastrami would have been better but hey it was still delish

Ketchup hate extends well beyond Reddit. For example, ask somebody in Chicago for ketchup on your hot dog. Or a Belgian for ketchup on your fries...

Quite frankly I don't really get it. Yes, Heinz and the like is a putrid sugar paste. But you can certainly make ketchup that tastes a hell of a lot better than Heinz. And there are shitty mustards and shitty mayos and shitty versions of every other condiment out there too though, so I don't know why ketchup gets singled out. Probably because it's so popular in the US...

Ketchup is way too sweet, to me it's like putting candy on my dinner. I will, however, use it sparingly sometimes. I'll mix 1 part ketchup with 3 parts mayo for a great french fry dip.

Sir Kensingtons makes a spicy ketchup that is a tasty revelation. They put cayenne, lime and coriander in it if I'm not mistaken.

Their regular ketchup is great too. The first couple times I tried it I actually thought it wasn't sweet enough, despite having great tomato flavor, but my tastebuds adjusted over a few uses and now I think Heinz tastes like artificial tomato candy.

I love ketchup, especially on food with melted cheese. I put it on eggs, grilled cheese, and mac & cheese.

I pit ketchup on everything. I love to cook and I can make fancy shit and I like going out to fancy farm-to-table restaurants where they serve grilled octopus and local pickled vegetables and all that stuff, but I dip my sandwiches and my breakfast burritos and my sausages in ketchup at home all the time. And yes, it has to be on scrambled eggs or I can't eat them.

We are ketchup soul mates.

Sometimes I put ketchup on sharp hard cheeses.

[–]MacEnvy#butts 11

I always use tomato soup for grilled cheese dipping. I guess ketchup would be similar.

Is the linked thread an accurate depiction of how seriously people take their grilled cheese? Just wondering.

yeah, it can be. There was a big asshole copypasta about how nothing but cheese, bread, and butter should be used. Some people took it to heart.

So, since you're the resident expert now;

If I put fresh mozzarella and basil on bread, brush it with olive oil, and cook it in a pan, and serve with roasted tomatoes, garlic, and chicken stock, pureed into a soup and cucumber salad with fresh dill, is that meal still grilled cheese and tomato soup?

My mother in law and I differ on this question.

I called it grilled cheese and tomato soup. She thinks if it's "fancier" than Kraft singles and a can of Campbell's that I should call it by a fancier name. It's not high end gourmet food to me, though. That's just how my family always ate. We had a backyard garden and a small farm in the family. Baking bread, making cheese, and using fresh herbs and produce is how I always rolled.

[–]Aycoth 5

Find the French name for grilled cheese, start calling your grilled cheeses that. Problem solved.

I was looking through the top all time posts on the sub, and stumbled upon this lovely thread.

[–]krabbbyHere's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

More importantly, how the hell did we not get this 3 months ago?

Alright, people! Time to clear this up.

First, I really enjoy how u/jsmooth7 opened old wounds, dug up my old post, and posted this particular thread up. It was nothing I've ever experienced before. Props to you, OP!

Second, I had acquired a crazy amount of free assorted cheese, and made a couple of grilled cheese, and thought the sub would enjoy it. Most did, save for a select few who proceeded to berate me. One gentleman in particular, (the one who is quoted a couple of times in this post) was especially offended, and was completely unreasonable when trying to talk to him. It got to me.

Yes, apparently some in r/grilledcheese take it waaay to seriously. Some of them act like dictators, it's truly a sight. Most of them are good people, just wanting to share some tasty photos of grilled cheese.

Yes, I used a ketchup/Frank's mixture to dip my grilled cheese in. I am a dipper. Pizza and creamy garlic, toast and coffee, I love to dip. I don't particularly like spicy though, but do like the taste Frank's adds, so I dipped sparingly. But I did dip.

Yes, I am aware of soup. As usual when I have grilled cheese, I like to have soup with it more than anything else. I would have rathered tomato basil with my grilled cheese that day, but I didn't have any and wasn't about to go out to get some. So, screw that shit.

No, I do not like ketchup/catsup on my steak. I prefer my steaks cooked medium rare, with blue cheese crumbles atop. Also, what the hell is catsup anyways? I've never seen it before, nor do I know what it is. Ketchup...catsup...

So, if anyone has any other questions, or concerns on my eating preferences, let me know. I'm happy to clear it up.

I've never heard of dipping toast in coffee. Donuts in coffee? Yes. Toast in egg yolk? Yes. But toast in coffee? It's okay to just admit you're wrong you know? /s

the reason coffee makes it better is because the coffee is hotter than the toast so if your toast cools down at all, a dip can bring the butter back to melting temp. i just don't see any value from the eggs. they're really a condiment. i feel like toast can benefit from interesting ingredients (and some of the toasts on this sub are interesting), but just a plain condiment like that... for me, yuck. it just turns into a toad-in-the-hole without the hole.

It's gotta be quick dips, my friend. Or else that toast will fall to the bottom of the cup.

I don't think anyone here is looking to berate you; you were generally the calmer one, and you kept the drama flowing pretty well.

People here just want to observe the fights, especially over trivial things like ketchup on grilled cheese. That guy went crazy about it!

Generally, yes. He got to me by the end of it.

Turns out, he was a decent fellow once he relaxed about the ketchup. We're totes besties, now! /s

People need to find different things to worry about

Hear me now, cheese eaters of the world, I will cheesify your ears with my tale. Since I was a lad I've eaten many many cheeses and enjoyed them all in their own way. One day, I saw a small boy attempt to soil his pristine sandwich with the Devil's cum known as ketchup. I saved him from going down that dark red, salty path by roundhouse kicking him in the face before dog touched his lips.

TLDR; Ketchup = Devil's cum

Mayo is commonly used to make a grilled cheese, I think there's an exception clause for it.
