Great idea, but they have lost me at that word which I despise so much! By the way, the word that I hate is albeism.

Give me one good reason to hate that word.

Well for one, it creates an Us vs. Them narrative. It's like saying, "You can't say/do/feel this because we can't/don't want you to."

Also, this might be me, but saying "abled" or "disabled" isn't really accurate. I think it's much better when people say, "I'm paraplegic," or "I'm blind," instead of "I'm disabled." Saying you're disabled is just selling yourself short. I've worked with people who are "disabled" and they're really anything but. Some of them are way smarter than me and contribute more to society than I do, so what does that make me? Yeah, some things are harder for them than most people, but isn't that true for every individual?

Either way, there's definitely some good instances where using the word would make sense. For example, if my town built a public library with twenty steps spaced two feet higher than the previous one leading to the only entrance of the building, then yeah, that's ableist. Everyone paid for that building, so why should people in my town be physically restricted from using it? It's a clear bias toward people able to make that climb.

But the only time I hear people use the word "ableist" is like when someone else uses the word "stupid" or "walk." Even if the word has good uses, I hate the word because it's so widely used by shitheads like this who are just looking to get pissed off about something. It can literally apply to anything, which is why it is so widely abused.

You typed your comment on a keyboard, something that people with no hands are unable to do? Ableist.

You used non-dyslexic font to type your comment? Ableist.

Your flair doesn't have legs, and therefore must be trivializing the struggles of amputees? Ableist.

Your flair is yellow, something people who are colorblind cannot see? Ableist.

Your username has numbers in it, which is difficult for people with dyscalculia to read? Ableist.

It can be used and abused by anyone looking to play victim, which is why I hate that word. When I see it in a sentence, the only thing that crosses my mind is to be extra vigilant because the person talking might be full of shit.

That word was never used in my community at all. Tumblr just make it popular among themselves.
