If a coach is passing notes / making comments to his student during a tournament, that player would be disqualified. Why would a simul event be any different?

i.e. in a simul, he's agreed to play 30 different games, not one game against 30 people at the same time, not 29 games against 29 people and 1 game against 2 people, etc. etc...

This has nothing to do with Kasparov not being able to lose an everything to do with the organizers lying to him so someone could get a win. Whether or not excluding 2000+ players is right, it's just not acceptable to misrepresent your skill in a simul. Of course he's not going to spend the same amount of time on a 1200 board and a 2200 board. I doubt he would have lost if he knew the player was 2200, he would have spent more time at that board.

I think you're absolutely right. I was going to comment some dumb shit until I read your comment. Spot on. It's a completely different mindset playing against 1200 players vs. 2200 players. Completely.

Yeah, fair enough, I'm sure he's used to pulling all sorts of unsound tricks on lower rated players to get through these things. Sort of a low blow to sneak an expert into the mix without him being aware before hand.

From what I can tell in the comments there, Kasparov's score was 26 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss. The 2200 player won and helped the guy sitting next to him pull off a draw. That's probably what Kasparov was talking about when he mentioned cheating.

Dude just wanted his 15 minutes of fame, so he could boast about how he beat Kasparov. Then went the extra mile by helping someone else to draw his game. What an asshole.

It is quite clear on the Kasparov.com site about Simuls:

http://www.kasparov.com/simul/

"Events have a maximum of 20 “players” and as many people as the sponsor/organizer wishes attending dinner. Some sponsors just serve cocktails and hors’ d’oeuvres during play. The format of the evening is up to the sponsor. Players must be true amateurs who have 1999 ELO points or less, no exceptions. No player who has ever held a Rating of 2000 or over is permitted–it is contrary to the spirit of the simul and to the agreement. No coaching or computer assistance is permitted. If the sponsor/organizer requires serious players who want a serious match, this is a different sort of evening with four to five hours scheduled and is a very different event."

Garry likes distilled bottled water at room temperature and one or two chocolates on a table in the middle of the playing area.

Hey cool, he's playing Adam Spencer in the photo at the top.

Love him. Chess would be less interesting without him, no doubt about that.

I don't get why a 2200 player would play a simul in the first place. He's professional (probably), so what would he get out of it? Except saying you played Kasparov, of course. But again, if you don't tell him your ELO, is not really fair anyway, right?

Sometimes it's not about playing to prove your skill but just playing for the opportunity

professional at 2200?! I know a couple of GMs who aren't professional and they are 2500+

God if that didn't make that players day right there. This video is pure motivation.

I feel Kasparov's reaction is justified. Higher ranked games require more attention and sneaking into a lower ranked, casual atmosphere is kind of shady. As other's have quoted from his website, he has clearly defined rules to avoid this situation and they were ignored.

Completely jealous of his intensity. Also think he had ~100 ways to handle the situation better and get the same resolution.

I love how the disputed games are just "disappeared" at the end, Soviet-style. So posterity, if it gives a flying f***, will note that he never lost.

Perhaps next they can erase the losses against Topalov and Deep Blue.

When you're playing 30 games at once and trying to keep the event under a few hours...
