Do you ever read something so unexpected and so shocking you have to put the book down?

This happened to me last week. There was a character on a mission to assassinate a very important and very fat local leader. The man stabs the leader with a sword so far that he loses the blade in the fat. Then, feces from the stabbed man's intestine flows out!

Anyways, the Bible is weird.

The Bible is a weird source for two reasons, I think: for one, it is just about the only "non-Western" work people in the west read widely. While the bible has certainly been an important work in western literature, it is mainly as a reference point and as a guiding ethos rather than as a literary exemplar. And so when people who are raised on Bible stories actually read the bible they find it a bit odd.

And secondly, it is one of the very few ancient sources we have from people outside of the core cultural and political center. The knowledge that the Jews exist on the fringes of much more powerful empires really runs through a lot of biblical work--think of the near constant angst regarding the Assyrians.

Ah, my man Ehud! Always loved that story, it's just so... I dunno, unexpectedly visceral. The book of Judges in general has some amazing stories, people tend to think that the only stories in the Bible are cute little morality fables and don't realize just how much blood and sex there is.

Deborah, Barak, and Jael is the next couple chapters, right? That one's my favorite, Deborah and Jael are amazing.

Yeah, Im a product of Catholic school, so I never had to bother with Bible (harharhar). But now I'm reading the stories through a Gospels lense, which the stories of Judges are difficult to fit into. Like I get that slaughtering your enemies can be seen as the power of God for the faithful, but damn.

I was reading a book a few years back where our hero is feasting at the home of a local lord. Our hero thanks the lord by pinning him to a wall and vomiting all over the lord's face.

Anyways, viking sagas are weird.

I am not nearly as stressed as I should be. Which is bad because it means I'm not being productive, and I should be.

This year family members that I actually know and life started dropping like flies, as my two grandads and my favourite great aunt all died recently. Grandad died yesterday, funeral is a couple of days hence, awkwardly on a day of lectures, before a tutorial and after an essay I haven't started is due. Last time I didn't get an extension for a dead granddad I ended up whiffing an important paper which wrecked my mark for the paper, so I should get onto that. Then another essay next week and more than enough revision to keep me busy for law as well.

One of those weeks, I think.

Would it be Badhistory to say that the creation of Labor Day in the United States was partially a response to the more radical May Day (AKA International Workers Day?)

Also, happy Labor Day. Kinda sucks the buses aren't running, but the workers deserve it.

I was inspired by the discussion of medieval stasis in fantasy to make this--a version of The Chart for Middle Earth. I'm pretty happy with it. I think more fantasy universes could use their own version.

Things I was not responsible for last night: Convincing a drunk guy to use makeshift scaling ladders to climb on top of the warehouse next to the bar.

Things I was responsible for last night: Starting the "USA" chant when he got to the top.

Anyways, I'm going to celebrate the achievements of the American working class with animal protein and alcohol.

The Cleveland Air Show has been going on and I feel the pilots are intentionally planning flybys as I do my homework.

In other news, I tried out for my schools speech and debate team the other day! Call backs are today, wish me luck!

I'm thinking I might read Beevor's big WWII book. How easy of a read is it?

We went out to the Gillespie County Airport on Saturday. The Commemorative Air Force had a few planes there. As luck would have it, we got there just as they were firing up the engines on the B-17 so we got to watch that and see it take off. There was also a wonderfully shiny P-51 and a very nice B-25. Also an SNJ which also took off while we were there. Finally the B-17 landed and we went home.
